- This little amp right here.....I like this amp.
What is especially fun about it is the extreme dual-personalities. At low volumes with single coils, it is extremely glassy and pretty. Once you get up to about 6-7, it BARKS!

I'm a comic book colorist from Brazil and I've recently been watching your channel while I work. Unfortunately I can't keep my guitar on my lap, but hearing you talk about music and guitar in your friendly voice makes my work lighter and more fun. That's about it, a "guitarist friend simulator" that's always there for you. Keep up the great work.
Ha! "guitar friend simulator" - I love it!
does it mean you're not gonna buy the amp ?
I finally have someone that agrees with me that the bridge pickup sucks. On mine I only use the 4th position. To each his own. I even put a little '59 Seymour Duncan humbucker in the bridge and still don't like it, too quackey.
Everything about your videos is pure quality! Playing, sound quality, music knowledge and, especially, your laid back yet enthusiastic Bob Ross presentation are pure class! Thanks.
Thanks Eric - it was fun hanging out. Dig the lessons and the gear share hangs.
Eric, kudos for showing such a deep understanding - and natural talent - when it comes to evaluate a guitar amplifier. You’re very good at putting an amp through the entire range of its capabilities. I had a feeling this new Vibro Champ had the possibility to sound as good
as my old ”vintage” one. And although a little different, it really does! You have a nice recording mic, but I get the impression (or I hope?) the final youtube outcome does come a long way in showing how this amp really do sound. Thanks for the demo Eric!
Yeah! It sounds better in the room - the m160 is a good mic, but it's a little punchy/spiky.
I ordered one last night Black Friday. I have wanted this amp since I heard the first demo. There is no bad demos of this guy.
Had this amp for about two months now. Absolutely excels at home. For me neither a practice amp or a performance amp but one that gives me great pleasure. A sparkle that is clearly missing on my Fender modelling amp.
Just an update...fed the output into a 4x12 cab this week. Huge sound!
Your demo was what made me pull the trigger on this one. Got it today. Wow, love it. Glad I have a Burgera Attenuator, but it does well with it.
Damn, you pull out so many great riffs and songs throughout your lessons!
Ahhh tinnitus was like a badge of honour when I was playing live gigs regularly. Now I'm in my late 50's and it's an isolating and sleep depriving rod I made for myself. Don't end up like me!!
Lovely amp!
I leaned my lesson the night I want to see Motorhead. Ear Plugs rock.
People need to talk about the dangers of loud so much more!
I see people doing demos sitting next to a 15w amp at 7 and I cringe - such bad role models!
@@EricHaugenGuitar absolutely!!
@@EricHaugenGuitar lol, agreed. ear-phones vs. head-phones is also something people should talk about more.

be excellent! out is rad, champ. hahaha
As a teen in the 1960's I have distinct memories of going to high school dances with live bands on Friday nights. When I got up on Saturday morning my ears were still ringing. At the time I thought it was cool.
Got the same amp in myself a week ago and it is a keeper for me too! You can't play that little guy and not have a smile on your face before you are done :-)
Love the demo, love your approach to CZcams, and I love the extra laid back vibe on your channel lately, and thank you for the all of the great content! Signed up for a patreon high five to support what you're doing.
Yay! Thanks so much man your support helps a lot!
super excellent video! You show all the interesting sounds, a delight
sun always seems to be shinin' around where you live! Fits your style of playling...
Really like your vids! Thanks man.
It's no accident!
I religiously monitor the weather and only shoot on full sun days when the sun is coming through the southern side of the room :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar that's smart, it really is...
Thanks for spreading awareness of ear coverage. I work construction and always use ear plugs because I don’t ever wanna have hearing problems you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. But rock on
Great review
Good for you Grey!
I'm always shocked when I watch those home improvement shows and the folks are smashing walls and cutting concrete with no plugs! Such bad role models!
I love the sound of that Start man, really beautiful. Nice vide too!!
Thanks man!
I love the bridge pickup on all strats! It's one of the best settings. That's why I would never put a humbucker in that position.
You've quickly become my favorite guitar youtuber!
As a guitar store owner, I decided that as we're coming into Christmas it was high time I finally fulfil my dreams of owner a decent Fender amp, and treat myself to either a '68 Custom Princeton Reverb or Tonemaster '65 Deluxe Reverb.
However, after watching your video, Eric, I've I hit up my Fender rep and ordered a '68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb. 5 watts is plenty for home noodling, rehearsals, and small gigs, and worst case scenario is I can mic it up for any more raucous gigs.
I can't wait to see how my Gretsch Falcon and FGN Thinline Tele sound through this little beastie!
Thanks for the push, my dude!
What’s the update
Mistake
I've been wanting this amp since it came out. you're making me want it more. Tinnitus sucks. I have a weird form of it from photographing bands all through high school and college. Now at 40 when volume gets too loud it sounds like a kazoo in my right ear. Saw a Dr he said he could cut the muscle which is over acting but then I'd have zero natural protection to loud noise. So i deal with it. Back to the gear. Never saw the attenuator before that is neat. Just got a new guitar a few months ago maybe I can convince the Mrs to let me get this amp once they start showing up used at GeetarCntr. Cheers from Portland, Maine.
That sucks!
But also, Maine is such a cool place!
Love that LP Jr double cut look.
The reverb is perfect, those who are complaning are the ones that needs sustain help.
Actually its one of the best hall reverbs, creates so much space.
Everyone's an expert critic on the internet hooray!
I enjoyed this "spend time with me" session. Keep on rockin!
Yummy! This setup is chock full 'o beefy tonal goodness! Love your channel, Eric! Thanks, bro!
I went in to GC to try a PRS Hollowbody II and played through one of these. It sounded so good that I waited on the guitar and brought home the amp. I loved that little amp.
Regrettably ,the reverb went wonky and defective after 2 weeks. I loved that amp. GC was great about their 45 day money back guarantee.
Unfortunately there wasn’t anymore in stock locally. So I’m now the proud owner of an original ‘68 drip edge Vibro Champ.
I can’t believe the reliability and how good this 55 year old amp sounds. Now I understand some of the vintage prices ,though I still think many are overvalued.I’m now seeing some of these reissues at pretty reasonable prices.
Loved this video! We have very similar taste. And I’m inspired even more to save up for this little powerhouse. It’s right up my alley.
Great minds think alike mon frere!
Cool little amp. Very nice sounds with the strat.
Very nice TED talk and nice setup.
Sounds killer... love that guitar
You're the best E! Thanks for making this video.
I absorbed one of your other videos where the guidance was to learn a few licks really well and to own them
I’ve been doing it with tunes off Peter Frampton’s new instrumental covers album (“Forgets the Words” clever title)
“Isn’t it a Pity” and “I Don’t Know” (and others) are master classes in phrasing and articulation. Each one made up of 100 bite sized tasty phrases
oooooh I gotta check that album out!
Frampton playing "Isn't it a Pity!" too cool!
Eric, I got the amp and I replaced the tubes with JJ's all three. What I noticed is I get more gain at 5 then I did before. So, with new jj's it breaks up sooner and sounds rich and beutiful. I use the Bugara PS1 Attenuator, which works great for lower gain amps. In my little guitar room, I have to use the attenuator to really get what I want out of the amp. This should have gotten amp of the year by the mags. Cheers.
Great review Eric thank you!
This Is very infotaining. Thanks. Very much an REM ‘Monster’ period vibe buddy.
But did you notice the opening riff was The Monkees “Porpoise Song?” 🐬🐬

Very relaxed Eric. Love it.
You can see how much I genuinely like to play with my toys :-)
Another diamond in the rough is the old Fender Frontman series. Specifically the 25r. If you swap the speaker out for a better one, you can get some amazing sounds out of it and for pretty cheap too. I put a 10" Celestion in mine and it's just a beast. Fine for a small room. If I need bigger, I'd just mic it. I love all Fender amps though. That P90 sounds rad BTW- that would sound good for on a Pavement tune. Thinking the John Peel version of Here specifically. Great video, and thanks for all you do!
i was dressed for suck!! ccess it never comes....
I tried this amp out the other day. Cool vibe for sure. Everything sounds great just like the DRRI… but the reverb is a thing… depends on the style of music but if you are used to the real thing you can definitely tell.
Thanks for this , bud . Completely sold this thing to me . Amazing ! Many thanks .
Earplugs are so important. My brother in law, who is a musician, has tinnitus. Even at loud gigs, which I love, I always take earplugs. No reason not to.
Yeah! It's not "cool" to protect your ears and yes, music doesn't sound the same with them in, but the BEEEEEEEEEEEEP is definitely worse!
Getting moulded proffessional earplugs is the best investment I have made ever. They are expensive but so worth it.
Great to hear your nod to Jim Wilsey, beautiful player & such a tragic way to go in 2018, RIP
1000%🙌
Amp sounds great Eric! Yeah, love the early Tom Petty albums!
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing!
if I wasn't won over earlier - when we got to "what is one of the worst sounds in the world..." and then the bridge pup sounded extra cool - I'm loving it
No other way to describe it but a very cool raspy trash!
Thank you. Me too. Cheers.
Well now, I know what I'm getting myself for Christmas.
Tried one of these at a Guitar Center last week was very impressed with the tone-the amp practically disappeared and it was just me and the guitar. It didn’t seem loud at all (even for 5 watts) and it seemed way too expensive for what it was, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the tone. It’s a mini Princeton.
Mini princeton is a great way to describe it!

I love that lil amp! Really wanna get one to run my Telecaster thru and learn how to play the Creedence version of Midnight Special! 😎 Thanks, Eric! ✌🏻
Ooooh that sounds like fun
True.
Way too much fun, Eric!
There's something so charming about a shiny little cruncher amp!
Nice to hear „Been caught stealing“ again. It‘s been a while.
I’m sorry to hear you having tinnitus Eric! Must be hard to ignore. I love the Fender amp! Nice riffs too!
People need to talk more about it - there’s a whole macho self destructive thing to musicians where it’s not “cool” to point out that loud noises aren’t actually safe.
@@EricHaugenGuitar I agree Eric. Take care! You mentioned it so a lot of people hear you.
Also, there's a genetic component to it - some folks (like me) are just predisposed to loss/damage.
@@EricHaugenGuitar I'm in the same boat I'm only 16 and have had tinnitus my whole life.
@@EricHaugenGuitar o, I didn’t know that.
Just run a boost or a treble booster in front of it to juice up those single coils if you need that crunch at a lower volumes. Not the same as pure power amp bliss but it will help if you do it thoughtfully.
Tinnitus isn't always caused by loudness, but hearing loss certainly is. If you're a musician and you don't have custom-fitted, filtered earplugs, you're doing it wrong. My earplugs are -9 db, which work for me in most situations. I'm in the market for a new amp - tremolo is a must-have for me. This one's high on my list.
Try a cheap over the counter. Vinpocetine. At most vitamin shop it took a lot of ringing away let me know. What u think. It cheap. Line 9 dollars.
Great video. I have a ‘70s VibroChamp - it might be my favorite amp. I bought it when they were cheap. It’s a little weird having a VC with reverb and a bigger speaker. I guess that is progress. I have a Twin Reverb - so of course I have an attenuator - I think it is a Jet City. They work - it is a great thing.
The always entertaining Eric nails it again....."sounds nice as fuck"..... 😄 keep em coming....
I have to get one of those. That and a single p-90 guitar, awesome.
For anybody who thinks they are too tough to suffer from hearing damage, watch the movie "Sound of Metal". You';ll rethink it. I wish I was smart enough to wear hearing protection when I was young. These days, the ringing in my ear is louder than most chainsaws. Great video by the way. Love the tones of this little gem of an amp. Especially with P-90's
I'm terrified to watch that movie because it hits too close to home!
I have significant damage at 8000hz and have been informed by my audiologist that at some point in my life I will need hearing aids.
Did your ringing steadily get worse year by year, or were there events that made it jump from one level to "chainsaw" level?
@@EricHaugenGuitar It varies. I think it's just a thing that has worsened over time but not so much in the last several years. The "chainsaw level" is the worse than it ever gets and I've learned that if I take something like Tylenol or have coffee, it gets bad. At other times it's barely noticeable. I've been wearing hearing protection for many years now. I can't think of anything that actually caused it to get worse. I may have slightly exaggerated by using "chainsaw" as an example but I was also really trying to get people to learn and protect their hearing. It's important and it doesn't get better. I'm almost 66 now and I have friends who are in far worse shape than I m and refuse to wear protection. Not smart. I work in a very loud shop and the first thing I do is put in ear plugs or put on ear muffs. I think in some ways though I'm fortunate in that I figured it out right away. I get my ears tested every 2 years and for the last several, not much has changed. Fingers crossed! Protect your ears! It's the law and it's a good one!
Attenuators are such a game changer. It’s helped me more with dialing in the tone I want than it has with just reducing my volume. You can really start to hear the differences in changing the volume on the amp when the actual speaker volume is kept the same.
YES!! I'm gonna have to do a separate video on attenuators - I really believe every tube amp owner should own one.
Which attenuator for this amp since it has 3.2 ohm
Also curious about the 3.2 ohm situation - just picked a Vibro Champ up today (!!!) and curious about attenuators but not sure what to look for exactly.
@@olivier7040 hey man, so i have 2 attenuators, the bugera power soak works fine so far.. ive been using for about a month now, although, is not the best solution, still too loud when not compromising tone, but! Is pretty darn ok hehe

If a song is really tricky, I use an app called "Amazing Slow Downer" to go through the song in 5 second chunks at 70% speed to hear what's going on - it takes a while!
@@EricHaugenGuitar nicccccccce!
TRUE. Thank you.
Hey great demo man! Incredible tones clean and cranked. I'm actually jonesing for one right now that i can crank to get that same pure overdrive you got. Can the Vibro Champ handle a non-PA live band situation or should i look into a Princeton or Blues Jr? I'm interested in this one specifically becase its a little more in my price range than a Twin and the like but wondering if 5w is enough, I've only ever played through 50w Marshalls and a 100wTube Driver combo.
Eric, I have been playing solid state amps for a few years, so this might be a stupid question.
Got one last week. Hearing a hissing sound as I turn up the Reverb knob (totally silent when Reverb is at 1), since it was digital, I wasn't expecting that. Does your VC do the same?
Hi. I don't know if this is helpful, but I am considering buying this amp, so naturally have been doing a lot of reading on various forums about user's experiences. A common (ish) complaint is that the reverb is really noisy with hiss. People have responded to this with surprise, saying thier's is completely quiet, and read posts of people who complained and got the amp exchanged and did not have the problem at all with the new amp.
@@adamdoran235
That was my experience, I bought one, had a loud hissing when the Reverb was engaged. I exchanged it, and did not have that problem again. I love the amp, almost impossible to get a bad tone out of it
Thanks. You are a gentleman.
Howdy. Speaking of attenuation devices, if I have a combo amp with an attenuator, does that do the same thing as the external box? Thanks and Cheers!
It *should*!
Every amp is different, but in theory, attenuators - either internal or external - do the same thing.
Can’t go wrong with that set up
Seems to be a fine & useful amp sounding very well...I have an original blackface vibro champ, but that does not have reverb on it (& needs not from my perspective). Surprised that Fender added reverb to it. Entertaining and as usual great playing, good to see you get inspirations out of new gear. Greetings from Germany.
I agree! It's convenient that they added reverb but totally not necessary!
I liked the reverb. Cheers.
You turned the awesomeness up to eleven on this video. Love your channel.

I won't be buying another amp, but I just love the way you do these videos Eric!
My work is done!
Now folks can satisfy their curiosity about what this little amp sounds like without having to buy one!
Loved watching your video man, it was fun. Definitely hit like and subscribe. Have a good one!
Yay! Welcome to Uncle Eric's Ramble Station!
Hi Eric, the speaker is 3.2 ohms. How are you running your attentuator? Is it running at 4 ohm? I have a Weber Mass 200Watt and it passes through whatever impedance is set on the amp, just wondering about your Weber Mass though.
I checked with CJ at weber before I hooked it up - he said that 3.2 is close enough to 4ohm that it wouldn't really make a difference so fingers crossed!
ive enjoyed al you have made. thanks.
Thanks so much bruh!
Eric, which microphone are you using? Looks like either a Beyer M160 ribbon or sm58? Sounds excellent!
Good eyes! it's a m160!
Dude I just got mine in yesterday..and yes it’s fuckin cool! That little beast does get loud! The 10 inch speaker is wonderful!
Yeah! Usually I don’t like Celestions very much but it’s PERFECT for this amp!
Have you ever tried Kingley tube preamp pedals (or other tube preamp pedals operating at actual tube voltage) going into an IR cab simulator? I have a Squire 86 from Kingsley that I run into an irdium and it sounds great for me - but I've never really played a tube amp at volume so I'm curious what you'd think of such a set up. I think it's a good option for bedroom players.
I haven't tried that setup but I'm sure it's good!
There's a lot of clever options these days!
True. If you like it, it’s good.
Beautiful sounds and inspiring playing, thank you! Which one do you prefer between this one and the 5w Supro? Especially at low clean volume. I’m looking for a very small combo for home playing, easily transportable from one room to another (depending on who sleeps when/where haha). Does this one sound good even at minimum volume? Thank you!
The supro sounds bigger (duee to the cab construction), buuuuut the vibro champ is easier to dial in a nice clean tone with a little reverb - you really can't go wrong with either!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Ok, thanks a lot! I’ll try the Vibro I think, but I’ve been very tempted by the Supro Reverb (that has a Master volume also…) for a while now so hard choice!
Thanks for yet another good demo. For mostly clean apartment use with the occasional fuzz pedal and a looper, would you prefer this or the 5 watt Hiwatt reissue you also did a demo of? I’m a big reverb guy, which one do you prefer? I think the digital verb on this sounds pretty nice.
Just realised the Hiwatt hi-5 does not have reverb... too bad. For band playing, I’m a 50 watt Hiwatt player so it would be interesting to try out the smaller versions. However, would not mind a little Fender flavour for my collection.
The Hi-5 is VERY bright and kinda hard to dial in. This one definitely edges that one out, especially if you like glassy Fender Reverb!
Yo Eric! Looking for your opinion. I may have a chance to buy a 1977 vibrochamp but I’m curious if it’ll be gig able for a rock band and we don’t mic up a lot. Would it hold up in the mix since it gets raspy and a little dark when you turn it up?
Friggin' cool amp for sure but not quite powerful enough to fill a stage.
I need to buy a Princeton Reverb, and then tell everyone to buy a Princeton Reverb :-)
Thanks for posting this! AWESOME you showed it with the attenuator! How would you compare this to a similar sized 60s blackface amp?
Hi Eric. At 3:50 when you've turned the reverb and tremolo off and the volume is on 6, is that purely the amp distorting or do you also have some overdrive pedal on ?
That's just p90 goodness there - no pedals!
your choice of songs is awesome guess who and mountain... !!!
Great demo! How do I know that "Ants go Marching One by One" sounding riff you played at 2:55? Is it on a Western?
Ghost Riders in the Sky - cowboy classic!
What a great demo! Interesting using an attenuator even for a 5 watt amp. Can it do Led Zep type lead sounds? Thanks again!
Yeah! Even at 5 watts this thing had to be easily over 100db!
Brilliant!!!!
I've got a '79 Champ and it's such a great sound!
Hello Jim. How about volume? Is it possible to set low volume for night practising? Thanks D.
@@davidpopelka4073 If you want to play clean, yes, you can probably get away with low volume. If you want to ROCK, then I'd say "No".
JANE'S ADDICTION!!!!! SUBBBBED.....
Thank you Erick, I love you channel, lessons and playing. Can you please explain how you are using the attenuator with no external cab and no effects loop?
Hey Eric. Fellow geet-playing, tinnitus-suffering follower here. Is it particularly difficult or expensive getting an attenuator hooked up to a combo amp? I have a VOX AC15 combo and thinking about getting the Mini Mass based on your recommendation. Just wondering about any pros and cons in doing so.
Looking at the back panel of the AC15 online - Vox has made it impossible to disconnect the internal speaker without having a tech instal a jack. Darn!
In lieu of buying an attenuator, you could invest in a really good transparent overdrive (Greer Lightspeed), or really crank the Top Boost Channel Volume and bring down the Master Volume - that'll crunch up the circuit pretty good without causing more damage.
@@EricHaugenGuitar thanks for not only getting back but for recommending some alternatives! I'll check out that transparent OD but so far cranking the Top Boost and lowering the Master to about 2-3 has been working well - it really helps get fuzzier tones with my RAT! How does the attenuator work with the Champ here?
Nice review !
Thanks buddy!
Love your demos. Would you say the amp sounds box-y in the room? Or does it do a pretty decent job of filling the space?
hrmmm I wouldn't exactly say boxy, but it does sound smaller than other 5watt amps I have.
Hey Eric! Fellow tinnitus sufferer here. What earplugs are you using? I'm trying to protect my hearing in a garage band situation, and have tried a number of ~$40 musician's earplugs, but not that impressed. Just muffled and really hard to hear and enjoy, particularly upper-mid frequencies. My band just started to mess around with an in-ear setup, but so far that has seemed lifeless relative to a live-mixed room. Also, have you looked into Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)? I've dabbled in self-treatment with that. I think a pretty popular treatment at hearing centers.
It cost me about $250 to go to the audiologist and get the custom fitted -25db plugs made. Nothing is the same as no plugs, but they do alright.
Even with plugs in, I can't tolerate being in a small rehearsal room with full band. My skull just rattles with every bass frequency - it's honestly a big part of my I do CZcams vids. It's a way for me to do music stuff at a volume I can control.
Haven't done TRT yet, but I am on a 100% inflammatory-free diet (no sugar, processed foods, alcohol) and that helps. i exercise, keep my stress level down, and drink plenty of water. Next, I'm gonna try acupuncture - if it works I'll post about it!
