How to trick Tom Scott into working for you.
Kyle Netherwood reminds me of Tom Sawyer tricking the other kids into whitewashing his fence.
Now again, and again, and again, just for demonstration purposes only of course.
I want to like your comment but you have 666 likes i don't wan't to ruin that.
Today on Dirty Jobs....
@@1.4142 And from now on 10 years of getting up at 5 am and doing this all day. Just to get enough footage of course.
*Dude crashes the simulator and completely topples the virtual crane*
Tom Scott: So now, I'm here in a real crane, and-
Hammond you blithering idiot!!!
"Intel i7, 3.5GHz, and a GTX 780 graphics cards"
oh...
So I can play super realistic version of arma 3?
antoni antoni ARMA 3 IS the super realistic version of ARMA 3.
@Voltaic Fire At least the 780 is a 3D gaming beast. The last of it's kind, sadly.
@Voltaic Fire Sure, the 780 at launch was very much 3d vision optimized. The card in comparison to others released at roughly the same time was memory limited, however, memory limits weren't a big issue in 3d since the bottleneck very much depended on having to render twice the amount of frames for the same fps. The memory on the 780 was as I said, not impressively big, but it was very fast (for its time). The card was in general very simple and well suited for 3d, something which doesn't carry over to newer titles.
Nvidia probably realized 3d was a bit of a meme to most people, so they stopped optimizing for it after the 780. Newer cards will of cause be faster, but they will not allow the same kind of leap in terms of 3d performance

I heard those claw machines were rigged
This is not a claw machine game
This is an OMEGA CLAW MACHINE GAME

It was attached to a rig.

Yes, Tom. You just learned to use the force.
Bless your channel. It reminds me of the good ol' days where tv shows and documentaries had cool cotent, only your channel has the added bonus of having no obnoxious cuts, narration, or music. Im so glad I subscribed to your channel! Keep it going!

It's such a shame I can give your comment only one like :/
+Martínez Solé coolest cotent on the youtubes
+Martínez Solé also no channel ident. So sick of seeing those
+jethrojangles "channel ident" ?
+Martínez Solé Indeed, they overdo narration nowadays.

I know. He looks like Dougal (Ardal O'Hanlon).
You've captured his ageless look perfectly! I never knew how to explain it to other people, and now I do! Thanks!
And yet he's neither of those; he's actually in the middle.
I would like one for my living room, thank you

Tom: "Yes, dad"
funny to think about how many random skills you gain during these videos
+JensBond I guess by "QUICK" you mean "Actually really slowley oh my god they're eating me hurry up why does it take 10 minutes to turn"
Agree, understanding a crane isn't that hard, but mastering it takes years of practice!
So you got to compare this simulator to real life.... I think it's time you made a follow-up video to the Royal Navy sinking ship simulator in which you compare the RN's simulator to a real life sinking ship :P
Nillie I watched a fascinating Ted talk from Chris Hadfield where he explains how due to his training, him loosing all vision during a "Space Walk" on the ISS, did not even scare him. They may never need it, but the will be sure thankful for when it happens and they're trained for it. Kinda unrelated but it was a great talk
Literally just finished watching that boat episode
Thomas Baldwin what’s it called?
Also since we have escape rooms we need to compare them so real life kidnap / hostage sitsuations
@@tuke3541 Please say that was a joke. I can never tell sometimes.
THE CLAWWWW! You have saved our lives, we are eternally grateful.

You have saved our lives, we are eternally grateful
I've never considered what working with large industrial machinery would be and this gives me a brief idea.
what was the most nerve-wracking part of using the actual material handler? I'm guessing it's certainly not a job people who can't deal with heights would be suited for.
The swinging claw. If it's swinging as much as that, you need to make your movements less jerky - but that's something that takes a bit more training!
+Kenji Wardenclyffe Or people with nervous ticks...
+Tom Scott Swing the arm with inverted claw phase, that should theoretically stop it 😊
+Daedalus Young In theory, theory is equal to practice.
Dude the guys who operate tower cranes... always starting 300 feet down from the top of a spindly tower, and making sure they don't accidentally smoosh their co-workers.
That moment they only use a GTX 780 /w 3 pcs
Ikr
simulator with a 780..... k
And this was 2015, they had the original Titan Xs and 980ti's back then
Look at the lack of textures and effects in that, a 780 is more than enough
Yea but if you design a simulator based on 780's, you're not running to buy the newest thing when it comes out. And I guess that the simulator is somewhat older than 900 series.
THAT was impressive, and honestly, probably the best possible use for simulators. People keep spouting about immersive games, but honestly, they have a very long way to go before a lot of people will spend the requisite money to play 3D games at home. This however, is game changing in lowering the bar of entry for specialized jobs.
+Viper magi Its how most pilots start certification for new airliners. its a great way to induce realistic emergency situations.

Just chilling here on my 3DS...
It also just seems fun.
You sure seem really nervous in the real thing
That machine cost over €1m and weighs 120+ tonnes. Damn right I was nervous!
+Tom Scott Only reasonable response. If I owned that, or I was risking my employment to let you have a go on my firm's machine, I'd be nervous if you *weren't* nervous.
+The Dolphiner a proper mistake and you wouldn't be able to walk away from it

I love how you can see Tom's hands shaking while he's piloting the actual crane.
I've done software simulators. Admittedly, mine were quite a bit less involved than a 3D render like this (I was just pretending to be a piece of hardware). But I believe everybody when they say that the controller software doesn't know it's talking to a simulator. For those unaware, *that's how you write it*. The two systems are independent, possibly running on separate computers. You write the simulator based on the hardware docs.
I still can't believe you came to the same exact lab I work in (well, I used to work in that one but now I moved to the next door) AND I totally missed that!
I don't work with Mevea though, so I guess that's why I had no idea about this...
I agree though that the Simulator is awesome as hell! I only got to try it once myself (for like a minute).
In any case, I really hope you enjoyed your time in our University!!
Let me drive the crane
I'm becoming more and more convinced Finland is the most hardcore Nordic nation.

So you've plugged holes in ships, gone to the corners of the world, and now you added industrial crane operation into your resume.
Boy how I wish I could be you sometimes.
I didn't look at the video date, heard GTX 780 and nearly spit my drink out. Boy how the time flies.
The things you get to do, wow! After watching older videos for just a few weeks now, I feel like so many of the things you've done are those 'once in a lifetime' type things where most people would only ever get to experience one but you've done so many!
- What do you want to be when you grow up?
- I want to be Tom Scott!
A GTX 780? Fuck you linus tellin me i need a 970.
In all fairness that wasn't exactly graphically intensive, the really interesting thing is the input method
Looked CPU bound
next they tell us its vista
It's actually running 95
These controls and simulators fascinate me very much. I've built my own model of a motor grader, with joystick controls, great fun to play and learn!
You have a great life. So many videos of you doing amazing things. I watch every single one. Thanks Tom!
The operator near the end helping Tom out had a really good vibe. Very wholesome
Your videos are amazing, I love how you find such interesting things none of us would even consider thinking about. I do wish your videos were longer and more in depth though!
Why not both, sometimes I like quick bites but sometimes I do enjoy a long informational show
Wow only a GTX 780
Three of them, to be fair. And remember you get diminishing returns: once you're this close, and the physics and "feel" of it is right. you have to invest a huge amount of programming time and effort for fairly minor visual improvements!
+Tom Scott very good point - awesome video
True I guess. But then again I love 4k gaming

This was really cool to watch. Thanks Tom!
Finland was mentioned, I'm in! This video reminded me of that time when my class went to this logging/construction area and there was a tractor simulator that everyone got to try it out.
You sure are living a cool life Tom! Thanks for the videos and good job with everything.
it's really fun to see you try my job and all your comments of it, great video :)
This channel is awesome! Glad I subscribed, keep it up!
I like seeing inspirational and intelligent youtubers getting to do cool stuff as a result of their videos, regardless of content. Good on you Tom, keep it up.
"Material handler simulator", that is from Half-Life
"Immediate openings are available in the areas of Materials Handling..."
I love how articulate Tom is about his excitement
0:56 Certainly he meant the simulator was run by a single Xbox One for a more cinematic experience. :^)
+Lutranereis Actually the GTX 780 is more powerful than the graphics card of the XBox One.
***** You're not good at picking up on sarcasm, are you?
+D12golden He was VERY clearly being sarcastic.
+D12golden Yeah he probably meant a PS4
+D12golden well, thank you captain obvious :D
Did not even realise you were in Finland! I however live way down to the south so I wouldn't have met you anyway but that is still awesome! Goes for the video too.
how proud he named the computer specs... made me look at the upload date :D
Welcome to an episode of "you whatched to many microsoft flight simulator videos so youtube reccommended this to you"
I love how you get to demonstrate awesome that I would not have know about otherwise.
it's so good I forget some words.....
Absolutely freaking awesome!
That sinulator is just amazing @LUT, have tried it and would recommend.
This is 7 years ago. Imagine what kind of technologies they have today.
I like how the crane operator at 3:20 is like "yeah, awesome. Now can I get back to work? I want to go home and see my kids today"
First thing I thought was "Elite Dangerous would be so much more awesome with this."
Almost got into that game but was stopped by my laziness at the point where I would've had to reconfigure all the controls to fit me better
Amazing, the places you get to go!
These look like so much fun!
They sure took a risk letting you have-at-it! :) Well done.
*2:42* Congratulations Tom! You just won the claw game! You get to keep that stuff. Hope you got trunk space in your car!
You live a great life, Tom Scott!
must have been an awesome experience
That's brilliant! Would love to see the head tracking used with a single lense of the 3d over the camera; so that the camera can pretend to lean around the cockpit. It always looks awesome when the simulation lines up with a pretend camera
I remember trying out a forest machinery simulator back in the day. One of those beasts they use to cut down the trees. It took some time to get used to, but it was a fun experience.
I guess a claw/crane operator would be a relaxing enough job... after you've learned what you should *not* do when it starts to go wrong.
Wow...how much fun was that!!!!
I would do that kind of work. I have read that operating engineers get paid very well, especially crane operators. Thanks, Tom!
This video could've been ten times longer and still would watch it.
Must have been a cool experience. Never thought of this before
so jelly.
Using that claw looks like so much fun
Tom is living his best life
Since 1993I was raised on the likes of atari, omiga, ps1 & 2, xbox and xbox 360. there were always imperfections: I could jump to something and either miss or hit it. To see computers smart enough to mimic physics in such a way amazes me, I'm surprised our tech has moved on so much in so little time. like missing some rubbish, which would all go in if it were on an old compiter. I don't know if this makes sense but I'm very impressed and excited for what the future brings :D
I can only imagine how everything looks today! Primarily given the fact that this was recorded over 6+ years ago!
That job looks fun
Oh man that must have been amazing! One of those things you dream to do as a kid, and in your adulthood.
This being Finland I wonder if likes of Ponsse are partnered with them? Those are the kind of machines you need to have simulation training before coming anywhere close to real stuff.
Fantastic video, as always! I'm really curious as to which engine they use; one of the screenshots on their website looked identical to one I saw in a Unity demo reel. They did an amazing job, but as a Unity graphics programmer, I saw a few things I would tweak to give it some extra realism :P
that looks like an amazing job.
Tom your channel is so cool😎
When you think you can't be replaced at your work, and they do it in two hours..
the cool things you get to do!
These things are so unnerving. My dad is a simulator engineer for flight sims (for pilot training), so I've been on helicopter and some plane ones. So tense - and they're huge. Big legs stretching up to about another story high, to get the amount of lift sensation to make pilot training realistic.
Holy crap! That is some impressive machinery!

Reminds me of my last job where I had to operate heavy machinery. The stress of knowing how expensive the equipment was made me queasy every day.
Now THAT looks like a fun job! Where do I apply?
That looks fun.
a simulator like this is the only safe way to conduct preliminary training for new employees when dealing with heavy machinery that can kill in fifty different ways (probably actually more).
Imagine seeing Richard Hammond on that, boy he would always somehow find a way to crash it
