    Cool video. I remember being thought the knot less Snell technique from my uncles as a child when they'd go night fishing for Giant Travales( Ulua) here in Hawaii. I'm starting to do more beach fishing with live baits so I'll be using a Snell knot and circle hooks more often. I'll be using the more conventional Snell knot, but it was cool to see it again in this video.

      I use the knotless snell knot in Hawaii. Done right, there is virtually no friction to the line when you finish the knot which is the whole purpose of using this knot. Keep the wraps tight from the beginning.

    already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). czcams.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

    The knotless knot & the uni both have 1 disadvantage. They both have the line outside the wraps of the shank which for toothy fish risks cutting the line that is exposed b4 it passes through eye & continues toward mainline. A true has the line protected by the wraps & is very simple. All you need to do is twist it as you wrap around the shank, get your 7 or so wraps completed then pull slack up through the eye. Its a far superior knot and requires little more skill research true snell & you will be sold on it.

    You answered my question is why not use a Trilene knot for the trailing hook. Could just use a straight shank hook as a trailer & tie it as a Trilene. Really like the Uni Snell; wish you would have shown that as a double Uni Snell. Thank you much!😊😊😊

    I use the first one the knotless knot for all my catfishing, it's easy and fast and actually stronger then other snell knots cause it is a knotless knot and instead the line binds onto itself making it stronger because there are no pinch points.

  • @arlie57

    I worry that these ways to tie can create angular binding points in the knot causing it to weaken itself. I have learned to tie a non-binding snell with a "whip finish" style snell from fly tying. I use this in the Pacific NW for salmon and steelhead with nary a break at the hook. The result is almost exactly as a nail knot without the nail. And, by snugging down the knot just before the hook bend you can then create a "bait loop" with the bare standing end from knot to eye. By increasing the amount of leader coming off the base of the knot, I have taught myself to tie double hook rigs as well with the whip finish. Here is a link to another person showing this on CZcams. czcams.com/video/V9tjpjMiCGE/video.html FISH ON everyone!!

      If you tie it correctly it will hold. I do 11 wraps on 50lb and down. Above that, no snell. Also, a very tiny dab of super glue on the last wrap doesn't hurt.

  • @Spirit612
    @Spirit612 Před rokem

    Your Uni-knot snell is incorrect even by your diagram - the tag line doesn't get wrapped around the loop and the shank then brought through the loop at the bottom; it gets wrapped around the shank inside the the loop then back out of the loop.

      @@stillwater62 interesting I wouldn't think it would be a popular way to tie it for big fish. I don't do a ton of catfishing in particular I mainly fish in saltwater but my thoughts on knots are whatever you're confident tying is the best knot for you.
