Why You Should Own a Nylon String: It's The Perfect Couch Guitar!

  • It's funny that I haven't shot a vid with this old nylon string before - I've had it my whole life! This is the guitar that sat in my grandparents' attic that I would plink around with when I was barely more than a toddler.
Nylons strings are so great for laid-back & quiet practice. They're easy on the fingers, and have such a warm, midrangey sound.

Nylon-string guitars are the most common type of guitar in Brazil. That's the pure sound of samba, bossa nova, and other rhythms that require a full-sized string instrument (as opposed to being played in a cavaquinho).
It was also my first type of guitar, also found stored away in my grandmother's house. Great all-around instrument.

I'm 63 years 😢 and Spanish nylon acoustic guitar is the most popular hear in the southern Texas cities. Has been used for blues, country (Willie Nelson) boleros, classico and of course church music. I love them so much that even though I gifted a few I still have more than a dozen. Found some at pawn shops at bargain prices. God bless and start collecting.

I suffer from crazy anxiety at seemingly random times. I am also crap at meditation/mindfulness. But guitar playing requires so much effort and focus of thought that it "blows my blues away". I can't site it but I understand that evidence for instrument playing mirrors mindfulness as effective daily mental health therapy. Blues cures blues. I play every day (after hand and arm stretching as I'm not getting younger!) and despite my shocking musical memory, I am getting good enough to play live for friends and family on increasingly complex pieces. I also like to torture them so it's a win win! Keep playing Gabriel and know you are not alone. Without downs we wouldn't know ups. Even if it sucks to be plagued with downs more than some people, if we are blessed with some guitars and some time to play them, we are fortunate still. Any small and appreciative audience is a total bonus. Especially if they listen without judgement (in my case). I make anxiety induced mistakes when I play before people, but even that is improving.

Love the fact that you're shining light on Nylon Guitars. Here in Brazil, they are the most common ones to find. The ones we usually start learning to play. Maybe because of it being a Latin country, with deep Iberian roots, maybe because of Bossa Nova, Samba, and most of earlier Popular Brazilian Music are played on Nylons. Usually, after a few months playing our nylons, we put some steel strings and absolutely ruin our guitars, because Pearl Jam's Unplugged, or Nirvana's Unplugged, or maybe that's just me having started to play during that time. I have spent years without picking up an eletric one, but not a day goes by without me picking up, if only for a noodle, my nylon acoustic.

True that, in Latin America you'll find nylon guitars everywhere more than any other kind.
Also, here people don't make the distinct between folk, nylon string, steel acoustic and electro-acoustic guitars. All of them are simply called "acoustic guitar".
After years of playing I'm still surprised when I see americans saying "this is the first time I'm playing a nylon string/classical guitar, wow!" because this is the starting point for us.
Maybe they'd be just as surprised when I say I don't really like playing steel-string acoustic guitars.

Came for the nylon guitar lesson, stayed for the life story. You definitely earned a sub! I agree, every instrument worth having has a story.
Like you, I grew up on the island for the first 12 years of my life as well (thankfully the accent didn't stick around!). I also had quite a bit of musicians in my family tree, especially guitarists.
My uncle, my dad's brother, was also a collector - had guitars everywhere in his room. On the walls, along the walls, under his bed, his closet. Anyway, one of the households I grew up in was strictly religious, at my mother's house - birthdays and holidays weren't a thing.
Whenever I visited my dad, he'd always respect her wishes.. until one day, when I turned 9, my dad gave me my first guitar. It was his guitar that his brother had custom-made for him when they were in their youth.. so, mid 70s-early 80s. I tried looking up the name that's on the headstock, and haven't been able to find anything about it.
It's truly one of a kind and it has traveled all around the country with me for 20+ years.
I'm also happy to hear you say that about soloing. I was raised playing a lot of metal, but I always thought song composition and writing riffs were more impressive than shredding. As I got older, I also found that I like playing acoustic guitar more than electric. So I'll have to give a nylon some more thought!

I very much enjoyed this video. I was listening to an interview with Lee Ritenour and charmingly, as he spoke, he was plucking away on a nylon string guitar, a Yamaha NCX 5. He tells the story of how his home in Malibu burned to the ground not long ago and one of the 7 guitars he grabbed on the way out the door was a Yamaha NCX 3 (a less expensive version of the NCX 5). Long story short, I was mesmerized by the incredible random playing that he somehow was able to do while also carrying on a deep conversation. Some people it seems have all the talent. But I was left with the inescapable urge to add a nylon string to my quiver of guitars. What a lovely sounding version of the instrument we all love. Thanks again for the video.

I remember reading/hearing somewhere that nylon guitars are fairly rare in US compared to Europe because we have a greater tradition of formal classical guitar education. In fact, if your kid is going to music school, the most popular instruments are piano, guitar and violin, and the guitar is a classical guitar. More of a classical guitar by day/electric by night situation.

Nylons are actually the standart in a lot of places, here in Brazil, most of latin america and definetly big part of europe (Spain and Portugal for sure). The interesting part for me is how they lead to different playing styles. Steel is great for strumming and licks close to the nut, and you can see that in country, blues, bluegrass and rock. Nylon is easier on the fingers, and strumming is cool but the guitar leads you more to explore weird chords, scales and shapes up the neck, hence you see flamenco, samba, bossa, classical guitar (and also jazz players who play acoustics). I do love whe they are combined tho, and I'd recommend everyone Marco Pereira and Paulo Belinatti playing "Magoado" here on YT.

    • @localabsurdist6661
      @localabsurdist6661 Před rokem

Yeah they are the most common type of guitar bc you get them thrown into your face at music schools. When I was a kid my music teacher told my grandma to get me a classical guitar and I hated it. It’s not the style I wanted to play and so I started to despise playing guitar. I never practice bc I couldn’t play the songs I liked on it. In my opinion most students would actually continue playing guitar if there wouldn’t be that mindset (especially old teachers) that you have to start with a classical guitar.

Despite having grown up with steel string guitars, and still gigging with them, my go-to guitar for learning new songs, relaxing and noodling is a lower end, late '70's, made-in-Japan, Conn classical with all laminate woods that cost me $100 two years ago. Perfect neck and string spacing for my very large hands, and tone that rivals any new, lower-to-mid solid top classical I've played. The only downside is that replacing strings and dealing with their stretching and settling for a couple of weeks is a bit more of a chore. Where were you to smack me upside the head when I so foolishly sold or traded all my great old instruments and effects back in the day?

Hey Eric, I started guitar 3 years ago at the age of sixty during the pandemic on an old nylon string guitar that my wife had when should took a few short lived lessons when she was a teenager. I have since go on to own 4 electrics and an acoustic and had considered selling the nylon. After watching your video I checked the nylon guitar to discover it is a 1974 Takararu made by the Kiso Suzuki Violin Company in Japan. In other words it will be 50 years old next year! What a mistake it would have been to sell it. I have polished it up and will be taking your advice to include it in my practice rotation. Thanks for the great video. Love your channel.

What’s interesting is that the sound of a nylon is one of the most iconic sounds in country music, as arguably the greatest country artist of all time played one (Willie Nelson who you mentioned), yet it’s been completely ignored in country music for quite some time. Personally, the unique blend of white folk and Spanish music is the coolest thing in the country genre to me, and nylon captures that atmosphere the best. Steel strings have their place too of course, but there’s something beautifully humble and gentle about a nylon that a steel string just can’t capture. Great video!

Thanks for encouraging me, I am overdue to get a nylon string guitar. I got a few too many steel string, and just recently, yet again, I've been
annoyed by micro shards from the metal wrapped strings getting stuck in my finger tips and bugging me for weeks. And, yes. I like to jam away in living room with family members present that don't necessarily love my loud acoustic. Story for you, my first acoustic, a Yamaha, I didn't play it for like a decade because the action wasn't setup nice, so very painful to play. So finally I am like I need to file away and drop this action or whats the point. Best thing, I love acoustic now that I'm not afraid to hack my guitars nuts down and get action bareable. But, man those micro shards of bronze suck, and definitely the nylon has a cool unique sound. I put nylon on a Yamaha steel string guitar once, and played it for a while. A guy, maybe classically trained said, no you can't do that, guitars are made for certain strings. I think it worked reasonably well. I mean really, yes, the tensions gonna be lighter, but if it works great, maybe I'll just try that again. My favorite now is one I put a heavier string set on and it was painful, so I dropped it a full step, and I love it now dropped down to D, it just sounds super cool. Cheers.

But you can’t play one kind for like three months straight. You got to play all three all the time. The 12 gauge steel makes you strong, the 11-10 gauge on your electric makes you fast, and classical makes you stretch out.

The nylon guitar did come from wire strings. After the gut strung, gut fretted baroque guitar from the 1600's (just called Spanish guitar then) There was a shift to wire strings, as soon as they were able to place metal frets that could withstand them. Then there's kind of a blackout in it's evolution, there those guitars are abandoned and the prototypical classical guitar emerges, without any repertoire, but with a lot of theory books and methods supporting it. It was originally meant as a bass kind of instrument, to go along with mandolins and such, but soon they were reinventing the same kind of playing style for it, that the baroque guitar had before, the one where you combine plucking and strumming. Santiago de Murcia was the composer who perfected the guitar playing style that we still have today, by combining French, Italian and Spanish elements, back in the early 1700's.
The relationship these instruments have had with the lutes was one of opposition, class opposition. The guitars represented community among the classes, the lutes, exclusivity.

Acitually it was a Deluxe Reverb.
My friends and I had SOOO much fun tipping the amp and letting it fall back with reverb dimed... lightening crashes...🤣👍😎
No regrets...wasn't ready at the time.
Who knew then that the resale would get so ridiculous 🤣👍😎
      👍😎❤🖖

There's a song by Richard and Linda Thompson called, 'Has He Got a Friend for Me' which sounds just like your guitar. It sounds devastating.
