I used to travel for a living from Ohio to the West Coast and back in that day (the 90's) the truckers were my guide through many a challenging weather development (tornado's, blizzards, and ice storms shutting down all roads). The drivers of today are a far cry of those that drove back then with nowhere near the skill. YOU my friend are a complete departure from them. The most highly skilled driver I've ever witnessed. Man you seem to have an agreement with the road when it had ice and snow on it nobody has. Keep up the amazing work. I LOVE riding shotgun with ya ;-)
No need to panic Mountain Mike is at the wheel. Stead as she goes. Mike has skills. Thanks for taking me along God Bless you and your family and your Bessie. You take care of her she will take care of you!!💕🇺🇸♥️
I’m not a trucker, my late Father ( a Cop) when I was a young boy... alway said that truckers are the best drivers on the road. I’m 60 now and over the years I’ve come to absolutely believe it. But I’m very comfortable with tractor trailers around. The have an enormous responsibility and follow the rules of the road to a T. There’s always a bad apple 🍎 out there. But I really respect them.
greatly enjoy your running commentary and the beautiful countryside you go thru. I love driving thru our country and the mountains are my favorite. Have driven from Titusville FL. to Las Vegas by myself to see my sister 3 times. I'm 70 and will always drive if given the chance. It would be awesome to ride shotgun thru the country you get to see. Have also driven up to Minnneapolis, MN by myself to see my son and Cinncinnati to see another son. Love driving across our beautiful country. My dad was a trucker...short haul TN, Ky, NC. I got to ride with him sometimes...so of my best memories of my dad. Thank you for posting your trips. They are great. Anne-Marie Olka...Titusville Florida.
Your driving skills are fine Mike, my only concern would be the remaining traffic surrounding you and their possible poor decisions...appreciate the video!
Riding downhill with you is Zen calming relaxation. I will watch this again in future to help me go to sleep or chill out after I break off a rusty bolt on the car. Thank you.
There shd be "do's and don'ts when driving close to big trucks" taught when ppl get their driver's licenses. You have taught me a lot about driving close to semis. I live by and am on I-285 between I-75N and I-20W in Atlanta daily, where there are as many semis as cars often. (Where the Petro is on I-285). I give trucks more room. Thx for teaching us Mike.
Mike your driving is Great!... It's the others you have to watch out for!. I learned my winter driving skills in Alaska... Enjoy the great videos. Me and my wife are living in Texas City Texas(Houston)...Stay Safe, and PEACE!
Well Mountain Man Mike, another awesome video! We both know how to drive in the mountains and drive in the snow, what so many viewers do not understand or care to understand is that you and myself, plus several others have years of experience in driving during those conditions and it always seems like those who have no clue what it takes or the only ones that have nothing good to say and as said as it to say, they are ignorant drivers and need stop with their rude comments and start listening to what you are saying in your videos; but that will probably not ever happen too. Keep up the great work on the videos! Looking forward in seeing what designs you will come out with on your T-shirts too. Might have to order me a few tees too! Happy trucking trails to you and stay safe!!!!
this is cool,,i ran those roads in the 70s and 80s,,i just wish i could talk back at ya,,they called me muleskinner,,and my dad was happy hobo,,we love ya bro,,keep the rubber side down,,and watch the chicken houses,,lol.
Another very enjoyable ride thankyou. Can't wait to buy a T. Shirt. The Drone vids will be great. For the life of me I can't see how you are a dangerous driver. You must have good concentration to be able to drive in these conditions, I would think. I commented in one vid where you were going down one of the Passes that you could feel "a certain tension" I meant consentrative tension not stress tension. I've been wanting to calify that for a while now. LOL. Until next time. ✌
O good another snow video on I70. Enjoy traveling with you. It feels faster than 55. But you hold it steady and there is little traffic. Be safe. Blessings.
When you brought up the topic of using a jake brake during the winter ( and have heard you speak about it before ) , it suddenly struck me about a driving school all drivers for an oilfield company I had hired on with had to attend no matter their prior experience and one of the driver instructors was an older gentleman in his retirement years with snow white hair and from Colorado. Now you would have thought if anyone was a believer in jake brakes it would be someone who lived and trucked their whole life in Colorado but no, this old guy was NOT a believer in ever using nor even having a truck equipped with a jake brake. Why, well who the heck knows but he was quite adamant that gearing down and using the brakes was the correct way to do it and would get all smart assed and snotty if any of the students questioned him on what sort of logic that was. We students figured that was probably why he had white hair, flying down mountain grades smoking his brakes !. And it wasn't just a winter driving comment about jake brakes, it was the use of them at any time of year. How helpful that was to have a so called instructor with that sort of a mindset.
I recall years ago I was in an ice storm in KC and lived some 40 miles from work and was driving my old 51 Ford pickup. I had a set of chains in the truck. With the ice over an inch thick I thought I would never make it home that night but after a few miles, I felt in control. Many drivers were in the ditch or just couldn't move but the chains were great.
Greetings from England. Love a Copper Mtn video in the snow. Those saying you're too fast, how many times have you seen him get out of shape? Keep posting the videos, I really enjoy them.
Enjoyed the ride along ur the captain of ur star ship u fly it the way u see fit I don't see any problems with ur driving roll on mountain Mike. Be safe out there in America
Hello, my dream was to be a semi driver and look at the scenery that you look at,so for me watching you drive and show us the road is wonderful thank you ! 😁
I panic when the first flake falls!! I drive a 4x4 Chevy truck with sand in the back for weight and new tires and as soon as I slide I pull over and call my husband to come get me. I’m trying to at least act brave by watching you and listening to your instructions. I’m in Cincinnati. Thanks!
I remember going eastbound I - 70 from Vail in a 2.2 liter sedan and that uphill grade seemed like it was never going to end. But isn’t Summit County around Dillion, CO beautiful. I’ve been through there in Summer, and went skiing at Keystone/Breckenridge in winter. Just a year round beautiful place.
You are so right about people taking your safe space. They do it to each other in cars, truckers do it to cars, cars do it to truckers, cars do it to cars, motorcyclist to it to everyone. It is an irritation for sure and very frustrating when you are driving safely and some idiot comes along and figures you are leaving a nice big open space just for him/her. Especially when they are pulling an RV behind them. You are very wise in how you operate your vechicle.
Inevitably, Coors Beer, right against the rockies in Golden, Colorado. Lived there, back in the 80's . . . right across the street from the visitors parking lot ! 🇺🇸
I've driven your definition of "freak out" in this sort of stuff before, but only with small children along. This kind of stuff by myself, keep a safe distance behind you, and I'll be just fine. Reminds me of driving through a blizzard in Cleveland, and the snow continued all through Ohio. Calmed down a bit when I got to Indiana, and nothing in Chicago.
Hey there Mike, my opinion is that 4 wheelers suddenly realize they are going faster than they were intending so then they hit there brakes. And also maybe they don’t know how to make there automatic transmission keep a steady speed. Thanks for sharing another great video!✌️
I ride my Cruiser w/high beams on as much as possible... I do it for making myself more visible. I’m acutely aware of not blinding oncoming drivers. I have the old traditional filament bulb. My single light projects in a distinct rectangular pattern. When my high beam is on, it’s projection rectangle is just slightly elevated. Does not interfere with oncoming drivers. But if I feel it’s necessary I will turn off the high beam. I never get oncoming vehicles flashing there high beam back at me. Trust me they will let you know if there feeling uncomfortable.
Stian ... I agree, you have to know when your headlight hitting other drivers eyes. Like if I’m driving down a two lane road a night I always will turn off the high beam as they approach. Or if someone is close in front of me it’s always off.
Now the law changed so people can put as many high beams as they want on the vehicles. With all the new led bars it can be a problem. So glad I don't do long haul. Hope I never have to.
I know that road well. I used to live in Avon and worked at Keystone as lift Maintenance Electrical. I did it for 5 years. Crossed Vail Pass many times when it haven’t been plowed yet. Only me on the road. Some of my most comfortable rides were on that snowy early morning no one the road but me rides. Riding along in the night, with the cab all warm, snuggled into my coat with the fur collar I'm afraid I'd be dozing with the wipers hypnotizing me into sleep. And then a shot of Jack at the hotel and I'd be done.
Hello Mountain Man Mike .This has been a quiet ride in the snow up on Valle .The traffic is not to heavy ,but the truck is let her role .Take Care we will see you on the next run .
Love your videos man. Reminds me of all the road trips we take (except the kids in the back for us). I was wondering what you are using to record your video and audio? We have tried recording while driving on road trips and always get bad reflections or won't stay focused. Maybe consider making a video of your setup :)
I totally agree with you on people hitting their brakes on a snowy road! That is the absolute worse thing to do! It is crazy here in Colorado with all these out of state drivers who have no clue how to drive in the snow, or in the moutains in snow. Better to drive slow and steady in a small vehicle than keep hitting your brakes.
Light bars are great if you're running the Alcan because the moose really blend in with the pitch black of night...but are totally unnecessary in the lower 48
Only if DOT started handing out tickets for non DOT SAE light bars, that would be awesome!!! Commercial trucks can't have more than 4 forward facing white light head lights (that's including your factory two headlights) so those multiple lights are 100% illegal.
Hi Mike: Great video, lots of snow, great driving, enjoyed the ride. No snow tires for the caddy yet? I guess those 30 cm’s let you jump out at a stop light? How will all the horse power handle the snow tires? Bet your anxious to see? See you next trip. Edward
I had a great teacher my mother in learning how to drive and I learn to take my foot of the gas to slow down and not hit my brakes all the time old school driving !!!!!!!!!!!!!
i really like the "Slow down, Move over" laws... it makes a lot of sense to give any and all vehicles on the side fo the road an entire lane of buffer zone for safety. Ron Pratt (tow operator i watch here in CZcams) mentions it often, and i totally agree with what he says about road safety, since he sees wreaks all the time. total respect to all truckers dealign with bad drivers and those taking up their space and safety zones. i especially hate seeing people literally half a car length behind trickers trailers... i mean, wow, thats insanity in any vehicle, but ive seen what happens to a vehicle when it rear ends a trailer at speed. like lots of trucks have printed on them, "if you cant see my mirrors, i cant see you" and as far as i am concerned im sticking with that and giving trucks as much room as possible. its the responsible thing to to eh.
Thanks for bringing up that point about getting over for all vehicles on the side of the road. It's just common courtesy. And the incesant braking and pack mentality always baffled me.
Little hills.... 😄 So those are people who don't have any patience. Apparently, fear does not conquer impatience! Even though they are afraid to drive fast enough to pass, they still feel the need to tailgate.
19:10 You could have said "see those sparkling bits in the snow on the road?" That's a sign that the snow is light, fluffy and DRY. As in dry ice dry. You have substantially more grip on that type of snow than you do in wet, packed and slushy snow. In fact, under the right conditions which this looks to be, snow can be even better than gravel in summer. Because the snow will bond with the asphalt underneath and act like a felt carpet. Such snow can even offer significant grip on what would otherwise be black ice as the snow will bond with the ice and shoot it's icy spikes up from it making it not only rough but also extremely abrasive. Abrasive equals friction and friction is GRIP.
Of course, one has to be careful when snow gets deep though as it tends to sandwich itself into layers and there's no bonding between those layers. Then it becomes more like driving on food trays. This sort of layering happens in any depth greater than an inch of snow. And the most "impressive" form of layering we see is when avalanches release.
Say you knew there was a blizzard for Vail Pass way beforehand and you are where the truck stops are. Do you wait it out or do you gung-ho it like this knowing that you will be facing active chain laws? Which is better in this scenario eb, wb, or neutral?
What's your take on the two massive car pileups that happened during the last 2 months? One was 60 cars/trucks and the other was 30 cars/trucks. One in VA and one in PA. Said there was heavy fog. Can you cover your recommendations in a future video? So when you're heavy you have good grip on ice. So I assume the other trucks were light and therefore were going much slower than you.
Lee Rothman hi Lee. Yes it almost seems so easy for him it’s like his 2nd nature.
I’ve never known anyone who drives semi’s or even imagined what it must be like to drive one or ride in one. This is really interesting. Thank you.
justin b Thanks so much

I agree, find it absolutely fascinating.

Another great ride. The sound of your voice is soothing too.

I've found that ignorant people always have the most to say. Just got to ignore them they'll never change.
Ima retired trucker from Canada you have the best vids fottrucking in US. Watch Juan Remple in the Canadian mountains best of both worlds !
It’s amazing how well you handled this truck in snow and Ice

I don't know about anybody else, but all your episodes are relaxing to me. Those bumps mean I70 needs maintenance!
Man Mike just an old man here keep doing what you're doing sitting in the seat next to you enjoying every minute

It’s amazing how many other drivers out there cannot drive in bad weather or think they should give advice. Everything you said is true. Good driving.
Pulled doubles for UPS 39 years .Don’t Miss that weather at all. People ,stay off your brakes! Keep it pulling Brother
I'm so impressed with your driving.
Ridin' my couch right now by the fire place just enjoyin' the show 🍻

West bound hammer down. The way it should be. Have a great day Mike.
Will you have a MOUNTAIN MAN MIKE Tshirt hopefully?
It was nice to see there were still some trees lit up. Peace to you!
OMG I feel so scare driving in those temperatures even just watching the video!!! Be safe my friend!

Thanks Mike that was good ride along. I guess people well complain no matter what. Oh well you know what you’re doing peace!!!
Those frost heaves are gonna shake up that beer!
Another great video mike , Peace !
Hey there Mike, my opinion is that 4 wheelers suddenly realize they are going faster than they were intending so then they hit there brakes. And also maybe they don’t know how to make there automatic transmission keep a steady speed. Thanks for sharing another great video!✌️
California snow sounds a lot like Virginia snow. Slick!!!
Passed each other in the night !! Sitting in Denver today, man last night Wyo was an easy drive. Hit -15f from Park City to the sisters.
Love the caddy
We as motorcycle Rider's. We run high beams in the day time so people can see us
I ride my Cruiser w/high beams on as much as possible... Trust me they will let you know if there feeling uncomfortable.
many do that, pisses me off just as much as people running fog lights in the dark with their running lights.
And the idiots still pull out in front of us
thanks for showin the lit up trees...
I remember when I lived in Leadville years ago, I wonder how snowy is right now 👀🙇I miss there :(
It know body business what your hauling
@@jameslawrence262 your comment made no sense 🤷
Very interesting viewing and commentary. Great drive.
I hope to be as awesome snow driver as you one day - starting with Knight in Denver this year
Thank Mike For A Awesome Video Stay Safe
I know that road well. I used to live in Avon and worked at Keystone as lift Maintenance Electrical. I did it for 5 years. Crossed Vail Pass many times when it haven’t been plowed yet. Only me on the road. Some of my most comfortable rides were on that snowy early morning no one the road but me rides. Now the trip back to Avon around that 6pm time frame, sucked cause ALL the drivers were on the road and going up the pass. I’m down in Denver now but this is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
I was waiting for your to ride off into the sunset on that scooter!
What engine is that, love the growl of those Volvo's when they're pulling.
Riding along in the night, with the cab all warm, snuggled into my coat with the fur collar I'm afraid I'd be dozing with the wipers hypnotizing me into sleep. And then a shot of Jack at the hotel and I'd be done.

nice relaxing ride ,,,,, be safe
DITTO !!! MMM, KEEP CALM & DRIVE ON !!!
Two people I have the upmost respect for. Big rig drivers and the chopper pilots of Vietnam. The chopper is a devilish contraption to learn to fly.
You are very correct...cars go in little herds. I try to stay between herds if I can.
You make it not scary. Thx!
Well brother just be careful man be damn careful I used to haul Budweiser LOL
Living in Vail traveled that pass many times in front wheel drive... keep your speed stable, use common sense and never had one problem
I’ve been blinded here a lot by truckers running light bars. The thing is it’s not even all the dark.. they don’t need them on.
I hate those light bars on semis.. no need other than to blind .☮️

The old ranchers around Rifle always used tall narrow snow and mud tires...Fat tires not very good in the mountains.
I had a great teacher my mother in learning how to drive and I learn to take my foot of the gas to slow down and not hit my brakes all the time old school driving !!!!!!!!!!!!!
also driving in snow no problem we can drive in snow Penna drivers here !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drove in Minnesota winter snows for 50 plus years. You learn after wyail.
Lol.. right?? I've had people from Canada tell me I shouldn't use a Jake in snow.. really? Ya learn after a while..☮️
Howdy, you there on the snowy road.
Hey Mike question man, Commercial Tire for siping or can you recommend a shop.
I was freaking out! What gear were you in?
Thanks for bringing up that point about getting over for all vehicles on the side of the road. It's just common courtesy. And the incesant braking and pack mentality always baffled me.
Very good drive safe
Good driver

Such snow can even offer significant grip on what would otherwise be black ice as the snow will bond with the ice and shoot it's icy spikes up from it making it not only rough but also extremely abrasive. Abrasive equals friction and friction is GRIP.
Of course, one has to be careful when snow gets deep though as it tends to sandwich itself into layers and there's no bonding between those layers. Then it becomes more like driving on food trays.
This sort of layering happens in any depth greater than an inch of snow. And the most "impressive" form of layering we see is when avalanches release.
Here in England we call warm snow SLUSH.

Question.
How often do you use the CB to talk to other truckers and, in your opinion, how desirable is it to have a CB?
Say you knew there was a blizzard for Vail Pass way beforehand and you are where the truck stops are. Do you wait it out or do you gung-ho it like this knowing that you will be facing active chain laws? Which is better in this scenario eb, wb, or neutral?
Cold weather in snow is great traction. Snow in warm weather not good for traction.
slightly below freezing allows a thin layer of water to form.. that's when the slipping and sliding happens. Below low 20Fs, traction picks back up.
