I like Affinity much better than I ever did Illustrator, and I used Illustrator off and on for over a decade. I never liked using Illustrator. I liked Photoshop, but not Illustrator. But Affinity I picked up really quickly. I canceled my Adobe membership over a year ago and havenât looked back once.
totally agree, before affinity I used a lot photoshop back 2016, and my experience about Affinity was easy to learn because the Photoshop is so similar to Affinity than Illustrator
thanks for share your experience with us!
Yes!! Affinity Designer is very friendly user to use, even to zoom and move the image with your mouse is so simple. I hope they will integrate something interesting like smart selection with AI like photoshop 2021.
Do u have yo portfolio in behance or somewhere ?
I think what made affinity win it for me is the one time purchase and at the time available on iPad as thatâs all I had...
indeed, I started to use affinity on ipad since the first release, it's a great piece of software to make drawings and illustration, mainly because of the time purchase as well
for suređ
I prefer Affinity also. Itâs loaded though very intuitive. The iPad app is also great. Sometime you forget that youâre working on a tablet and not a computer.
I enjoy same like you as well.
Iâm using Affinity all the three products and they are all sync in Affinity publisher so smoothly. Not just the Aff designer thatâs awesome. Their products just not tied to subscription too. I bought five licenses which including 3 softwares per seat and still a lot cheaper. Lovin it.đ
Indeed, I have all of them as well, I'm looking forward to have the version on ipad for Affinity publisher
I only recently bought affinity, and I already love it so much that I'm totally ready to give up illustrator. A month ago, I would have scoffed if someone told me something came close to illustrator capability (let alone cost less).
Image trace, offset path, and the shape builder are really the main drawbacks, but not showstoppers - won't be long till these are developed I'm sure!
They have added Offset path in the last update.
I'm an Adobe AI user and wanted to switch soon, your comparison is helpful to complete my decision! Thank you for sharing!
Affinity on Ipad is the best thing foerever, greetings from MĂ©xico
I have to agree with u haha
I used both Illustrator and Affinity. Though I am still learning all the Affinity`s fratures, I must say it`s very very easy to understand. I am achieving a better result from Affinity. It`s just my favorite one, for sure. And the bonus of not having to pay a subscription it`s even better, mainly because I am still a beginner and paying a subscription just for learning, it`s such a pressure!
Yees I feel the same when I started, thanks for sharing your experience Lucy!
When you're learning is probably one of the best reasons to have a subscription model. Think about it. If you needed to learn a piece of software that costs $1000.00 (That's what Photoshop Extended cost before the subscription), you could pay $10.00 per month while learning it, or $1000.00 up front. You might decide after a month that you don't want to pursue this software any further but now you've paid $1000.00. With the subscription, you would have paid 10 dollars. I'm not defending the subscription. I don't like it either, but I am paying $50.00 per month for a piece of software that I am learning, and I was paying $100.00 per month for another one that I eventually decided to no longer pursue.
@@KuttyJoe you can try affinity for 2 weeks.that's plenty enough time to know if the lifetime value of $50 is worth it to compare to a leased product which you wont be able to use once you stopped being a subscriber.
@@Gogies777 Are you comparing two equal products? If not, then the comparison is flawed. If the products are equal then the choice would be very easy. Buy the cheaper product and save your money.
@@KuttyJoe the premise of your argument is flawed not the comparison i made. They are both used for what again?if one particular project or a job can be achieved by either of the competing products( granted that you are fully aware that they CAN'T be both perfectly the same in features and price points) then what made them so different?the OP is a proof when she said she can get things done much better in designer than ai.
Thank you for sharing a video worth watching. Every other video on Affinity was all people talking and not showing the actual application of the software.
Nice video Jhonatan!
Thanks!
I used to use Affinity, but then switched to Illustrator. The shape builder is make or break for me. If AD added it, I'd be happy to take another look at them. They also need to add plug-in support. Asute Graphics' plugins are must-haves for Illustrator and really make a big difference. It's a shame AD doesn't allow plugins.
Yes some features would be nice on AD like auto trace as well. Thxx
Adobe has become greedy for years. I own AP and AD and love them. Price is great. I actively avoid software as a service.
Totally agree
Adobe will likely be comprehensive and industry-leading but for my workflow I need speed and convenience, which I found in the Affinity suite.
The price certainly led me to try it, very happy I did.
I'm waiting for the blend tool...
Dear Jhon, do what you love to do, don't care what people say or think.
You will do things for people when you are happy in what you love to do.
I wish you have fun in your activities ;)
Thanks for that Jeeff
I teach AI courses for PhD students for 7 years now and also prepared a course for AD 2 years ago. Unfortunately there are still many things not possible with AD or much harder to do than they are in Illustrator due to missing features. Expanding objects and merging or subtracting shapes also leads to strange results in AD sometimes. For its price, however, AD is great, even offering bitmap editing in one package. For many students there is also no contest because they cannot afford AI. Still for me personally, if I create an Illustration for a client, almost always will I use AI.
Maybe have Inkscape on the side for image tracing?
This is probably the better option than Illustrator for learners or for me who would like to learn. The Adobe subscription is haunting me
I just switched from Affinity to Adobe and I will never return. Indeed Affinity is easier to learn but there is so much that can be done in Adobe and not in Affinity.
Exactly, that's why I show both sides of the coin đ€Ł
Jhonatan S Silva Indeed and I totally agree with your conclusion. It is because of Affinity and your tutorials that I got into logo design. And logo design brought me to Adobe. Sometimes a costumer wants a ai-file. Thank you for showing!
Image Tracing is one thing i use the most! wondering if AD will incorporate any time soon
I hope so, many and many people are asking this. Who guess that this will be on the version 2.0
God bless us đđ
If you have access to a PC then I highly recommend Inkscape for your image tracing needs. Bonus is it's free. Vectornator on the iPad also works for simple stuff but does not do a great job with complex images.
Yep. I'll trade some inconveniences for higher performance, speed, and functionality in key areas for a one-time only cost. With the addition of Publisher to the Affinity suite, there is no need to use Adobe ever again. Especially since, for the most part, Affinity programs can import my Illustrator and InDesign projects without problems. Overall my experience was a series of delighted astonishment at what Affinity Designer can do, tempered by an occasional "bummer...oh, well."
yes, you are right!
great review..is this is a nice beginner friendly program?..im tired of confusing software that needs a masters degree to use..cheers
Dude, i have to say, affinity is very friendly for beginners. :)
@@jhon.vectorizethanks
nice explanations.. but boy that music is intrusive
Hi Jhon,
Do you find it difficult to work with clients and collaborators who are used to an adobe ecosystem (apps and software and file formats)? What suggestions do you have to navigate these issues?
Hi! I work with people that use Adobe apps, as freelancer I can send to them a PSD file, exported from Affinity, and even open PSD on Affinity works very well.
Thanks for this comparison. I think the main advanatage for for moving to Affinity is the price! Illustrator has always caused me problems and can be quite buggy, but I like the Shape Builder function. I didn't understand from the video though, does Affinity have this feature too or not?
Also, If I buy this does it allow me to alternative between PC designing and Tablet (or do I have to buy to licences for that)?
No, it doesn't.
@@StuartSeaton Separate purchases for PC and iPad.
thanks Third Dimension, he has answered your question :)
Yes thanks. I have a copy of this software now, it's much better than adobe
Want some bitmap image tracing? Just use Inkscape. Personally, I think that Inkscape with Affinity Designer makes the ultimate combination against Adobe Illustrator.
I didn't know Inkscape could do that.. interesting :)
Hi Can you trace things like in Adobe photoshop and AI... Or do you have to manually trace everything in Affinity
Manually. Like he says in the video.
Manually, Like I said haha, thanks!
Affinity for better interface and user friendly tools Adobe for advanced "paid" features
true hehe
im user Illustrator but im still confuse using this app, im using affinity on ipad
Glad to know that Muhamad :)
Overall, Affinity is better even though it's new and lacks some few stuffs.
It's much refined, runs smoothly, and gets the job done.
true!
what BGM in 3:52 plz tell me sir đ
Is It Important To Have A Ipad For Affinity or Can We make vecttors just like in illustrator in affinity as well?
you don't need to have ipad to use affinity. Desktop can do the work as well. Remember that you have free days trial to test the app. :) so give it a try
@@jhon.vectorize yeah sure..thank you for replying
Would anybody be able to explain to me what he does at 7:04 ? Basically how he adds the shiny effect to the strawberry.
I am new at this software, I just bought it 30 minutes ago in fact. But I have a lot of experience in Photoshop, and because there are various similarities I would say Outher Glow layer style with Soft Light mode most probably.
man, if affinity had shapebuilder, warp options, blending tool and tracing. I wold never have o use that stuff anymore.
yees, very true, I hope in the future affinity will bring tools like you mentioned as well! thanks bro
Also effects that can be added to any of multiple strokes or fills, transformations as effects. Vector brushes like the art or pattern brush. The puppet wrap tool. And snapping somehow is too complicated in AD.
Yep. Then just add the other 1000 things missing and it would be amazing. The equivalent of Illustrator for $50.00. LOL But for now, you get 50 dollars worth of kit for your 50 dollars.
Nah, no need to explain it all, just the realtime color feature is enough for me to swith into AD
haha, true!
đđ
too relatable bro
Some user features are really much more user friendly in AD, others not so much. Aligning to key objects is much easier in Illustrator for example. Also the snapping options while extremely customizable in AD feel very unintuitive compared to the simple way it works in AI.
When Affinity updates the UI, I might give it a chance. Right now, I can't stand the horrible colored icons. That said, I am happy to see real competition to Adobe!
I personally prefer it as it makes certain tools stand out for quick access. I sometimes stare at the tools in illustrator trying to locate what Iâm after.
I don't understand how they let you export to photoshop files, and not illustrator files. Unless I'm missing something crucial lol
I asked them one time, it's because Adobe illustrator (is closed) coding source to generate projects, hopefully photoshop does this.
Procreate also display this option about PSD as well :) see u Brandon
Corel Draw is the best. Can export to adobe photoshop and illustrator and the cheapest too
It's great value software but not an Adobe Illustrator killer for me yet. It doesn't have a shape builder tool - essential for professional logo design - and also lacks a live paint tool or anything similar & no pathfinder equivalent. Serif just throws away it's chances of being an adobe slayer by preferring to concentrate on silly features that are way down the pecking order when it comes to professional industry standard vector graphic creation.
Yeah, shape builder is definitely a big one. I really hope they add these features
Affinity Designer hasn't gotten the Warp Text functions, and that's annoying.
actually, there is a warp text using curve, just insert the text above a line. that's it
Has anybody a reasonable explanation for Illustrator's need to click that "Preview" checkbox each and every time you use an effect and - naturally - want to see what you're doing? You should expect "Preview" being "on" by default. But it isn't...
Very true
It seems to finally be enabled by default in the recent CC version. I always thought it was a safety feature to prevent crashes with crazy effect settings that you would be unable to change when preview was turned on as soon as you enter the menu.
You guys
you guys :D
i learnt a bit design back then at collage using illustrator and photoshop. But when i wanna learn seriously one problem is the price of adobe program is so pricey @_@ i can't afford it for starting new business. I learn affinity like 4 months ago. Got 50% discount for the program.. Ive make like 10 logo projects , 6 ilustration with it. It takes abit time to get used and learn the stuff but eventually i coming back at me. :D
best !!! Love affinity.. Will never use adobe again ... EVER !!!!
bye bye adobe haha
@@jhon.vectorize Too-da-loo Adobe đhaha best move yet... Loving life after adobe.. DaVinci Resolve, fcp, fusion, nuke, apple motion, affinity Designer.... Killer apps !! with great service and updates....
It's interesting. It looks like you learned Affinity Designer first then try to apply the same methods to Illustrator. Illustrator has faster ways of doing everything than manually mousing around and digging down into layers but Affinity Designer doesn't.
Let's do a combat to see who do a illustration faster, I use affinity and you illustrator. Let's see how do faster, what do you think?
@@jhon.vectorize I like challenges like that! Software combat! LOL But I think it would only prove that one person has more skill than the other in one software or the other one. It doesn't prove that the software is better or worse. I think, if you really want to know which is better then you just look at a single workflow or a single tool. So far, Illustrator has won the masking, and assets export. You simply tried to do these things in the way that Affinity Designer does them, which is slow. If you're digging into layers, you're wasting time already. That's why Illustrator makes it so you can do these things without digging into layers.
So how about the pen tool, or dealing with text. I say Illustrator is not just better, but extremely better. Illustrator's text features are amazing and so is the pen tool. Affinity Designer is just basic stuff. Unless you will prove me wrong?
Nah, I understand your point đ, actually I was just kidding,
my final opinion about it, Use what you like most, feel happy and comfortable to work with. Cheers mate
â@@jhon.vectorizeâLOL. No doubt.
Since the last Adobe update Affinity has changed from being an option to being the only way one could work with vectors in a decent way. Look at their forum: all over the world businesses are depending Adobe and now (again) can't do any work over days and weeks! I can't believe illustrator is still seen as industry standard - it's getting slower and buggier with every update they release. Seriously Adobe should refund their customers ... or we should stop paying for those unreliable Adobe products in the first place.
With me only reason: its cheaper :3
Haha true, so far cheaper
Then use inkscape, it's free.
Informative but the background music is distracting and makes it hard for me to follow what you're saying.
swoon
The color whale is.....very intuitive. It's a blue whale of color.
lol
When youâre making a demonstration video, you donât need music behind you. Itâs hard enough to understand what youâre saying and then you add music. Why do we need music? We want to hear your voice not music. The first sign of an unprofessional is somebody who sticks music behind a tutorial.
