Along with fuel, spoon, and beverages etc. one drawback is I have to carry water in a separate container. So for short outings it’s a little bulky, your video has given me a fresh idea. All people who say alcohol is somehow dangerous as a trekking fuel. What amount one puts in a burner is just minimal. I am certainly against burners like Toaks siphon used with a "chicken wire" net circle, or those fancee feast stoves without any proper stand.
    The Evernew burner or its copies, is a much more solid, and it won't tip easy. Before that happens the pot will tip from the stove.
    Paul did make a "mistake" though in that he chose to cook something in such a small mug. When something starts to boil and steam, it can be a touch and go grabbing a mug with such handles with a pot grabber. And the Evernew burner/copy can develop from the upper holes in my experience some sticky stuff between the pot and burner contact.
    Anyways the amount if spilled would have not been a lot and otherwise a very nice video Paul. I liked it thank you :)
    I myself have a Toaks 118mm bowl, 550ml, that I'm considering also using with my chinese Evernew copy burner. It would not be used to cook any, just to boil water. Just measure something like 15 ml of fuel inside, and if needed let it burn through before any pot removing and stuff. Certainly not playing with the steam if the windscreen prevents easy removal.

  • @simonh6371
    @simonh6371 Před 4 lety +1

    Okay since you asked Paul, my brewkit is not really lightweight but it's reliable, efficient and bombproof:
    - Dutch Army stainless steel canteen cup & 1l water bottle, nested; I have ordered a canteen cup lid but still use my old solution which is inner pan from a German Army mess kit, it's aluminium but as well as being used as a lid I can cook in it too, or boil water if cooking in the canteen cup. Think when the canteen cup lid comes I'm still going to carry the German mess kit pan.
    - Trangia burner - as used by Swedish Army
    - Folding Swedish cup (green of course) also as used by Swedish Army
    - Stainless folding spork
    - Lixada pocket stove as windshield / pot stand, plus I can burn twigs in it if I run out of meths, or just prefer to do so
    - Victorinox camper knife
    - Small firesteel to light Trangia, I always carry a lighter too but as I'm more prepper/bushcraft/survival orientated I go by the adage ''one is none, two are one''
    All in a British Army S10 respirator case, which I attach to the handlebars of my mountain bike, there's loads of room to spare, so I pack my Bundeswehr Flecktarn goretex and/or poncho. Always carry some paracord too, so the 5 C's (container, combustion, cordage, cutting tool & cover) are covered.
    It isn't light but most of the stuff is made in countries like UK, Germany, NL, Switzerland, Sweden so it's good quality; it's tried and tested old-school kit, and it's virtually indestructible.

    I was one told buy an ex fireman that when testing the stove you should use that back of your hand. This is because your natural instinct is to for some reason is to close your hand and if you you use then back of your hand you will close it away from the flame instead of into it. Something I found useful 😀

    If you want to use the Evernew stove with a windshield/ burner stand designed for the Trangia you need to add a little ring around the stove: it is just fractionally narrower than the Trangia and can slip if you’re not careful. I use a ring made from rolled up foil.

    Brilliant Paul, I’v never thought of just putting my pot in my pocket, I’v always just brought a small bag, that way I put some more clothes and stuff in etc. My cook kit consists of a pocket rocket 2, My ti 650, GSI pot grippers. And if I need it, the Trangia frying pan. 👍🏻 I only really boil water though, ( saves washing up ) 👍🏻

    Nice video. I love seeing minimalist Hiking kit. I also use a 350ml cup, but the stove is and have an MBDC Gnome Turbo stove. I can fit the stove with pot stand inside a 10oz insulated mug and both fit in the 350ml mug. I had not considered adding the pot stand but will have to.

    I've just got a 550ml titanium pot and that fits a BRS-3000 type stove and a gas canister. I know it's uncouth but it does boil quickly. Came with a stuff sack that fits a collapsible mug on top. I do like the 'stuff sock' idea though. :-)

    Neat wee brew kit. I use a 450ml pot containing a Trangia, wire pot stand, lighter, pot scrubber and piece of soldering mat. For camping this fits inside a 750ml pot and that then goes into an Ikea stove. Food is carried in an old Vango hard anodised alum. mess tin (why they stopped making them I don't know) which has a lid and that serves as another pot/frying pan/plate. My pots were made in China for a guy called Tomshoo who obviously over ordered. ATB

    One of my (Retro) Brew Kits .. have quite a few variations thereof 😊.
    * Esbit Folding Military Stove. I use Alcohol Fuel Gel stored in a little Plastic Medicine Bottle. Here in Switzerland, easier to source and cheaper than Esbit Tabs. Gel Burners are a set of 3 Metal Screw Top Jar Lids. Each stores inside the other and gives me different levels of Heat. Together with 'esatz' wind shields and other odds and sods, the lot fits very nicely into a Webbing Military Compass Pouch.
    * Swiss Military M84 Water Bottle with Aluminium Cup. I fashioned a Lid out of a Herring Tin Bottom and a Carrier from Nylon Strapping.
    * Flame Source .. Bic / Matches / Fire Steel / Whatever.
    This Set using the Gel Fuel is very unobtrusive and safe to use .. almost anywhere .. rural and urban.
    I have also, with a little IKEA Egg Pan, an additional folding wire Pot Stand and Dixies acting as a 'Bain Marie' to keep the already cooked Scoff warm, used the above-mentioned to cook up a Full English Breakfast.
    Take care .. stay safe ..

    I always drink water when out on a day trail but it's a nice idea to have a cup of soup or something on a long trail, I usually just have sandwich or snacks but it's a cool idea I'll have to try. I do use my car stove kit pretty often, especially when driving in states like Nevada/Oregon there are almost no business for many hours and everything is closed at night in small downs, even many of the fuel stations. Thankfully rest stops usually have a drink/food machines and last year in August I was driving alone on route 95 and started to feel really bad and an upset stomach so I stopped at a rest stop, thankfully they had an instant cup of noodles from the machine and had a stove kit as there is no hot water available. I had a rest for 2 hours and was fine to keep going. Just couldn't bare going in to the bathrooms, the toilets just drop in to holes in the ground so the smell is unbelievable especially when you are already feeling sick, should add a gas mask to the car kit heh.

    The Trangia has the advantage. The simmer ring allows you to heat up a can of chili in your cup without burning the beans on the bottom. Been backpacking for 45 years and take cans of chili and corned beef hash. The water is already in it. Less time and fuel to heat up. Saves your drinking water. Your still going to pack the same weight other than the flattened can in a baggy that weighs nothing. Ten times less than a fancy freeze dried meal.

    Try a small ferro rod and make a capillary type soda can stove. You'll cut down on the weight and save a lot of money, plus it cooks much faster than either of your store bought stoves. Also put your pasta meal into your sock as a pot cosy to allow it to rehydrate without significant heat loss. Love the overall set up, and I'm going to get one of those smaller cups like yours.

    • @joelrampersad1359
      @joelrampersad1359 Před 2 lety

      Hey Ryan, it blooms faster because it has less thermal mass (thin aluminium versus thick brass) and it burns hotter because of the capillary system wicking the alcohol into the hot chamber wall before combustion.

    I wonder if you need some air holes (more oxygen) at the bottom of the wind shield for your stove to breath better - hotter - quicker boil.
    Or cut a flap door at bottom (leave hinge) so can adjust air intake from fully open to fully closed.
