Cynthia should've been in this film, she played a big part in John's life during this time in his life. She was there for him when his mum died, she comforted him and really cushioned his blows. I hate that she's forgotten in the history of John Lennon. "We used to take the mickey out of her, but John always said he fancied her. He called her Miss Prim. He was clearly attracted to her but hid that behind a regular barrage of bad jokes about her. I was twelve then and I was looking forward to seeing her again, wondering what arty, studenty clothes she would be wearing. Mendips is right on the main road, which meant that you could see the bus stop if you looked through the upstairs windows, which is why John ran up and down the stairs to his bedroom whenever he thought he heard a bus engine. You could hear whether or not the bus stopped to let passengers on or off. When the bus did indeed deposit Cynthia on the pavement, John shouted ‘Yes!’ and then flung himself downstairs to watch for her coming through the gate. Then he sauntered through the kitchen, as if he didn’t even know she was coming and he was bumping into her in his own garden by sheer good luck! I couldn’t believe his cool. I loved it! Cynthia was dressed in black from head to toe, just like John. A couple of art students, in love and looking like art students…in love. It was tangible." -Julia Baird (John's sister)
Loved your take on Cynthia. For a time, she was a stabilizing force in John's life. The thing about John Lennon is that, after a childhood of pain where his father abandoned him and his mother was more a fun, "free-spirit" than mother; it left him harboring a deep insecurity. And from that childhood of insecurity he began to act "The Tough". E.g., "No one can touch me - No one can hurt me." It was all an act - and an exhausting one at that. I believe he really did love Cynthia, but she couldn't fill the void in his shadow self left by his dysfunctional mother and father, and so, he "acted out". Fortuitously - and tragically - music/show-biz is perfect for people who live to "act out" and for years he stepped fully into his Role as Beatle John. Decades later it looked as if he'd finally figured-it-out, but at that moment, he was taken. RIP John Lennon.
I think your comment is off the charts great! Thank you for sharing that. Your interest in the subject and insight blew me away. Aaron Johnson did an amazing job portraying John Lennon and this final scene really tears me up because of all the pain on his face and what he's gone through/
One of the best scenes in the whole movie. The emotion is so intense, evident by just Aaron's expressions. Fantastic actor, fantastic movie, fantastic song.
Who else gets emotional watching this when they see John on the verge of crying there? That's how you know it's a truly great song. I can't think of a single song made within the last 11 years that has the same effect.
I haven't seen this movie, but I have to say this is some very good work by the actors. It's quite a moving scene for me; I lost my mother, who I loved dearly, around the same age as they did. She had great taste in music and loved The Beatles above all. It was The Beatles who, in the wake of my mother's loss, inspired me to take up guitar and bass. I was completely shattered, but as the sounds coming out of that first rinky-dink practice amp began to sound like music, I gradually started coming back to life. So I can relate a bit to John and Paul in that regard, and will always be grateful to them for their awesome music, which helped light the way out of the darkest place I've been.
Dude you know all these years i'm a potterhead and only recently i was somehow stuck with The Beatles so i just found this movie, and now i know where they get all the James Potter pics to make aesthetics in us potter fandom. sigh.
I know, but it's the same thing.. because it's about struggled for the dreams. I love The Beatles because it's formed by the struggled and sacrifice which began from the quarrymen
OK, this sounds great, great version, granted, but there are SEVERAL chronological inaccuracies: 1) Julia Lennon died AFTER the recording of the 1958 demo disc that included this song, not BEFORE. 2) The backing "aaaaaaa"s where not sung by George, but clearly by Paul. George sang the low harmonies 99,9% of the time. 3) That Guitar wasn't in John's Hands until 1960. TWO YEARS after this recording session. 4) John Lennon didn't look nearly as good as that kid nor did he have so many sexy moves...
Also, the song was written by Paul and George helped with the guitar parts, but John liked to be the center of attention so he forced them to let him sing lead.
No the ahhs are clearly George, you can hear his voice come through really strong there, the mistake is that Paul clearly sings the middle eight ("I looove you" etc), not John
Omg what a film! saw this last night but missed the first hour I watched what I could of it on tv and this song is stuck in my head what a song! This is so good surprised no one has tried to re release it lately it's so catchy and I love the harmonising. It's really beautiful.:-) I kept thinking over and over of my mum though who passed away and all I kept thinking of was hours spent listening to the beatles and being told oh but you need to know before that was the quarrymen! She bought me a guitar cherry red acoustic for my birthday she took me to choose one and said no you need that one. I have never changed the guitar to this day and I love it. I can play lightly but, this above is so many geniuses in one space oh to be that gifted would be amazing. i write I sing yet, I do not have the courage to put my songs on here.My mother's wish was for me to release them and sing but, sadly I am just too shy when it comes to public.
It's really not THAT great of a song. At the time, it was little more than a ripoff of "Trying To Get To You" by Roy Orbison (also recorded by Elvis). Paul McCartney even admitted as much long before the Quarrymen version came out (he didn't name the song at the time).
This scene says more than it lets on....the recording of this song occurs shortly after John's mother is killed by a drunken driver....following this horrific tragedy, John could have gone down the wrong path - booze, petty crime, etc...but he instead takes solace in his music. Wise move as it turns out.
I'm impressed that Aaron Johnson is able to capture that true Lennon tone with his singing. (Interesting side note: He looks quite a bit like the old Beatles drummer, Pete Best.) The boy playing George has a nice voice too, from what I can hear.
Every day I get home from school, grab my guitar and jam with these guys till my fingers hurt :) you should hear it, I sound AMAZING with them lol :) I could have been the 5th beatle, well Im a girl so Idk how that would work, oh yea, I could just have married John, no big deal and also have been born like a decade or so ago, despite all those things it would work! :)
Hell of a movie, amazing performances, Mr. Johnson was spectacular portraying the young troubled and confused John Lennon. I enjoyed this movie immensely. This kid can act!!!!
I recently met this girl. And now I love her more than any person I’ve ever met in my life. I’m scared of what is about to happen in the future, but next time I see her I need to tell her how much she means to me and how grateful I am for every moment I may share with her. She’s not feeling well right now and I told her to take her time. I haven’t spoken to her in a couple of days. Tonight my friends and I are meeting up and record our version of this song and I will send it to her and hope it will make her feel a little better. Thanks to everyone, who’s reading through this. I’m crying right now. I just want her to feel alright and make her happy.
Loved~loved this movie. I've to Liverpool and the location is authentic. Took a tour of Lennon's boyhood home~ that's it in the movie. Thanks for posting this.
The change of the guitar pattern here at 1:56 is very close to the riff of Nowhere Man, a song from Rubber soul. It's really beautiful, this movie just having a four-second of the essence of John's most self-defining song (at least in own mind) and naming the movie around it is just cherry on the cake.
I loved the movie, cried my eyes out! and when Julia was hit by the car, everyone gasped..deadsilence.. and then the music started again. AMAZING effect. Think this cover is done pretty well too! Though noone can top the original! never!
One of the greatest emotions and happiest moments of my life was listening to Paul singing it and tons of people and I singing along to him this song at his concert last year.

A great song and scene from "Nowhere Boy"....LOVE it so much : ))))))))))
Amazing song
Aaron Johnson did an amazing job portraying John Lennon and this final scene really tears me up because of all the pain on his face and what he's gone through/
One of the best scenes in the whole movie. The emotion is so intense, evident by just Aaron's expressions. Fantastic actor, fantastic movie, fantastic song.
Who else gets emotional watching this when they see John on the verge of crying there?
That's how you know it's a truly great song. I can't think of a single song made within the last 11 years that has the same effect.
I can't stop listening to this 😍 and Thomas Brodie Sangster💜
This part made me cry! This guy was amazing ♥️
They even matched the movements SO well. Without context, you could seriously tell who is who. SO GOOD.
I love James Potter
Hehehe
You can find a fellow potterhead in any part of the Internet
Same
Yassss
Dude you know all these years i'm a potterhead and only recently i was somehow stuck with The Beatles so i just found this movie, and now i know where they get all the James Potter pics to make aesthetics in us potter fandom. sigh.
such a great acting from Aaron Taylor Johnson
Ohh that tbs really hits your heart with his attractive everything. He is sculpted by the gods and blessed upon us 🙏❤️
i love Paul
i love the beatles and i love this movie...
Aser parera quarrymen not the Beatles mate
so what? he loves the beatles
Aser parera still the same thing but with different band mates
I know, but it's the same thing.. because it's about struggled for the dreams. I love The Beatles because it's formed by the struggled and sacrifice which began from the quarrymen
Apa judul ny
OK, this sounds great, great version, granted, but there are SEVERAL chronological inaccuracies:
1) Julia Lennon died AFTER the recording of the 1958 demo disc that included this song, not BEFORE.
+Juan Ignacio Vitale I agree with the first three ;) Having 'George' sing the 'aaaa' always bothered me because it's clearly Paul
Yeah. She died 3 days after! Muhuhuhahahahah
Sorry just to point out that the aaaa bit was actually sung by George and Paul sung a long side as well
THOMAS IS PERFECT♥♥♥
This is one of my favourite songs ever!!!! Especially George's part!
Paul McCartney even admitted as much long before the Quarrymen version came out (he didn't name the song at the time).
rnrscrapbook whats your point? it might be a rip but its still a great song :D
This scene says more than it lets on....the recording of this song occurs shortly after John's mother is killed by a drunken driver....following this horrific tragedy, John could have gone down the wrong path - booze, petty crime, etc...but he instead takes solace in his music. Wise move as it turns out.
That song make me to remember my mom in heaven
Thank you for creating this movie.. because of this.. i even more inlove to that so called nowhere man I LOVE YOU JOHN LENNON😍😍😘
I'm impressed that Aaron Johnson is able to capture that true Lennon tone with his singing. (Interesting side note: He looks quite a bit like the old Beatles drummer, Pete Best.)
The boy playing George has a nice voice too, from what I can hear.
This song is so personal to me one of my favorites and I love how this version is that bit more emotional
Hell of a movie, amazing performances, Mr. Johnson was spectacular portraying the young troubled and confused John Lennon. I enjoyed this movie immensely. This kid can act!!!!
These kids are great; but the Beatles were fucking GENIUSES!!
This song brings me nostalgia from a time I wasn’t even alive
All I see is James Potter
Oh my gosh, that's what I always see when I see this movie.
Hahaha me too
***** what?
So true, especially when he wears the round glasses
If it's the fictional character...hm yeah :)
What about a Harry Potter movie where Lily meets,James when they're young. :D
"We just need a Ringo now!"
Newt!
Ваня Феоктистов he's dead hm
I love the song and the movie💓💓💓💓💓🔥🔥🔥😢
The Directing does a good job at making this a real cool film.
God, do I ever wish they had professionally recorded this song!
They do.
I wish i could go back in time and show them how succesful their gonna be
hi i love this song i am the biggest beatels fan
Watched this film last night. Really good I thought. Imagine being around them at the time and seeing the group grow!! Where's my time machine.
0:09 This adds something to the song. Really enjoy those words and they fit with the melody
thomas sangster
I am so glad my local theater was playing this movie. It was fantastic!
I love john lennon
I always love who they casted for John because he's it's just funny to think about a jacked John lennon
+MrLegitSkittles compared to a scrawny paul
I think i have listened to this song about 200 times in the past three days, i just can't get tired of it.
Aaaah Toommmyyyy❤❤❤❤❤❤
Even I was born in the wrong era, I'm sooo inlove with this song 😍❤
Que Belleza de versión!!..... Increíble película!.. para mi gusto, muy bien relatada la durísima vida que tuvo John Lennon
Loved~loved this movie. I've to Liverpool and the location is authentic. Took a tour of Lennon's boyhood home~ that's it in the movie. Thanks for posting this.
Yep, me too. It's on Menlove Ave. The locations were authentic. Wonderful film.
this is the most underrated movie
That scene when John and Julia are dancing together
Why isn’t this biopic as popular as like you know the “Selena” movie, this is really underrated smh
Because Paul hated this movie.
great movie, and did anyone else notice how spot-on paul's movements were?
Right there says it all. They were always meant to be. We’re blessed
i just have one thing to say: Aaron Johnson, who plays John Lennon, is SO HOT!!!!!!
I love this song. I wish iTunes would sell it as a single. Aaron Johnson was amazing in this movie. He will be a big star.
i listen to this and think about them
The change of the guitar pattern here at 1:56 is very close to the riff of Nowhere Man, a song from Rubber soul.
Though noone can top the original! never!
In spite of playing it back over and over, it still good as it was like you first listened to it
One of the greatest emotions and happiest moments of my life was listening to Paul singing it and tons of people and I singing along to him this song at his concert last year.
Música fantástica. John, Paul e George. Os atores estão muito bem representados. Acho esse filme triste, comovente. A história de John foi realmente muito 😢 triste
