  • Join me and my pup (Betty-Lou) for a cold night in the Canadian bush. I try my hand at roasting a rabbit over an open fire, and cold camp under a tarp in -28°C winter weather. It was a beautiful night for winter camping. Come join us.

What an awesome night out for you and Lou. OMG, that rabbit looked so good, what a feed. Too funny when you asked Betty Lou about fishing and pike, priceless. I think though she most likely had no complaints with the rabbit, maybe that will be her winter favourite! haha! Thanks so much for taking the time to film your adventure, great job! :) :)

Hey Denise. Thanks so much for the comment. I am far from an expert at winter camping but as far as traveling distance goes it depends so so much on the terrain and snow depth. If you're going on hilly portages with deep snow and a heavy load you're not going to get to far in a day, especially with the short winter days. If you're going across a frozen lake you can cover many kms in a day.

For both Betty and you i can reccomend a company called Jerven. Its an Norwegian company who makes a lot of great products, they also supply the Norwegian Armed Forces with products. I would reccomend the Fjellduken for you. The Fjellduken is a combination of a sleeping bag and a samll tarp. The Fjellduken is very good if you want to have more than one sleeping bag because it's so big it does not crush the insulation. For Betty i can reccomend the Jervenhiet, this is basically the Fjellduken but for dogs.
    Hope this can help:)

Oh, forgot to comment on the scarf! I love a good scarf, going back and forth to work! In the bush I find where I am bending over a lot, it dangles in places where I don't want it. I find it in my food and even the fire! I usually go with a buff in the bush, for me it is just more functional but will always love a nice scarf! Lol.

Hi Tony. It wouldn't hold up very well with heavy snowfall. When its that cold out though even if it does snow its super light. In milder conditions with heavy snow I would have to change the setup or spend a lot of time at night removing snow from the tarp.

Mids or tarps is what we use. Haven’t used a tent in quite a long time now. We tried them but with dogs on longer trips we found that the dirt they brought in screwed up to many zippers so now we only use floor-less shelters. Works great for us!
