Stripping a Perfectly good Holden VF Ute For The Engine!

  • This 2013 Holden VF Commodore Ute was recently Written off by an insurance company due to being involved in a flood. Usually a flood-damaged car can be quite expensive and troublesome to repair but in this case, the flood water didn't enter the engine or damage any electronics making it a perfect donor vehicle for an engine conversion.
I'm very excited for this project and keen to get stuck into the conversion next week! comment below what vehicle you think this engine is going in!

Hey Woody, couple of things it would be a good idea to check. 1.The ring gaps, boosted engines have hotter combustion temps, if the ends but together the ring lands will crack off the pistons. 2. Check the rubber seals on the plates at the front and rear of the cam. Also change the bar bell in the rear of the oil gallery, both of these can cause low oil pressure if they leak. 3. Check inside any of the electrical connections that have been under water for signs of water/corrosion, if they look OK spray the insides with electrical cleaner/corrosion inhibitor. This will usually prevent electrical faults/codes down the track.
It would be great to see it go into a group C style commodore with big flairs an tyres.

In the US, cars like the Ute were what we'd call a 'coupe utility', or most folks would say "Like an El Camino". Pickup trucks here are just smaller versions of larger trucks more or less, and anything that looks like a coupe or sedan with a bed would be considered something else. Technically, we had these all the way back in the 30's with several cars having truck-style beds or a trunk space that could be converted to a bed, but back then truck cabs and car cabs weren't really all that different looking. For something really comparable to a Ute, we had the Ford Ranchero first in 57, followed later by the El Camino/GMC Sprint/Caballero and the Dodge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp, and they also sold the Toyota Corona Mark II pickup here (that one looked much more like what we'd consider a pickup truck, but it definitely had roots in the Mark II passenger car) here. Later on we got the Subaru Baja, and I feel like I might be missing a couple other ones.

Appreciate the shout out to the USA viewers. Here in the USA we would see this Holden as a modern day Chevy El Camino. Then there is the whole debate here on what is really a "truck". You have half the folks saying body on frame is a "real" truck vs unibody is a car pretending to be a "truck" haha. This car/truck would have sold well here in the USA but the "truck" market is flooded and competition would be tough probably why it never came here. Personally? My favorite hot rod truck of all time is the 1991 GMC Syclone. Man I would love to have one of those...Cheers from California USA to all my Australian car loving Brothers and Sisters!!👍

In true LS form, that rear main will leak now the engine has come out, I'd bang a new one in for sure. I've had to pull a few engines out again and put a new rear main in as they leaked just from disturbing the engine 😂
For the sake of $50, I'd recommend it

Hi Woody, loving the videos mate, I reckon the LS is going into an old one tonner Ute, should put a Barra turbo in the VF and do a drift Ute build 😂

Gal bots are only suited to gal nuts.
The thread class tolerances are huge to allow for the coating.
Gal bolt in an uncoated or zinc plated clearanced hole = no good...as you've found.

Good thing about the L77 it came from factory able to run E85 but bad thing about them is single row timming chain upgrade to double row if can might save engine if the single row fails

Wild the VF is so old now, even the last ones are 7 years old now. You're right about a stat write off, especially a flood damaged one, it's a whole lot of work since you can't trust any electrics, any wiring, and all that.
Good source for a nice drivetrain though.
Also, fun fact, the utes are actually slightly heavier than the wagon versions since they added more bracing for strength at the back

I'm amased that was written off if the water didn't get into the car, 300mm is just a big puddle to us in the UK! It's quite a shame it's ended up scrap as there won't be anymore Holden Utes to come so this is another one gone never to be replaced.
