It’s kind of sad what happened to Galway seeing this. Lived there for years in the westend years ago, new street west, a stones throw from the crane, the best pub in Galway city, or it was, haven’t been in years. Great sessions. All that tarmac all over shop st, the character is gone, it used to be a great town.

The tarmac was a welcome replacement for a brutal cobblestone job that was done after Shop St/High St/Mainguard St were pedestrianised in 1998. By the time the cobbles were replaced, it was costing the city millions in injury claims by people who were hurt after tripping or twisting an ankle walking along the road.
