  • Fiji Vlog#5. On 10th October 2020, Fiji celebrated 50 years of Independence. It had previously been a British colony from 10th October 1874 until 10th October 1970. The main event for the celebration was a military parade at Albert Park in the Fijian capital, Suva. Join me as I soak up the pomp and pageantry. You may or may not get a full sense of the atmosphere of being there but you'll come close!

    Thank you so much for these videos , I remember our ship leaving Suva Harbour Fiji in 1974 when the final handing over was completed and we had to leave ( my late dads job was working with the UN teaching Fijians to build roads ) , I remember as a young child crying as I had to leave my friends and a wonderful Fijian lady who looked after me and my sister - she taught us so much and my view of the world was nurtured by her ❤️ A little piece of my heart still belongs to Fiji .

      You must have some amazing memories. I have a few more vlogs on my channel covering other aspects of Fiji's independence you might like to see. I hope to cover it again this October - all being well given the current crisis the country is going through with the Delta strain of Covid. In fact, if it wasn't for the Delta strain I would have covered a whole host of other stories by now.

    i was not quite 2yrs old, but I have recollections of sitting on the ground at Albert Park waiting for parachuters to land...on actual independence day in 1970.
    that's a new stadium on the Thurston Gardens side?
    btw, the Police marching band has always been my favourite.

      Hi Jes. That "new" stadium on the Thurston Garden end is actually the old one which was at the Government Building end until it was relocated to the other side and upgraded.

    This is very cool. Also I noticed, despite having been a republic since 1987, they still have "E II R" emblems on many of the military uniforms, I wonder if these too will be updated to "C III R""?

    • @ThePaleBlueDot
      @ThePaleBlueDot  Před rokem

      Interesting point. I did ask the guy about why he still wore the Royal insignia despite Fiji being a republic. He gave me an answer that unfortunately I didn't fully grasp but it seemed to revolve around the fact that he, as bandmaster, still owed allegiance to the Queen. Maybe I got it wrong. Whether it will be upgraded to o "C III R" is a further interesting point. :)

      Cheers, Ed. Lots more to come. It's impossible to vlog at the moment with the Delta variant of Covid-19 so widespread. Everywhere is closed off. But I hope to get going again soon.

      There hasn't been a Hibiscus festival for a number of years due to disputes within the SCC and Covid. I don't think there'll be one this year. Very sad.
