I'm convinced I got a better grade in my Lyric Writing class in college than I deserved because she was a fan of The Mountain Goats and I was a fan of Laura Jane Grace, subsequently informed my writing and the bits and peices that stuck out.
Had the honor of seeing this live a year or so ago. Hearing Laura's voice always reminds me where I am and who I wanna be
This one time I came across Laura chatting with a group of fans on the streets of Oakland.
They were extremely welcoming and told me to sit.
I was like a little fanboy talking Laura up and thanking her for the much.
But everyone else including Laura were just chilling. Being. Telling stories. Sharing hardships. Relating.
I always knew she was one of my heroes because of the decades of fantastic punk music, but now I know it's because she's real as fuck and is so kind. To everyone. To people just like her, people so different, and annoying fans like myself.
The Mountain Goats fucking rule too ;)

Similar story. I met her when AG! was opening up for Green Day in my hometown. I ran up to her and asked for a picture. Looking back I was probably fanboying so badly. But she was so nice and dealt with me anyways 😂 I was a huge fan of AG before that but after I met her they became one of my favorites of all time.
This is years later, but I saw her in a small venue this summer. After the show, she sat down on the edge of the stage and just talked to fans for awhile. Totally open to anyone and having a good time. My number 1 show experience by a mile.
I'm so glad she's a fan of the Mountain Goats. It means a lot to me to see the artists I love talk about the artists they love, and when I love both artists in the equation, it's absolutely wonderful. Also she picked songs that were perfect for her voice and singing style and I'm so glad this exists
I'm not typically a fan of the Mountain Goats covers, but Laura Jane Grace pulls them off beautifully. I would love to hear more of them from her.

woah...there's just something really special about these covers. She's completely killing it. TMG are one of my favorite bands ever, and what she's bringing to the table with their songs is just awesome.

And that a woman can save him from it --all of it sums up to something that John now considers, quote, misogynistic garbage, end quote.
They played it in Oslo two years ago, but it was prefaced by a monologue about how conflicted he was about doing it, how it felt written by someone else, someone he had outgrown. Or the impossible balance between not censoring the past VS not spouting shit. Or something. I remember it made sense at the time.

Yes, Denton Texas. It's the first track off the album "All Hail West Texas." I know Denton isn't in west Texas, but all the characters in the album end up out there eventually. I think.
The tattoo thing was sorta an accident, she wanted a cover up and on her way to the appointment there was a suicide jumper, she reached the appointment really shaken and then payed very little attention to what the artist was suggesting so then got out of true appointment and to quote “well shit”

yeah you can youtube "Going To Georgia For Sixty US Dollars" which is a live version where john only plays it after someone pays him 60 bucks, and before he does, he talks about how much he hates it.

john: "'there's a fucking psychopath, on my porch. i hate him, and i want him to go to jail.' and if the police say, 'what if he's having some deep feelings?'"

john: "'uh, take your patriarchal bullshit down to the garbage can where it belongs and haul this guy off to jail. because he has a gun, i don't think the gun is good.' i was a sophomore in college when i wrote this song, and sophomores in college, especially boys, it's very intense, they have intense feelings there. actually, your feelings are not that fucking intense. where i stand on the question right now, is why i don't play this song anymore except when someone gives me sixty bucks for it."
