I always get annoyed when people take the "Then you should have saved Peeta line." at face value, but it's not your fault! In the books, it's constantly emphasized that Katniss has no social skills and that Peeta is good with people and turning them to his side. The line is supposed to be taken as "If you wanted someone to be your spokesman, you should have saved Peeta like I told you too." They don't make this as clear in the movies because they water down the characters a bit.

    • @Naahi95
      @Naahi95 Před 3 lety +247

Yep, the movies really messed up in that aspect. Peeta had such a huge role in the two hunger games and how the people perceived him and Katniss. Without him they wouldn't have make it. It's a shame that the movies didn't do his character justice.

It's really interesting how Snow lost control of the districts because he talked about controlling hope in the first movie and for him to maintain power he has to give the people the illusion of hope. Since the capitol was too harsh and too militaristic in dealing with the uprisings, the illusion of hope vanished and the people had nothing to lose, which is where the true rebellion and its true danger to existing powers really lies. I love how this movie goes so much deeper into the nuances of what a revolution truly entails and poor katniss stuck in the middle, used as propaganda for both sides of the war and only ever wanted her family to be safe

one thing that i always found so different in the movies compared to the books is the scene after the bombing where katniss comes outside and sees the roses snow dropped for her. In de movie she says ''he's gonna kill Peeta' which is why she can't get herself to do the propo. But in de books she realises that snow is never gonna kill Peeta but simply take everything out on him. Scene from the book: " It's impossible to be the mockingjay. Impossible to complete even this one sentence. Because now i know that everything I say will be directly taken out on Peeta. Result in his torture. But not his death, no, nothing so merciful as that. Snow will ensure that his life is much worse than death." and i think realising that is worse then thinking someone you love will be killed. And i think most of the older victors already knew this. I also think that's why Finnick wishes they were all dead in the beginning of the movie. Because he knows what snow will do to them. Anyway sorry for the long rant. I love these movies and the books. Also love you guys reactions. you really pay attention to detail and try to understand the characters which i don't see that many reactors doing. :)

  • @stephenmccarthy2517
    @stephenmccarthy2517 Před 3 lety +128

Though I love J-Law as Katniss, you have to try your best to remember that Katniss is only 16-18 in the series, and has already gone through a lifetime of poverty, stress, and trauma from becoming her family's head caretaker at age 12. And then she obviously goes into the hunger games at ages 16 and 17, then into warfare at 18.
One of my favorite things about this series is its realistic depiction of how war psychologically affects every type of person involved. It has a great balance of encouraging the humane morality of just wars, while also discouraging them by showing their realistically bleak and devastating effects. That is, it doesn't romanticize the sociological conflict perspective, it's more educational than it is appeasing to the targeted cathartic YA crowd.
The believability of these characters is also what makes Snow one of my favorite villains ever. He cynically understands the frailty of humanity's chaotic inclination towards self-destruction, and therefore clings to an uber functionalistic/militaristic (seemingly stable) government-run society. Every detail of Panem, including the nature of the games and the enslaved districts, had a deliberate function to him. Remember that this is a post apocalyptic society with an extremely low human population; extinction is a huge threat. He only gradually developed into a cold and calculative psychopath after his own experiences growing up impoverished due to war and post-war related effects, and within a culture that already had spiteful regard towards the naturality (or in the Captiol's eyes: barbarity) of raw humanity.
If you enjoyed this series then I highly recommend reading the prequel novel "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes", as it shows a lot of relevant and complimentary themes to the original series. It is connecting and, imo, only adds to the richness of this original series. Sorry again for the long comment :p

One of the reason why she isolates herself from everyone, why she never even considers turning her realtionship with Gale into something romantic or having something real with Peeta for the longest time is because she never wanted to get married and never EVER wanted to have children, because If she did she would not be able to protect them from the Games and she wouldn't be able to volunteer like she did for Prim.

They push too hard, they try to break the spirit of those under their boot but people can only be pushed so far before they push back. Rue’s death in my opinion was the breaking point. The fact that katniss volunteered for prim and then truly mourned rue in the games was when the people finally had enough. It all spiraled from there. That’s just my assessment.

I always found their relationship so interesting because they were so alike. In de books they also explained how in the first games katnis knew what haymitch wanted her to do based on the timing of the paracutes he sent. And how she only understood because their minds worked the same. Same with the end on voting for a hunger games withe the capitols children. He looked at her and knew she had a plan and trusted her enough to vote with her. I loved their dynamic.

Finnick’s speech is one of the saddest things to me in the movie. He was fourteen when he won the games- FOURTEEN- and people were sexualizing him. I highly doubt the capital waited until he was 18 to cash in on the money it would make them to sell him and his body out like that. Disgusting. Just another reason President Snow deserved to go down.

I absolutely love the scenes of the districts rebelling. The book is told in first person so we never got to see these events, we only ever heard of them in general. But seeing the people take these steps against an oppressive government actually helps Katniss' story because we see the difference she has made to people

I've never been a big fan of love triangles, but if you're going to include one, I always thought Hunger Games did it better than most. Instead of the two arms of the triangle trying to sabotage each other and eliminate the other, both Peeta and Gale fight for each other because of how much they understand the other means to Katniss. Peeta provides Katniss with the locket with Gale inside in Catching Fire, and Gale volunteers for the suicide mission to get Peeta. They both have other reasons for doing it, but they aren't focused on "winning" her so much as making her genuinely happy as they can in the middle of hell.

If you haven't already I would watch "the letters from the rose garden" video. Its from an extra about the first movie from the actor who plays snow and is a great character breakdown for him. Part of the reason why the hunger games worked so well. Is that they all, actors directors writers etc, got the themes running through the series. I fell in love with the book when it first came out, way back in 2008 when I was just 12 years old and have wanted to write a thesis on the book since. Suzanne Collins expertly created a world with so many nuances, that its easy to miss so many. Like for instance, the name panam. Comes from the Latin phrase panem et circenses, or bread and circuses. First coined in the roman empire about how the roman leadership literally used bread and entertainment to keep the population under control.

I think gale only volunteered to go himself and save peeta is because of what he said about peeta ealier. That he believes peeta is actually a traitor because despite all the things the capitol has done, peeta still had the guts to say nice things to them, that if it were other people they couldn't fake liking the capitol even they wanted to. So i think gale's willingness to save peeta himself is partly due to his pride. That he felt the need to show what kind of man he is to katniss.

It's sad to say that despite it all Peeta and Katniss were lucky in that they sold their love story so well neither was pimped out to the Capital like the other tributes were. Like Finnick was 14 when he won his game and if he didn't allow himself to be a sec slave they would have murdered everyone he cares about like what happened to Joanna (which is also why she is so open with her aggression she literally has nothing left to lose)

  • @beansfriend7033

I love that you're reading to this series - which is better than most people think, considering the source material is "just" a YA series - and enjoying it so much. The underlying themes are all there, and the adaptation is a good one. Thanks for that!
If you're still looking for additional recommendations, here are some that might be good.
    Comic based:
    - _The Crow_ - a good Gothic comic adaptation
    - _Dredd_ - the Karl Urban version, not the Stallone abomination
    Fantasy:
    - _The Princess Bride_ - a classic for a reason
    - _The Neverending Story_ - cheesy 80s effects, but still worth it
    - _Stardust_ - quirky but fun
    Coming of age:
    - _Stand by Me_ - nostalgic story, great acting
    - _Dead Poets Society_ - very good performances
    Lesser reviewed but worth watching:
    - _Misery_ - brilliant acting
    - _Apollo 13_ - compelling story, well told
    - _Fried Green Tomatoes_ - just a really good movie, but hard to describe
    - _Out of Sight_ - I maintain that this is the movie _Ocean's 11_ wanted to be; _OOS_ was just effortlessly cool
That's probably more than enough to tire you out for now, and I could go on for a long time if I don't stop (war movies! classics! animated!). Basically, though, you do you. You're going to have some picks that are amazing and some that might only resonate with a few. It should be a fun ride.

so neither peeta or katniss knew anything abt the revolution so at the point of that interview peeta knows nothing which is why he’s trying to comply with the capitol telling ppl to stand down cuz at that point he still believes he’s protecting katniss and himself and that it’s for the best
