    We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version czcams.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

    This lock worked for years with only battery replacement required. Suddenly the outside thumb knob would spin and not activate the deadbolt after I entered the code. I checked CZcams and your video was the first offered. My issue has been solved. The only difference I found was that there was no very fine pin inside the center gray piece. Nonetheless, I repositioned the small screw with the spring and that was the culprit. Thank you for making this video.

      Wondering what is this "very fine pin". Without that pin if it is the tang I am thinking about, it couldn't possibly work. Or I don't understand.

    ***Short Cut*** The piece that was out of alignment can be manipulated from the back without taking the lock apart on some models. Directly above the tailpiece (rod that goes thru the door) there is a hole, inside there is a slotted piece that attaches to the back of the misaligned piece. Use a standard screw driver to turn the piece to the proper alignment BTW Thanks MIkkyday, I found this by following your instructions. it fixed my problem.

    This was a deliberate design by Schlage. If you read the instructions you'll notice that this feature (the offending part) was designed so that you can disable the passcode and render the lock a typical deadbolt that can only be opened with a key. If you look on the other side of the lock, at the back of the offending piece, you'll notice that Schlage made it so you can turn "on" and "off" this feature using a flat head screwdriver. They probably should not have added this feature if it was going to cause so much confusion.

    Here it is 3yrs later, and I knew right where to go !
    Had this sort of prob occur with a different Schlage lock and once again found your posting invaluable. Just worth note-ing: on this current lock set, the interior screws have a STAR type security head and, in addition, the STAR heads are 2 different sizes (with the two screws underneath the lock knob being a slightly smaller size than the others). The bit sizes you'll need are widely available, just be forewarned, depending on manuf date (I assume?) you will probably need something else besides a Phillips screw driver. Thanks again, Mikkyday

    thanks for the video!!! I was having a whale of a time trying to figure this thing out but quickly realized that I had to take off the inner plate with the torx t10 screws. After opening that up and fiddling with it, I realized that my solenoid wasn't moving the gray piece up high enough to push the pin in far enough to catch the locking mechanism. After moving the spring up and down on the gray piece to no avail, I shot the entire system with a good coating of WD-40. I plugged everything back together and plugged in my code 5-10 times and everything started working perfectly. If anyone else is having the problem of the gray piece not going up far enough, hit it with WD-40 and actuate the solenoid to coat the internal parts. Worth a shot! Thank You!!!

    Great video - my problem was not this it was related to the springs inside- the large spring on the right side needed to be stretched, also took the spring off the little bolt on the mechanical park at stretched it out and put in back in and re applied the gray plastic part on top of the large spring.
    Now works better than ever. This video helped be take apart the device on a -15 f day... figured it out in 2 hrs... good luck all

    • @KLondike5
      @KLondike5 Před rokem

      You didn't need to stretch it. It bunches up over time because the solenoid rotates it left and right and uses it as a coil. There's a slight error that builds up over time until it's too bunched up to rotate effectively anymore. All anyone has to do is lift the tray up a little bit until you see the spring relaxed to its original position and set the tray back down again.

    You can actually engage this with the lockout screw on the back(inside part of the door lock, after removing the casing that holds the deadbolt lock handle), without taking the lock off of the door. If you have it engaged(screw turned up and down), it keeps anyone from using a key to open the lock.
    I had this same issue when I pulled it apart to find my master code.
    If you can lock the lock with the code on the keypad and then press the Schlage button, it should allow you to unlock the door without entering a code. If so, this means the lock is installed improperly(the lock and leave feature is operating backwards).
    With the lock installed on the door, make sure the deadbolt is not extended(should be unlocked, handle turned to the left, away from the door frame, towards the interior of the door), remove the panel that holds the lock handle that you would use to lock your deadbolt from the inside of your home.
    Then remove the plate that holds the battery(two gold bolts). There is a metal bar extending through this plate and feeds into the lock handle.
    The hole where this bar comes through is oblong. Make sure this is turned down against the metal plate spring(vertical) and reinstall. This will reverse the auto lock mechanism.
    Sorry. I'm not doing a video. I hope this is explanation enough. If not, I will reply on here.

    Actually the piece you're pointing at (2:05) is the Vacation Mode lock. You can turn it off and on with a flathead screwdriver from the other side, with no need to take the lock apart. Check the programming guide on the Schlage site.
    But.. Thanks so much for the video anyway. Watching you take it apart convinced me to just take mine apart and I fixed it. It seems the spring on the right side gets out of place which will also keep the assembly from working properly.

    Mine's been trouble free for 5 and a half years. Then nothing worked. New battery tried. Couldn't hear any movement within. This vid helped me disassemble it. The pin and everything were ok but the small motor that spins the spring to move the grey piece to engage or disengage the bolt worked intermittently. I fiddled with it, bent the spring a few times and when it worked 10 times in a row I reassembled and reinstalled. Working for now.
    I can see a motor like that giving it up after this long. My soldering sucks so I likely can't replace it even if I had the right one.
    I paid $160Cdn for it new but Lowes has it for $104Cdn now.
    I would likely buy a new one if this becomes unreliable - I really have liked this lock and it's handy for not only me but for houseguests and others to not need a key for coming and going.

    This is not the problem with most. Mine started not working randomly. I took mine apart like this guy and found that the solenoid would not push the pin up enough to engage the cam. I adjusted mechanism as described in other comments which puts less spring counter tension on the solenoid. Worked a time or two then same problem. I would suggest not to buy. These locks are made more cheaply than they used to. I have four on my house, the newest one, about 2 years old, took a dump. Same problem as most here. Dial spins and does not unlock. As said, I tried what has been suggested in the comments. Didn't work but for a time or two. Bought a NEW ONE. Checked it out before installing. Did not work out of the box. In addition, only had one key whereas the old ones had two. New Battery? Didn't make any difference. The other three I have, the oldest being around 7 years old, continue to work fine. Schlage has Cheaped Out.

    thanks for the video, well captured and communicated. I was having a zero function issue, which left to just use the key for locking and unlocking. I disassembled my Schlage and it did not show any signs of failed alignment of any kind. Poor quality parts and springs are likely the bottom line issue. Ibought another one and it was non serviceable right out of the box. I am done with the Schlage gear. For the price you pay for this lock, you shouldn't have to endure the nonsense problems that appear to be the same for almost everyone one here from their comments. Such a let down for a basic security need.

    • @wingerrrrrrrrr
      @wingerrrrrrrrr Před 4 lety

      I had mine for well over 5 years with no problems, and only recently my issue was that it sometimes wasn't disengaging the lock properly when locking up, so if I didn't check it and jiggle it a bit to check that it released, it could be unlocked by turning the knob without entering a code. I figured it must be something that could be adjusted, but didn't try opening it yet. Video is very helpful, should be able to fix it easily enough, probably the release spring needs a bit of stretching.
      This failure is better than the one where it won't open though, causing a lock out.

    The lock was in “lock out” mode. Of you look on the back of the inside mount plate you will see a small screw head. With the words “lock out” next to it. The diagram shows vertical position of the screw head is lockout and horizontal is unlock. You don’t have to disassemble the unit to change the setting.

      @doughutchison7900 Před 4 lety

      sky pallman Sky .. I never said your method wouldn’t fix it .. of course it will. My point was there’s no need to disassemble first when a turn of a screw head can (labeled “lock out) is an easier first step. I hear the complaint on that model often as I am a locksmith. It’s not uncommon for the lock out cam to come out of the box engaged, but of you want to take it apart first .. feel free. Stay safe.

    • @DeeDee-me8mt
      @DeeDee-me8mt Před 4 lety

      That seems right - 'Lockout mode' or 'vacation mode' is to disable the functioning of the keypad-mechanism while you are out on vacation - so it only works with a physical key until you set it back on. There is indeed a small screw head if you look closely after you remove the home-side outer plate. Try to turn it gently otherwise the screw head will break. Even if it does, you can always make the full fledged fix as so well described in the video.

    • @sth128
      @sth128 Před 3 lety

      Doug Hutchison I believe you are correct. I just installed this exact model and I was wondering what does the lock out mode do. If the lock problem was as demonstrated by the video then yeah the easier fix would be just to take off the inside plate and rotate the screw (instead of complete disassembly).
      Gotta admit it took me a few seconds to realise it's a manual deadbolt (as in you rotate the lever manually to unlock). Thought I fucked up the installation or had a faulty unit haha. Not my proudest moment (but then it's my first lock installation so I'm gonna use that as an excuse).
      Good video to show the internal workings though, always good to know.

    3 months after installing the lock I finally got locked out of my house today. The pin was not engaging enough and grabbing the lock. after several tries and beating on the darn thing, I guess I freed something up and I was able to unlock it. Once it was apart, I tinkered with the long solenoid spring and found if I moved the plastic part up one swirl on the spring the lock then worked much better. I am guessing I had a weak spring to start with. It's not 100% like it was 3 months ago, but it sure beats paying another $100 for another one. I also wonder if its that little spring on the lock pin that is binding everything up. Before you ask, yes, I have a good battery. Thank you Mikkyday for the video.

    Wish we could include photos with comments; it would help clarify. The half of the lock on the inside of the door has words inscribed (above the orange plastic piece) that say "LOCK OVERRIDE" "NORMAL" "LOCKOUT". And there is a hole into which a screwdriver can be inserted to rotate a short bolt 90 degrees. This can be used to place the lock in "LOCKOUT" mode, which coincides with the problem shown in the very helpful video. Perhaps others finding this post could try turning the short bolt to "LOCKOUT" then back to "NORMAL" to see if that fixes the problem. Simpler than messing with the 6 screws.

    The piece that was not in the right place is not the problem. Author of video might have moved the piece while taking apart. The problem is the long spring under the horseshoe piece or the solenoid is dying of fatigue. My lock is not engaging (when enter code) since cold weather started. I thought it was the battery, changed it and lock still not working. The parts or the design are bad. If you take the horseshoe piece out and "adjust" the long spring underneath, the problem is fixed for a day or two, after which it comes back...

    I had 3 units that over time started to intermittently spin without unlocking the deadbolt, with each getting worse over time. The "vacation mode" was not the problem. I got one replaced, but that started spinning too after a few months, so I wanted to find the real problem.
    On the right side, under the large C-shaped gray plastic piece, is a spring that functions sort of as a worm gear to move the gray piece up and down. In my case, the motor that spins that spring/worm gear simply wasn't performing enough rotations to pull the gray piece all the way upward, so the brass pin would not rise far enough to engage the deadbolt gear.
    The solution (so far!) was to lift off the gray piece, and lubricate the spring (and the underside of the plastic that contacts the spring) with some dry lube. That immediately allowed the motor spin more freely, which allows it to do enough rotations to pull the gray piece tightly to the top. Apparently there was enough corrosion/gunk on that spring/plastic interface that the motor had difficulty overcoming. Prior to that, I had taken the lock apart a couple other times, and lubricated various other things, but nothing really worked until I did the spring. They've all been working perfectly for a month now, and hopefully they continue to!
    Even though this video has nothing to do with my problem, it was valuable to me to see the disassembly of the lock (which in his case, was completely unnecessary!) Hopefully this can help someone else whose problem is similar to mine.

    • @KLondike5
      @KLondike5 Před rokem +1

      You're right about the source of the problem but it's a much simpler explanation. Since it is using the spring as a coil there's just a slight error that builds up over time so it's turning more in one direction than the other when it's engaging and disengaging. This causes the spring to bunch up underneath that plastic piece. The only thing anyone has to do is lift the plastic piece until the spring pops to full length and then drop the plastic piece into place once again when the plastic piece is fully in the down position. There's a little nub in the plastic piece below the solenoid that sits in the coils of the spring. Once that coil bunches up over time, the nub has nowhere to go anymore. It's just stuck in the down position due to the spring bunching.

    I think it all has to do with the solenoid spring. When I bought mine the guy at the home box store rekeyed it for me. He took it all apart, including the cover for the solenoid spring. He just slapped it back together. The lock didn't work but only a few times. I took it apart and fiddled with the solenoid spring, I pushed it up and dropped the gray cover over it. I left the pin and spring in the center. I tried the lock about 20 times after reinstalling it and it is fine. It's a shame we have to spend this much time jacking with a new product. I had one of these for years and we never used it because it didn't work. I also had the door knob style of keyless entry for many years on a storage room in basement and loved it. I got suckered into this one for a new house on the garage.

    Update. I had the same issue with 2 of these deadbolts. One on an indoor door and one on an outdoor door so the cold weather theory may not be completely accurate. I had Schlage send me replacements and the same issue again. My fix was to shim the the gap between the plastic slider and the housing it seats against so that the pin sits flush or more flush with the sleeve it rides inside of. One lock needed a felt disc of a certain thickness and the other needed a plastic washer that was a little bit thicker. Both were cut with a scissors to size. You could use a dab of glue but the cover plate should keep everything in place. I'm pretty sure this is the only solution as the solenoid motor in conjunction with the spring acting as a screw is not a very precise piece of engineering in that even if you reset the plastic slide over the spring it will eventually find its way back to the problem position. The other possibility is that the motor just is underpowered or looses power over time or the spring looses memory. Anyway, shimming the slide where it seats was my solution for both. They work perfectly again

    I had a similar problem with my lock. In my situation it was that small bolt and spring that had old lubricant and dirt on it so as to prevent it from retracting when the plastic collar tried to move up. I just cleaned up the bolt, reinserted it and the small spring and now the deadbolt works perfect.

    I'm sure this has been mentioned below, but this is the "lock override" or "lockout" mode. You do not have to disassemble the lock this much. 1. Take the back off the lock as if you are going to change the battery. 2. Look for the word "lockout" below the battery. 3. Use a flathead screwdriver in the hole to turn off "lock override".
    This procedure is on page 7 of the Schlage "Keypad Locks" user guide.

    Thx for the video. As you took front mechanism apart I realized there is a manual override slot that is accessible by removing indoor battery cover. This slot appears to control the little “switch” that can interfere with pin operation you pointed out. I turned manual override to vertical and then back to horizontal and i could immediately notice the pin solidly engaging each time. It’s possible someone else pointed this out, sry if I missed it. Thanks again!

    Great video! This didn't end up fixing it but it was helpful taking a look inside. What fixed it for me was replacing the generic 9 volt battery I had with a brand-name one. • @brucealder587

    The "Vacation Lock" was not the issue with my lock (see Joe Hobson's comment below), but the issue was that when I entered the code (as done in the video) it wouldn't pull 'up' enough on the small black peg with spring (what he put back in at 1.42 in the video) to ensure it would engage with the gear. I tried adjusting the big spring on the right (preloaded in compression and tension) and nothing seemed to work. Eventually I just took out the small spring on the small black peg and it worked perfectly. The small black peg didn't need the spring because gravity pulls it out every time (I lubricated it just to make sure). It may be that the small electric motor has become too weak to overcome the pressure of the small spring (the lock is 5+ years old) but now I've at least extended the life. It's working perfectly now...

      Thanks! I bought mine at an auction and had the same issue, so I figured I was out money, but after taking it apart and removing the spring from the pin, and spray oiling things up a little, it works perfectly now. You have to wait a sec for the pin to gravity drop, but other than that, it works. The spring, when compressed, is still too thick to allow the pin to engage all the way. Also, put some spray lube on the spring that turns to engage and disengage the plastic pin pushing part so it moves easier.

    Works for a BE375 even though screws are a bit different. The only difference is there is a plastic piece in the barrel that you must remove that hides the last screw. There is a plastic piece that insets into the metal, pry that open and the plastic piece will pop out revealing the screw. The screw that acts like a pin with a spring malfunctioned -- the spring had released above the head of a screw. A two hundred dollar lock malfunctioning over a cheap spring...tisk, tisk, tisk. Once I reset spring in small cam and closed it up, the lock worked. Glad I didn't spend money on this lock as it came with the house. When the first unit malfunctioned, Shlage sent out another one without hesitation. Worked for about a year then it malfunctioned. I fixed the original and will have to fix the replacement.

    If you take the inside cover off, where the battery is located, there is a hole that shows a screw sideways or up and down, this is the override. You didn"t have to take the outside cover off. You simply turn the screw which turns that part you were talking about. The problem I have is that sometimes my mechanism does not disengage and you can unlock the deadbolt without using the code. Maybe it needs a cleaning and oiling perhaps?

That's weak I thought, poops a new battery in, and hey presto, it works. Old battery has enough juice to light it up, but not enough to operate solenoid.
