I was 13 in 1981 playing junior high football ,and watching TV.
I was 14 in the summer of 1981. 15 in September. I had a laser disc player too! I paid $400 for an Atari video game from Radio Shack! STILL have it and over 350 games! That was MAJOR technology back then! I miss my Evil Knievel stunt bike! Remember having to get off the couch and walk across the room to change TV stations? My world was rc cars, dirt bikes & FOOTBALL! Played at the creek all day. Why not? No cable TV or cell phones! Those were the days!
Thanks for the memory share Brian ! I recently got rid of my old disc player and the movies... I hadn't played it in years but it was hard to part with :(
@@Johnnyboy792 I REALLY miss my Evil Knievel toy collection. It was all autographed by the King!
All the stuff I didn't have then, I have now! I was born in 1967.
@@33fastcar Thanks again Brian... your 1967 Birthday video is on my page too :)
Wow, I was 21 in '81! With all the nonsense going on these days, seeing this video makes me kinda wish for these simpler times! This generation might think that these times, were kinda corny, hokey & dull, but this was a really great time to be alive for my generation! Thank you for sharing this video, and the trip back down memory lane 👌👍👏🏻
Corny, hokey & dull ? No way. Still a time when movies were affordable... and the family stayed in the same room to watch TV. Thank you Roberto :)
I was born in 1999 but I wish I was born around 40 years earlier.
@@jjahsepuyeshd Que the tired old "if you were a white, Christian, male" snippet.
The year I graduated and joined the Army!!!
"...simpler times"??? wtf?
I was searching for bottles in ditches to get quarters for the Donkey Kong machine at the local seedy game room.
And eating the foot long Marathon candy bars.
prezadent There is a candy shop in my local area that specializes in candy and soda from years gone by that is nearly impossible to get. I don't know how or where they get the stuff (I hope it's not from a hidden 50 year old stash) but they have every possible childhood candy you can remember....Marathon bars of course....they've even got candy cigarettes which were big in the 60s and early 70s during my childhood. Never quite had the guts to actually eat anything from there though lol.
Oh send me that address... sounds like a great road trip !!!!
That was actually a current problem back then.... kids not buying their lunches at school to play video games LOL
We’d go visit the local laundromat and unscrew the washing machine agitators, pluck the change, then carefully replace them. Always walked out with several bucks!
This was very well done, it was the year I got married. It brought back happy memories. I wish simple times like those were still here. Though I wouldn't be watching these on my phone!!
Some of those songs were what I considered "skating rink songs"...I was 10 or 11 years old that year.
I was 13, fresh teen, with so much dreams and hopes , some became truth, some not, o, sweet memories 🌸🌼🍀💓
Thank you Ines :):):)
@@Johnnyboy792 You're wellcome, Johnny😊
I love these time capsules of yours! So well done! Such an excellent slice of the times! Totally thumbed up!
Thanks so much I.T.E.. More coming down the road :)
I was 10 years old...great memories.
What an amazing year......Thanks for the memories
I remember the wedding of Princess Di and Prince Charles. I was 10 and my mother told me to come sit down and watch with he. She said this was history and that many years from now I'll remember this moment and it will be talked about for generations. My mother passed away in 1986 and this particular memory I hold dear, watching this little bit of history with her.
P.S. I love all of these but the 80s were my fave decade. Could you do more from this awesome 10 years? Esp mid and the late 80s?
Donna Lynn , I was 13 I stayed up for 3 days. I didn't want to miss any festivities they would show. I did everything Diana, I cut my hair like her, dressed like her, even taught Pre-K. If I'd only known then what I know now! She was a wonderful person, but she had her issues like everyone else. So sorry to hear of your loss, what great memories to have of your Mama!
We're that same age..and I watched it with my mom too. She passed in 2006.
I agree with you. What a glorious time to be alive. So many memories of that time. :)
Tried to force us to watch it. We took the only station that didn’t carry it
So innocent, romantic, really entertaining, respectful and classy.
Thanks so much Marcus !!!
The '70's, 80's and 90's sure did entertained, shocked as well as saddened us.
I was 11! It’s been a while but it’s wonderful that you’re posting again 👍🏾👌🏾!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks my friend. A lot of research on this eventful year. All the best to you. :):):)
Me, too!
Graduated high school in 1981. Good times and this vid is a blast.
Many thanks Michael !!! :)
I remember "Luke and Laura" from General Hospital it was on one of the 5 channels we got at the people's house I was staying somewhere in the sticks... They were glued to the TV I couldn't care less... but now I can pinpoint the date ....
I will never forget this year. I was 16. It was a fun time.
I was left back in 9th so I cut school out in February, walked around Manhattan doing messenger work for Mom and betting horses. Got really good at the track because of the baseball strike giving me all summer to handicap and bet and read. Love life sucked but got great in early 1982. Skated a lot too. Not a bad year all things considered.
Not bad myself :)
Thanks again, I am still watching your videos! I was in 11th grade in high school on this one, so I do remember most of this very well, lots of good memories here for sure.
I remember my mom covering my eyes during the face melting scene in Raiders when I was 7. A lot of the other movies were HBO mainstays
LOL too funny :)
Fantastic video 👌
WOW that was a long time ago.
I really enjoyed seeing all of the things that were going on during that year.
Thank you for posting.
I remember the movie Nighthawks when I was 6.
I was 20 and going to the local Jr. Collage. Ah, the memories.
This is fantastic! I wish there were more recaps like this from the 80s...amazing decade
Hey welcome back Johnny, you were missed.
Hey Drac ! As you can see... like you I only come out in the dark LOL. Thank you so much my friend. :):):)
It was Welcome Back Kotter, not Johnny. ;)
Your memories of years gone by videos are the best JB. Hope all is well with you and yours and thanks for a walk back thru the great years of our youth. Always great
Thank you Stephen.. ( I see you're an insomniac too :). Some wrote me recently that the videos were a greta teaching tool for his son in terms of history lessons. I never thought of it like that but it made me feel good. Thanks again my friend :) - JB
Hey Mr. Johnny boy, you've been absent too long. Glad to see you back, and I was a freshman in high school in 1981. I loved the 80's!
Hi Elisa ! Couldn't believe the amount of research on this eventful year. More 80's stuff coming down the road and your pimples might break out all over again :) All the best - JB
Another leisurely stroll down memory lane. Thank you!
Many thanks my friend :):):)
Johnny, I wish you a Merry Christmas! Thank you for those great memories!
:):):)
1981 was a pivotal point for me, I moved from the city to out into the country.... total cultural shock. When I moved it was like I time traveled into the past, or another world... country people where so much different, they where not in with the times....
Was that a good or bad thing in the end ? :)
@@Johnnyboy792 eventually not so bad, I'm still living out in the country on a little farm with grand-kids lol... but wow, back then it was a cultural shock.... I was in my early teens. I went from arcades, comic books, playing in a band etc... to small town country folk, coyotes, wolves and mountain lions lol.
@@blsemetan7232 That was shocking lol. Thanks so much for watching !!!
Thank you... I wish we can go back in time to relived some of the greatest time...
Me too :):):)
Another masterpiece! Thank you for posting! We watch these as a family and I enjoy pausing these and explaining the details about the events to my 14 year old son. Thanks!
That warms my heart all over. It's actually a pretty good historical time machine too Thomas. Important things that should be known. Interestingly I was at my chiropractor this morning and two people over 30 had never heard of the Chappaquiddick incident or what took place there. I was stunned. Thanks again :):):)
if you want a true glimpse into 1981 you need more than clips from TV and movies, because most kids were outside all day. TV and movies were only a small parts of our lives. i saw 1 to 2 movies a month. the rest of the time we were out riding bikes, swimming, or hanging out at the mall or arcades, or working mowing lawns and delivering newspapers
Hello Hans. I thought it covered most things. News, Sports and music. :):):) Thanks for watching :)
Amazing video. Thank you very much for this.
Many thanks Mr Smith :)
Here's is Johnny, your back.Great video like always thank you.
Big Lou !!! Thanks buddy. I hope it brought a smile !!!!!
my senior year in high school...great year...thanks for the video Johnnyboy
You were one year behind me Glenn :) Our memories are just the same :):):) More coming... Thank you - JB
Now that is more like it! My decade! I was so fortunate to see Raiders at the theatre with my dad, I was 8!
Im coming I'm Coming :):):)
Right in the middle of my high school years 👍👍👍those were good times. Got to love the 80”s I’m 54 now thoes we’re good times.
56 Myself... and I so agree :)
These are great. Wish you had them all up to today. Thanks for posting these.
More coming down the road Maddog... (Love that Name) !
In 1981 I was in the Panama Canal Zone and we got General Hospital on the 1 Armed Forces network channel, 10 or 12 Paratroopers to a room quietly clustered around 12” TV’s watching Luke and Laura. Thank you the entire video was great, I was smiling the whole time.
Looking back now.... man were they hammy :)
That was fabulous, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much Mary.... hope it brought a smile :)
You knocked it out of the park brother!! Glad your back! Keep up the great vids!
Hey Caddyshack714 ! Thanks so much for tuning in. A lot of research on this eventful year :):):)
heavy shit right? dude is deep man
June of 1981, got my first and last overseas assignment to all places Italy 😱. It was a 15 month tour and I love every minute of it.
I truly don't know how I missed the notification on this one but IMO
this is the best one you've done Johnnyboy! 1981 was a special year
for me as I was entering my teenage years that fall. It was truly an age of discovery for me. I have nothing but great memories of the '
year and one that holds a special place in my heart. Of note for me:
Raiders of the lost ark, Bette Davis eyes, First Space Shuttle launch,
The Fall Guy ( OMG Heather Thomas in that Bikini! ) and last but not least my childhood hero Terry Fox ( As a Canadian myself He's legendary ) I want to thank you again as always for the great memories you stir up for me. Cheers friend!
Hey Randy ! It was usually a tough choice between Heather Thomas & Heather Locklear LOL. Im very happy it brought you back to a well remember time. I was very touched by the Terry Fox movie when it aired and so he deserved to be remembered. All the best and 1982 should be coming out soon :) - JB
I was 8 years old in 1981. I remember 90% of all this.
Thanks J.C. ! I hope it brought a smile :)
Thanks for the free ride to Nostalgiaville....
I was 10 years old in 1981,I remember when Reagan was shot.
These are absolutely fantastic man. Thank you so much for the effort into putting these together! As a historian I find this extremely beneficial!
Hi Colin ! Interesting you should say that. A father wrote me the other day who home schools his son and uses it as an educational tool which warmed my heart. I had never thought about it like that. He pauses to expand and explain on certain things and his 13 year old really enjoys it. Thanks so much for tuning in to watch. All the best to you :) - JB
I hope as an historian you can have major things in footnotes on why in which way those times were better than in 2020 on or working up to it . Many miss out or skip over the fact that morality in scruples is lacking now and is less heart in it . The way the young are taught and raised are lacking in many ways and wouldn't be fixed maybe since society forgot how since even Anerican life is screwed up as now. People appreciated even birds on the yards or porches and out the window then in 81 still . Now nobody has time or thought to even think like that . Those days of that had kept things more pleasant not dull at all . Nature just was there pleasantly mundane to get away from a corrupt situation or hard times mentally .
The year I graduated high school. Definitely good times! Thanks again Johnny Boy as usual great memories. Thanks!
Back at you Buddy.... as my Marine girlfriend says... OOO-Rah !!!!

1981 was a wonderful year in my life! I was a junior in college, I turned 21 and I didn't have a care in the world! Life was all party, party, party......hahaha!!The times really were a lot simpler!
A very nice job-great fun! Thank you!
Thank you Caine !
This is wonderful! I was only 5 years old, but I remember so much of this!
Hi K.S. ! Im happy it brought a smile. Thank you - JB
Thanks Johnny, great job as always..seeing Stymie and Breezy really makes me tear up thinking about my childhood!! God Bless.
Hey Frank ! Those Rascal shorts still bring a smile to my face and so I thought it was appropriate to add those two beloved child actors. ( "I don't wanna be President... I wanna be a streecar conductor" ) lol still makes me laugh :)
@@Johnnyboy792 they weren't 1981 were they? Or were they 81 re run hits? There's some songs that seem older too?
I seen natalie wood in a black and white 1966 film. I Googled her and she died in 1981. I see now. 💪 I fuckin love these videos by the way. 😎 thank you.

Welcome back Johnny...love all these memories 💕
Well thank you Sophia... that's a nice welcome. This one took a lot of research :):):)
Johnnyboy792 Haha..must have been a busy year then 😂
So True :):):)
More 80s please!
This was amazing. I mean, very good ! I'm old (60..... ish) and can remember this. Truly this was a very impressive array of different video's. Thank you for posting this !!
First of all.. you're not older... just better :). Secondly... thank you for watching Randall. I enjoy putting together these time machines for others to watch. All the best to you - JB :):):)

Famous celebrities born in 1981
Britney Spears ( born December 2 ) and she dropped out park lane academy in after right her freshman year
Natalie Portman ( born June 9)
I was 4 when my mom was listening to Bette Davis Eyes on the radio. Good childhood memories.
I forgot how many truly great movies, were made in 81.
Junior in high school, just got my drivers license, and my father was cancer free-at least for that year.
Awesome Jonnna !!! At last haps news on the web :):):)
I graduated from High School and started my Freshman year at college. For the first time in my life, I felt like I really belonged somewhere. Yet, after looking at this video, I can't believe the movies, TV shows, and hit songs on the radio, really sucked! Even the commercials were lame. What a crummy year! LOL!
Im hoping it still brought a smile Paulette LOL
You're crazy. The music, most of the shows, and the movies then were a durned sight better than anything released now.
Too bad you were forced at gunpoint to watch this.
Great capsule for 1981, I’m was 2 years old😅
Thanks Devin !!!
A nice look back! Year I graduated from college.
Hi Tom ! Many thanks for tuning in :)
Thanks for the video! I graduated High School that year.

@@redsammy7789 So did I..... man was I nervous !
I was 2 and i don't remember any of this, but now i will forever remember farrah being a bit chilly.
Missed 1981 by five months. Born in Spring 1982. Great video, though!
82 is coming Mike :):):)
1981? I was settling into my first semester at CTI (Columbus Technical Institute, now Columbus State Community College)! And those CED video players! I think it was 1983 when we got one; one of my brothers had bought one and a bunch of discs for it, then ended up pawning it. He was about to lose it in pawn so I got his pawn ticket from him and paid to get it out (around $250 for everything).
Ultimately, while I generally liked the machine it had a nasty habit of messing up the picture because it still relied on a needle cartridge to play and those dull over time. I recently found a player at a local thrift for $3.93 and a few discs on the cheap, but the needle needs a replacement. Yet another relic of days gone by (like myself :) Thanks for the trip back!

Hi Ted ! As I told Tammy B.... I was 18 this year and the video disc player was a present to me from Moms. It was The RCA player exactly like the one seen here. Along with this she also bought the original Rocky disc because she knew I loved the movie so much. One of the best gifts I had ever gotten. Too bad it was outdated 2 years later LOL. It was only hauled away a couple of years ago. Hadn't played it in 32 years but still miss it.
1981 I turned 21 years old. Thanks Johnny Back then I was bulletproof so I thought.
Didn't we all Del lol....now I'm making sounds getting out of bed I never heard before :)
Johnnyboy792 1988 I had surgery for a ruptured brain aneurysm. I figured ok I survived. Then I found out 1 in 50 people have a brain aneurysm and once you’ve had one you’re 20% higher at risk. Almost 3 years ago I got scanned and found a2mm aneurysm between brain half’s next to a clipped one. LOL life goes on
Do more 80's please.
Good stuff, Maynard.
Loving these...hope you are going to do All the 80s PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
I will try my best Koopa... with the exception of me getting hit by a bus :)
1981 was the year of the Rubik's Cube. I set the first world record on Oct 3 at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ: 24.67 seconds. Didn't realize that was 2 weeks after the Simon & Garfunkel concert in Central Park - also one of the best days of my HS years. I remember the day Reagan got shot very well too. Just 4 months after John Lennon, the pope weeks later
This is awesome! I was 8 years old in 81. I remember my aunt and uncle had one of those laser disc players, I thought it was the coolest thing 😂 Arthur is still one of my favorite movies ❤
Hey Tams ! I was 18 this year and the video disc player was a present to me from Moms. It was The RCA player exactly like the one seen here. And thank you too for watching..... P.S..... I did keep the Rocky Video Disc... I swear :):):)
Turned 13 that year .............. what fun it was
A great time to be a kid for sure :)
- "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was a sensation! Harrison Ford was finally a big star.
- "Superman II" was actually shown in theaters this year. Kneel before ZOD!
- "For Your Eyes Only" with Bond (Roger Moroe) finally killing Blofeld. Lynn-Holly Johnson one of my dream girls. Big theme song by Sheena Easton, and she actually appeared in the opening credit sequence while singing the song, the first time we saw that in a Bond film
- "Arthur" and that song about the moon in New York City
- That Vangelis music in "Chariots of Fire"
- "Reds" with Warren Beatty actually got him the Oscar for Best Director. Over 3 hours long in the tradition of the 1950's and 60's screen epics
Fernandomania. Pete Rose set record for most hits in NL. Reggie Jackson's last stand for Yankees. Dodgers rally to win it all. Baseball was affected though by strike. 1/3 of season gone.
First titles for Joe Montana (Super Bowl though was played in 82) and Larry Bird (Celtics rallied from 3-1 deficit to 76ers in 1981 East Finals and later beat a sub-.500 Houston Rockets in Finals). The NY Islanders were amidst their 1980's four-peat, which should be remembered more. I even remember Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia as the last remaining big star of the NY Cosmos after Pele and Beckenbauer retired years earlier, though they lost the championship.
John McEnroe finally beat Bjorn Borg in Wimbledon after Borg had won 5 straight. Then Borg again lost the US Open to McEnroe and just like that, Borg retired even though he was still pretty young.
"Hill Street Blues" was compelling TV drama.
Assassination attempts. Return of real tense US-USSR relations as Pres. Reagan really stuck it up to Soviets
I was 15
Thank you Johnn yboy!
And thank you too Shelly !!!!!
I was only a baby in the summer of '81. Early July to be exact...

I attended a 'sneak preview' of that first 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' film......& remember the theater was so packed, that I ended up in the front row.....in the only remaining seat available.....on the far right end of the row. My neck was killin' me for a couple of days after that.

Hey T.P. ! Many thanks for watching. That was Mantegna ??? There's a testament to great acting lolol. There have been so many shows that ticked me off after they were cancelled... this was one of them. That kid who played their son had me in hysterics.
