- With a stroke of luck helping him advance to the final round, Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki became the first seven-footer in NBA history to take home a 3-Point Shootout championship with a win during 2006's NBA All-Star Weekend held in Houston, Texas. Nowitzki's final rack money ball in the first round technically shouldn't have counted-he released it after time had already expired-but with no replay review system in place, Nowitzki's money ball DID count and subsequently pushed him ahead of his Dallas Mavericks teammate, Jason Terry. In the finals, Nowitzki outpaced Gilbert Arenas and Ray Allen with a winning score of 18.
Nowitzki made five appearances in the NBA 3-Point Shootout, advancing to the finals each year in which he participated. His results were as follows:
2000: Second Place (Scores of 18 and 11)
2001: Third Place (Scores of 17 and 10)
2006: First Place (Scores of 14 and 18)
2007: Third Place (Scores of 20 and 9)
2008: Third Place (Scores of 17 and 14) - Sport

They needed to add players who are amazing spot up shooters or players that proved that they can create they own shot because they often make more in the contest. That’s why this year’s was the most entertaining in years.

I saw a clip of him walking down the tunnel from a locker room and there was something above a door that one of the staff was trying to get to, but couldn't reach. I think it was a sign. He just casually reached up and got it down for her, and this would have required a ladder for her to reach. The money rack was introduced first and the scores with the money rack and without the deep threes were largely similar to the ones with the deep threes. Money rack adds 4 extra points from the same distance and the money rack adds another 4. Don't get me wrong. Good shooters back then shot around 35% compared to around 40% today, but it's hard to measure it with this competition due to the changed format.

Srikar Garapati Worth keeping in mind that today’s scoring system also allows for six more possible points (four extra money balls and two deep range balls, if I’m picturing things correctly). The game has still changed (people are raining these days) but “shots made” would probably be a more reliable comparison than points (accounting for just two extra shots they take now).

Watching these old 3 pt contests makes you realize just how much shooting techniques have evolved, players nowadays making 28 baskets, if a player makes 20 its considered "low" meanwhile Bird won with 15, Dirk with 18...
But they changed the layout. Now you can have money balls all on your best shooting position rack. Also they have the 2 Mountain Dew balls which are worth 3 points.
