  • This is my formal apology for how many times I said the word 'definitely" but my opinions about food always feel very final so, respectfully, deal with it!!! :D
Also to anyone viewing from Ireland please forgive my American English spelling of things it's just who I am!! 0: I'm sorry!!! D:

    From a galway native
    Restaurants:
    Kai - Irish/New Zealand food
    Kappa Ya - Japanese food
    Scotty's - American food
    Cava Bodega - Spanish food
    Kumars - Indian
    Il Vicolo - Italian
Best coffee is probably from Ciarlantini

I lived in Galway for 3 years. I also quite liked Kai, though Ard Bia was probably more my go-to for high-end cuisine, and also the Black Cat over in Salthill when I was living out that way. Never made it to Aniar or Loam! I really liked Kappa-Ya, in fact, they probably have better donburi than anywhere I know of in my native San Francisco area! Wa Sushi is fantastic too. I hadn't been to Il Vicolo and now I wish I'd tried it. My go-to Italian restaurant was La Collina in Salthill. Also a few doors down in Salthill is Robertas, which in my opinion is the best fish and chips in Galway - even better than McDonagh's in my opinion. Though the best seafood overall was over at Hooked, which is in kind of an out-of-the-way corner of the West End, and another location out in Barna.
You mention one of my other standby's, Ciarlantini, without mentioning the delicous pastries - it's the best Italian pasticceria I've ever tried, not having been to Italy, and at a level I can't seem to find back in the San Francisco area, even at the highly-rated bakeries around North Beach! But in terms of the best coffee, Coffeeworks was my go-to, though Ré Coffee, which opened in Salthill right before I moved away, I think now has the mantle of best coffee in Galway - they have an absolutely lovely, citrusy macchiato that's very much to my tastes.
What I unfortunately had a harder time with was finding traditional Irish dishes that were well-made in any of the restaurants. In fact, for a really good cottage pie, I think the ones you get in the warm-up meals case at Supervalue are better than any I had in the Galway pubs, though the very best take-home cottage pie came from my old standby, Morton's of Galway. My favorite Irish pub, for both food and music, was a bit further out - McDermott's Bar in Doolin.

Good video! I go to Wards all the time, I work as Paramedic in Galway so it is convenient, and great food, Jungle is great also. I have to say I won't try Pasta place as I just don't like pasta. I go to Skeff on days off sometimes and love it because the food is good and it is always warm in Fall/Winter but also the benches are SO COMFORTABLE!!!! I will try Sangria!
