Consider the problems of miners who work on Ganymede, moon of Jupiter, 390,000,000 miles from earth: isolated on a world so different from our own, surrounded by beings who know nothing of our traditions, how might these men teach their alien work-mates how we celebrate Christmas? Christmas on Ganymede by Isaac Asimov, that’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.
Christmas on Ganymede is the first Isaac Asimov short sci-fi story on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Listener Sleepy Williams requested something from Asimov and since we’re getting close to Christmas it seemed like a good time for this story.
Asimov was born in Russia on January 2, 1920, his family immigrated to the United States in 1923, and he became a naturalized US citizen in 1928.
He discovered science fiction through the magazines sold in his father's candy store.
During World War II, he was employed as a chemist at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. That’s when that he became acquainted with Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague de Camp, two other future science fiction writers.
Asimov briefly served in the Army in 1946, and following his discharge, he received his Ph.D. and began teaching biochemistry at Boston University’s School of Medicine. Asimov soon started writing short stories and then his first novel, Pebble in the Sky, in the 1940s and ’50s. For the next 40 years, Asimov wrote hundreds of science fiction works.
The 2021 Apple TV series Foundation is based on his writing, as is the 2004 movie I, Robot starring Will Smith and the 1999 Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man.
Asimov was given the Science Fiction Writers Association Grand Master Award in 1987 and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1997.
A discussion of his accomplishments in sci-fi would take hours, so we’ll save more of the Isaac Asimov story for another episode of the podcast.
Christmas on Ganymede was written in December 1940, first published in the January 1942 issue of Startling Stories Magazine. The Yuletide Season Brings Turmoil on Jupiter’s Moon and Ill Will Toward Everybody When Olaf Johnson Gets Sentimental! Our Christmas tale begins on page 83, Christmas on Ganymede by Isaac Asimov.
Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast… Undaunted by crazy tales of an indestructible presence on Asteroid Z-40, Harley 2Q14N20 sets out alone to face and master it. The Planetoid of Peril by Paul Ernst. That’s next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.

Thank you Scott!
@Sleepy Williams thank you for the request! I've narrated 3 Isaac Asimov short stories in the last week or so and all 3 are selling like crazy. In addition to "Christmas in Ganymede" we released "Someday" and "Time Pussy". More great stories on the way. Thanks for listening.
I remember reading that when I was a kid and loving it. Now it seems that Isaac was a kid when he wrote it.
Thank you for sharing @davidrobbins4857! I appreciate your comment, pretty cool to remember reading it when you were a kid. Thanks for your comment and thanks for listening!!
Thanks so much for these rare downloads Micky N London 😎☯️🙏✨
Thank you Micky!!
I lost it when “even the strongest were forced to avert their eyes” at Olaf’s impromptu Santa costume.
@cole Marie sometimes it takes more than one take to say lines like this one. I should probably compile a bunch of bloopers and post them on CZcams. Glad you enjoyed Christmas on Ganymede and thanks for listening.
@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks a Christmas Blooper Special would be Brilliant!
@Greatest YT Commentator that is such a great idea. The method I use to record means that I record over bloopers and rarely do I ever take the time to export the blooper from my recording software and export it to use later. So it does not look like I'll have enough for a Christmas Blooper special but maybe I will start saving them so we can do a first anniversary blooper special. How does that sound?
Asimov!! 💕 My favorite story of his is The Last Question.
Lol I feel bad for the Spiny animals
@Annikat I may have to narrate "The Last Question". Asimov stories are fun to narrate, "Christmas on Ganymede" certainly was. Thanks for listening!
@Annikat he was determined to tame them and he did, but yes, I feel bad for them too.
@@annikat6793 At least they got a Drink out of the Deal!
@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks It's been done czcams.com/video/FtiJZ_YZmBk/video.html for example.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁!🎅👽🤖💫🛸🚀🪐✨
Same to you! 🎄🎁🎅🏼
PKD is my favorite, but Asimov is the master. Gotta be smart to get some of his stories.
Thanks John. There's more Asimov on the way in a few weeks.

Thank you for listening and thanks for your comments. I am happy to respond and thank you for all the nice comments you've made. I am that feller, love the choice of words by the way, and appreciate your compliment. There's more great sci-fi on the way!
Love it!
@guitarfreak521glad you liked it. I am amazed at the mind of Isaac Asimov and how he was able to bring humor to a Christmas story. As soon as I read a little bit of it I knew I had to narrate this one.
Haha this was great! Poor Olaf never imagined that when he was sent to Ganymede he would end up being Santa Claus🤣
@Timothy Kohl or that he would be Santa Claus every week! Glad you liked Christmas in Ganymede and thanks for listening.
haha, very funny!! thanks for uploading!
@cora line I enjoyed it too! Thanks for listening.
Now do The Martian Way- that would be *really* good. Especially with the current battle between Russia and the Ukraine...
I'll check on The Martian Way. If you haven't already done so Theodore Seeber we hope you'll subscribe so you never miss another short sci-fi story. Thanks for listening!!
Story starts at 3:25.
Thanks for listening!!
What happened to Hallucination by Isaac Asimov?
@wendytelford9116 I'm not sure I understand your question. If you are asking when we will narrate Hallucination by Isaac Asimov, I don't think it is in the public domain so I don't know that we ever will. Sorry but we only narrate stories that we have the legal right to narrate. Thanks for listening!!
@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks you are so kind to reply. I've listen to it many times. There was something about the English gentleman's voice who narrated it and the story itself that had an ASMR effect on me. It helped me. I remember the channel having the word Vintage in it. I hadn't listened to audio books for a while and when I opened that page everything had changed. All of the regular book suggestions and things I had already watched, gone. I started frantically searching to na avail. Anyways, I thank you so very much for responding. I'm going to subscribe now to your channel if I'm not already. Many blessings.
Typo. It helped me sleep!
Many more great vintage sci-fi short stories on the way. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for listening!!
Thanks for commenting and thanks for listening!! You are appreciated.
1940! 82 Years ago..
A Real Chortler from Asimov... as the World Descends again into War..
wow
@Greatest YT Commentator Chortler! Excellent choice of words, haven't heard anybody use any form of the world chortle in a long time. I loved this story and have since narrated a few other Isaac Asimov short stories.
@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks The world is better for it!
and for having the word Chortle... and also Titter!
@Greatest YT Commentator I do not believe I have ever narrated the word titter. If I did I do not remember it.
Ho Ho Ho !
Love that story! Thanks for listening and if you haven't already I hope you'll subscribe to our channel so you never miss any of the vintage sci-fi goodness.
This was a great quality reading! Glad I stumbled across your channel, subbed!
@sean robinson thank you for the kind words! l'm so glad you found us ad thanks for listening.
@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks Am I correct in thinking I've heard you read on a Spooky Channel also?
@Greatest YT Commentator I have not done any reading for any other channel but this one. But I'm flattered that you heard a voice and thought it might be me.
@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks Wow, There was a show very similar to this...
Don't quote me but I think it was Chilling Tales for Dark Nights.
Similar format but different Genre...
Could be your twin!
@Greatest YT Commentator I listened to the channel a little bit, that guy has an awesome voice! Not me but thanks for thinking that it might be.
