    Er...Ive had mine for less than a week, an SEL 2019, and drove to Miami from Orlando. Going south, it averaged about 48 mpg on the highway. It was then driven around the city for maybe 50 miles, city driving. On the way back to Orlando, it averaged 57.8mpg! Combined mileage now displayed is 61.4mpg! This is insane, however I believe driving habits may also come into play, as I hardly accelerate fast from a stop. This is a great car.

  • @MatthewSkrz
    @MatthewSkrz Před rokem +4

    This hybrid system is needlessly complex. You have the typical hybrid two motor-generator arrangement, but you still retain all the complexity and potential problems of a stepped automatic transmission *and* an added clutch pack that must open and close constantly to disconnect the engine from the wheels when the car wants to move only via the electric motor.
    Toyota’s hybrid system, with its “power split device,” has cleverly replaced the transmission and clutch in Hyundai’s system altogether with a single planetary gear-set. Through clever use of the smaller motor-generator (attached to the “sun gear”) to add resistance or assistance to the rotation of the “planet carrier” which is attached to the gas engine in the gear-set either while in motion or at a stop, this single planetary gear-set is able to perform all the functions of a infinitely-variable ratio transmission for the gas engine, which can both drive the car directly and/or recharge the hybrid battery and even completely stop without needing to be disconnected from the wheels via a clutch.

    • @lululombard
      @lululombard Před 7 dny

      I agree so much, the engine clutch pack failed twice on my 2011 Kia Optima (which is exactly the same as the 2011 Sonata Hybrid). Overall it's obvious they minimized development costs as much as they could by re-using the same A6MF2 transmission as the non hybrid and replaced the torque converter with the 30 kW electric motor and engine clutch and called it the A6MF2H.

      @@sabahjason1 You can't necessarily drive it "EV Only" since it's RPM based. As you accelerate, it will turn off the EV mode and engage the engine. Once you get up to speed you can hover the RPM low enough and keep it in EV Mode, but the battery is only there to assist in less gas mileage rather than driving EV only. Maybe newer models are different, I have a 2013 model

    What the video won't say is you can abuse cruise control on trips and get over 40mpg.

    • @grahamdavies8924
      @grahamdavies8924 Před 6 lety +2

      I don't think you can really "abuse cruise control". Maybe you just used cruise control to set a modest speed and got good fuel economy as a result. I recently completed a round trip from Boston to Toronto in my Prius. I set my speed to 71 mph and ran the air conditioning. I got 52 mpg measured at the tank (the display is about 4% optimistic). 47 mpg is great for a Sonata; it's a much, much better looking car than the Prius.

  • @Shangootiki
    @Shangootiki Před 5 lety +6

    Yea buddy, i just did the belts on one of these. Please explain: if you only have 2 belt driven components, the alternator and water pump, than why God why did you give each component a belt. Not only that, but ya put 2 tensioners on the alternator belt. Not pullys, mind you, 2 tensioners. Water pump belt doesn't even have a pully or a tensioner, but the alternator has 2 tensioners? Why 2?? It's literally designed so you need three arms to put a belt on. Two to pull back each tensioner, and one for the belt. Hyundai looked at this and said 'Yup, there's absolutely 0 better ways to do this."

    Hi I have an issue with my 2011 kia optima hybrid, when the engine is cold everything is perfectly working. As soon as the engine gets hot, thats the start of having the issue. Especially when the weather get hot. When the engine is hot, basically from driving it, and slowing down or coming from a complete stop, when i try to accelerate, the electric motor does not respond and it waits til the engine takes over in order for you to be able to drive or move the car (about 3 seconds delay from a complete stop). So when the engine gets rest a bit, then its all goes back to normal (well not quite, electric motor responds but not too long til it switches to gas motor). Basically its all about when it gets hot (weather and the engine). Do you think its something like a sensor?

      Sounds like the clutch is not working properly (perhaps not disengaging?!). Have you tried changing the fluid to the clutch? Is their any fluid leaking from the electric motor housing? I know the older hyundai hybrids put the clutch reservoir down low by the radiator and get dirty quick, recommended to change the fluid every other oil change but if it's already leaking it's too late and the engine/transmission will have to be removed 😮

  • @Trades46
    @Trades46 Před 9 lety +20

    Not as elaborate as Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive: I don't like how the starter is simply a beefed-up version found on a conventional car vs. the MG1 on the HSD.
    The addition of a regular auto transmission also introduces more complexity to the system; something Toyota smartly avoided by the MG1/MG2/Engine planetary gearset forming the eCVT without actually resorting to an external physical unit. Sure the benefit means the Sonata hybrid can run EV mode at highway speeds by decoupling the engine altogether, but EVs aren't known to be efficient at high speed either. What's the point if you're going to have to run the engine after you deplete the battery?
    I'm not convinced Hyundai/Kia developed a better system than Toyota/Lexus here.

    • @jay_321
      @jay_321 Před 7 lety +7

      Toyota's power-split transmission and Hyundai's P2-style both have advantages and disadvantages. The power-split system needs no belt drive for the starter-generator and has slightly better efficiency at lower speeds. Hyundai's P2 system is slightly more efficient at higher speeds. The primary advantage of the P2 is that it doesn't need two big, expensive electric motors to counteract the torque of the ICE as does the power-split. The P2 is a much less expensive system that achieves the same goal. Since cost is the main impediment to consumer acceptance of hybrids--advantage P2.
      Hyundai went with a conventional auto for the hybrid Sonata because many people object to the rubber-banding effect of a CVT or eCVT. I've driven the hybrid Sonata and the ICE shuts down at freeway speeds often, saving gas--even on slight downhill slopes like an overpass.

    • @Limitbreakur
      @Limitbreakur Před 7 lety +5

      I completely agree with Trades46, the Toyota hybrid system is far superior and far more reliable since you actually don't have a transmission. Another thing to note is that the Hyundai is actually cheating its customers by using lithium polymer batteries, this type of battery may cost a lot less money and does the same thing with half the size... you may want to inquire as to why Toyota or any other good company wouldn't use lithium Polymer? because they are the among the least durable and least reliable batteries akin to Ni-Cad Batteries. If it isn't Ni-MH or Li-ion, dont buy it!!

    My 1998 Buick Park Avenue got 38 mpg at 70mph on freeway drives. The secret? It had aluminum calipers, engine cradle, heads, engine block, and a light unibody construction to make it light. The other secret was the transmission had tall enough gears matched to a 3.8L V6 that could grunt- and the trans. could coast well. When you let off the accelerator- the car just kept on moving smoothly without the power train dragging. My 2014 Ram Cummins has NO ability to coast. It drags like a bum leg and gets no better than 14 mpg with a tail wind down a hill. The Ram power train can't let go and coast. Diesel is energy dense and the RPM's are plenty low enough, but the Ram can't coast. My 2001 got 21mpg in the same test conditions. The tailpipe is a labrinth- maybe it needs the RPM's to keep clean, but it rolls off acceleration like it's got flat tires.

      Yeah, but city mpgs I'm sure were half that. Most Americans live in the city or major metropolitan areas with stop and go traffic situations which greatly lessens gas mileage in traditional ICE cars leaving you with a much inferior combined consumption compared to a hybrid. Ask me how I know? I've owned everything from turbo cars, to V8s, V6s, regular four cylinder economy cars, V12...even driven a diesel. Currently have two hybrids. They're superior in every way.

      I don't know where you heard that Toyotas don't work if the battery is dead, but it's not true. In fact, once the battery has been depleted, it is essentially a small gas engine with a CVT, and still gets pretty good mileage (for no longer being a hybrid).
      It is true that the computer won't run the car if it senses no battery present. But it doesn't mind a dead battery.

      My 2013 average mpg is over 45 with careful driving. You must be a lead foot. Also you get better mileage with quality gas like Chevron.

    Toyota Hybrid? Haha don't make me laugh! Toyota just recalled 806,000 more toyotas due to faulty airbags.

    now guys, would you choose to drive a hybrid hauling huge batteries and electric motor as an extra weight or driving a V6 hauling big ass boobies?

      hybrid is now implemented by more car makers, not only hyundai. even Volkswagen has hybrid in their Toureg. Hyundai not really trying to copy toyota since other makers are having hybrid in their cars too. all hybrids have the same motive n principle, an electric motor to support combustion engine or run alone on start/slow drive to minimise petrol use. the only difference is, which car makers can build a better hybrid.

      hyundai hybrid is more similar to Honda IMA by the way. Not Toyota

      akupehsluarketatAR The HSD is a outstanding tech. the IMA is simply but is more convenient. Honda with IMA still work if the hybrid battery dead. While Toyota not work if the battery dead.

      jovenlibre in fact, if battery dead, you don’t have a hybrid at all. Shops stung up all over to service toyota, other wannabes? Not so much
