"They should've thrown more money at it" is a response I see whenever something like this happens and its mind numbing. If I told you to write a 50 page term paper due by the end of the day, I'd expect something incomplete and terrible. Offering you a million dollars to do it won't change much.

The issue is a lot of people don’t understand the process and how much time stuff like this takes, especially fur! I mean, look at the sonic film fiasco and the insight into the process of creating such character. Sure, they don’t have to develop a character from scratch in this case, but I imagine the creation of fur is the same along with the pain staking process of trying to make it move naturally with the actor or character. As she said in her video, cgi animation takes years! It’s painstaking and grueling! There’s so much fine detail that needs attention and if it’s not given the proper time, it’s gonna be a disaster. I was gonna go to school for animation but decided against it. It’s considerably stressful if you don’t have an inane lvl of passion for it. And these situations just make it worse. It’s hard not to feel disappointed of a project that wasn’t given the proper respect. Even if the film had turned out bad, if there’s one thing you hope for, it’s that the film was at least beautiful to look at. I doubt half of these people will be properly paid because of how hard this bombed.
Actually if you look up reviews from cgi artists the cgi is *technically* very well done and the design is what’s giving you that unsettling, uncanny valley feeling. The digital art was successfully portraying a terrible design unfortunately.

Which makes me think it's funny you mentioned she does different in The hustle, cuz she produced that one. Also she most definitely wasn't fat Amy when she was in Super Fun Night and that Netflix movie, Isn't it romantic. I do like her, even though her range is limited
I feel really bad for the CG artists who worked on this film. They have to have known that it wouldn’t look good, but 7 months just isn’t enough time to fix it.

I've a friend who watches all the Transformers films and I'm trying to wean him off them. I feel like a Disney direct adaptation of his work would probs be a bit messy, but this musical can totally translate beautifully into animation being an adaptation of a successful adaptation in a way. Hell, Steven Spielberg was working on one up until this Amblimation studio went under. Look it up on Google, the concept art is amazing!

I feel the most sorry for the dancers. They could’ve had a chance to get more work but instead they’re stuck in a movie that people will be making fun of forever.
what's worse is that the audience can't even enjoy the dancing due to the multiple angle cuts during the dance sequences. So, not only did the dancers partake in a horrible movie, they couldn't even showcase their dancing correctly...

The whole pre-production to post-production of Cats is just a fever dream. How did anyone think this would do well? Everyone says how difficult it is to get anything made in Hollywood, how was this green lit? How could they have thought this would be Oscar-bait? The mind boggles. The only good thing to come out of Cats are the hilarious reviews, outrage and confusion.
It's a highly successful stage musical, so they probably thought they could replicate its West End success on screen. Either that or it's a monstrously large money laundering operation, along the lines of "the Producers" which is meant to flop.
@TheHNTRS Its the original plot, even the young cats want to go to heaviside layer, makes no sense at all. the play has maybe a worse ending, Grizabella just walks up some stairs in the back to get to heaviside layer. the play was most popular for the choreography and costuming, and the choreography is edited with jump cuts all over the place which makes it hard to watch, they don't move like cats, its are jerk movements that don't look remotely catlike, you think sleek and stalking when you think of cats, not whatever this was. the costuming relies on cgi so they messed that up too. Andrew Lloyd Webber's stuff with TIm Rice is much better musically, Tim Rice didn't work on Cats, you know Tim Rice because he did music for Aladdin and Lion King, and this is not that.

Saw the live show on Broadway in high school. I just remember them ugly human cats walking around the very dark theater, climbing on chairs close to the audience and popping up out of nowhere, dancing in our faces. It was weird and scary.

I have never seen a movie that so universally united all critics in thinking that they had just been slipped acid before watching a movie. I mean some of the highest profile critics said the most hilarious things about this movie. If anything, maybe people will see it just so that they can get a t-shirt that said "I survived the theatrical release of Cats". On a more technical note, I don't know why so many people are surprised. Tom Hooper is a HORRIBLE director known for terrible camera work and shot choice. Even watching King's Speech you can see it, but it is more obvious in Les Mis. Overuse of close ups, dutch angles, constantly breaks the 180, and just leaves so much empty space in scenes. I may go see it, but only when I'm back in Cali so I can take an edible first.
@@cherubicnerd A dutch angle is just a fancy shmancy term for a camera tilt haha. The guy uses them ALL THE TIME. They're supposed to give you a sense of disorientation. Which, you know, is effective if you use them sparingly. Hooper does them during musical numbers (and I bet he does them during the dance numbers in Cats) and you're just like...okay? Oh and he also does close ups at weird angles. In the King's Speech he does them over the top of people's heads? I mean--its one thing if you do it in a movie that should be disorienting like a thriller, but a musical? I feel bad for the guy. I've heard he's pretty nice.
I loved King's Speech because of the focus on stutters and getting past them but now I really want to go back and look at the movie again with a critical eye.

creative person I think post Malone makes some feel good songs. His music isn’t groundbreaking and doesn’t have meaning that changes my life, but some of his songs make me feel good. I know his stuff might not be for everyone tho

The fur coats - In the stage-version, Grizabella's costume includes a ratty fur coat, tattered sparkly dress, sparkly stockings, and silver high-heels. She's the only cat that wears heels or a fur coat.

lunairerose thats a really good point. i actually recommend watching it ahjsjs i went with three friends and it was such a unique experience. having people to laugh with made it a lot better but we were SO creeped out most of the time. we were even keeping count of how many people left in the middle of the movie and honestly,,, yikes.

Saw the live show on Broadway in high school. I just remember them ugly human cats walking around the very dark theater, climbing on chairs close to the audience and popping up out of nowhere, dancing in our faces. It was weird and scary.

This movie summed up by everyone: chair...but make it electric
I have never seen a movie that so universally united all critics in thinking that they had just been slipped acid before watching a movie. I mean some of the highest profile critics said the most hilarious things about this movie. If anything, maybe people will see it just so that they can get a t-shirt that said "I survived the theatrical release of Cats".
On a more technical note, I don't know why so many people are surprised. Tom Hooper is a HORRIBLE director known for terrible camera work and shot choice. Even watching King's Speech you can see it, but it is more obvious in Les Mis. Overuse of close ups, dutch angles, constantly breaks the 180, and just leaves so much empty space in scenes.
I may go see it, but only when I'm back in Cali so I can take an edible first.

@@cherubicnerd A dutch angle is just a fancy shmancy term for a camera tilt haha. The guy uses them ALL THE TIME. They're supposed to give you a sense of disorientation. Which, you know, is effective if you use them sparingly. Hooper does them during musical numbers (and I bet he does them during the dance numbers in Cats) and you're just like...okay? Oh and he also does close ups at weird angles. In the King's Speech he does them over the top of people's heads? I mean--its one thing if you do it in a movie that should be disorienting like a thriller, but a musical? I feel bad for the guy. I've heard he's pretty nice.
I loved King's Speech because of the focus on stutters and getting past them but now I really want to go back and look at the movie again with a critical eye.
@@orifox1629 Oh for sure! Those two actors are amazing and the script was stellar. If you go back check out those empty spaces when they're sitting in the chairs. Its so odd. The close ups. The eye-level. But I agree it is a great movie despite all that! I am in film school so basically any movie can be ruined for me. =(

Honestly, I wanna know what she thinks about Richard Linklater wanting to direct the film adaptation of Merrily, but with the twist that he's going to (or has already started) start filming it, and it's going to be like Boyhood, and follow the actors playing Mary, Frank, and Charley over the course of 20 years in real time to make it authentic to the show. (Even though the actors cast are almost in their thirties, and the beginning/ending of the show has them as college graduates.)
creative person I think post Malone makes some feel good songs. His music isn’t groundbreaking and doesn’t have meaning that changes my life, but some of his songs make me feel good. I know his stuff might not be for everyone tho

I see a few people who want to go “hatewatch” it but really go watch something else that has better reviews. Hollywood doesn’t care about your “ironic/hate” money, they’ll declare it a success if they get the required money back and we might get a sequel or whatever. Give those $15 to some better cause.

This'll help explain some of the things in "Cats":
Jellicle - According to T.S. Eliot, "jellicle" is a small child's mispronunciation of "dear little".
Lack of a plot - The original stage-version has almost no plot. It's a series of divertissements (diversions), to use the ballet term. Like the second half of "The Nutcracker" and the final Act of "Sleeping Beauty", it's just a series of party-pieces, purely for entertainment, that does nothing to advance the story.
Jennyanydots - There aren't any fat-jokes in the original stage version. Jennyanydots strips off her big outer costume, to reveal a fringed catsuit for the tapdance part of her number.
The fur coats - In the stage-version, Grizabella's costume includes a ratty fur coat, tattered sparkly dress, sparkly stockings, and silver high-heels. She's the only cat that wears heels or a fur coat.
just wanna say...in the original musical there are no fat characters that are the butt of fat jokes...if that's in the movie it's ONLY in the movie :/
You're right. In the stage play Jennyanydots and Bustopher Jones are well respected and admired by the tribe. The 2019 movie did these characters dirty.

Cats was always a favorite play growing up. I saw it again recently as a adult and I realized the play has no plot really. This works as a play because of the dancing and songs but as a movie... nope
