I picked up A Sultry Month earlier in the summer. I have loved reading through it as temperatures have soared in London. As you say, it really brings that period of time to life. The descriptions of the stifling heat are wonderful.

Handheld Press are great! I’ve been meaning to read Maud Martha and you’ve made me so curious about The Owl Service.

I love all your book recommendations but I was disappointed in dear miss bird end I thought that it was rushed I hoped more from it , I figured that probably there will be a sequel but never the less I don't know I wanted more than that again hope you both get better cheerio

Thank you Miranda for this year of monthly and seasonal reads. I have my September books stacked up and ready - "The Lark", "The Fortnight in September" and "Marking Time" (although I must admit I became impatient and have started reading it this week). I loved "Father" and am very much looking forward to this month's bookclub. It was a brilliant read. All of the August books you spoke of are enticing me, "Maud Martha" in particular. As you described it, I was reminded of my favorite phrase, "The Magic of Ordinary Days" (which is sort of my motto to live by). I am so glad to see you (and your Mom) are well and hope your trip to London is fabulous - enjoyed your instagram post from "The Garden Museum".

Always adore your book recommendations, Miranda. I've just finished China Court and watched last year's book club on it. The way Rumer Godden gently nudged time forwards and backwards whilst still progressing her story was spellbinding. I loved every page. I definitely intend to make that luscious sounding velvet cream that you and your Mum managed to refine. I have a soft spot for The Owl Service as Alan Garner grew up in the same small Cheshire village, Alderley Edge, as my father. The Weirdstone of Brisingaman is also a particularly exciting adventure. I'm going to try and fit in a few more summery reads in the weeks we have before autumn. The Swiss Summer by Stella Gibbons and Greengage Summer by Rumer Godden are at the top of my list.

I have seen Alan Garner's autobiography/memoir, but haven't had a good look at it yet, but imagine he discusses his childhood and Alderley Edge in it. I have an old copy of The Weirdstone of Brisingaman, I copy, and am tempted to dig that one out too. I really enjoyed the Stella Gibbons and the Rumer Godden. Enjoy your August reads!

I love The Girls of Friar's Rise - coincidentally I am rereading all my Gwendoline Courtney titles at the moment. Maud Martha and Spellstoppers appeal to me too.

A Sultry Summer and China Court would be my first choices from your recommendations. Father is waiting in the wings for me to start and finish by the 31st, in time for the Comfort Book Club. Maud Martha sounds gorgeous. I had no idea Gwendolyn Brooks wrote a novel. I can't wait to read it. I'm also hoping to get to Greengage before the seasons change. The Feast, China Court and The Owl Service are reads that continue to linger long after the last page. I adored them. As usual, everything here is tantalizing. Thank you! Wonderful recommendations, Miranda. I read both of the Rumer Godden books because of your recommendation and really liked them both. I loved The Feast so much! As soon as I finished it, I wanted to re-read it right away. It reminded me a bit of the tv series, Seaside Hotel. Thank you for sharing these August books 🥰❤☀

I havn't read any of Rumer Godden's but was aware you had mentioned her in the past. I have just recently picked up Black Narcissus, (yes, swayed by the beautiful Virago hardback edition!) so whilst it may not be a book perfect for August, I hope it still introduces me to Godden's work. I also wanted to let you know that a couple of weeks ago I read The Feast. I loved the way you talked about it a while ago, and you are right, it is an excellent holiday read. I was so engrossed in the story that I found it difficult not to check the final chapter to know which characters would survive! It’s a book that clearly shows that parenthood is not for everyone… Maud Martha had already been brought to my attention, but after listening to your reading of the beginning, I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until next summer to read it…😊📚

Welcome back, Miranda and I’m so glad you and Donna are feeling better. I’ve been enjoying your pictures on Instagram and I’m glad you’re both able to enjoy some time away. I haven’t been able to get a copy of Father but I just finished next month’s CCBC selection. I won’t say anything further other than I loved it💕 your dress and the table setting and books are all so gorgeous. And now for the books. Safe to say I’ve added most of them to my wish list. The ones I didn’t add I’ve already read, mostly with thanks to you.

As a German I thought, I really have read all from Elisabeth von Arnim, but no… The Caravaners I’ve never heard of, I’ve to do some research about the German title. Spellstoppers sounds interesting for a young family child, who (unbelievable) don’t like to read except comics… And the last one is attracting me, I've enjoyed this kind of stories about living on the country side very much and reread my books from time to time. @@MirandaMills Thank you, Miranda, I found out, it’s called 'Die Reisegesellschaft' (means 'the travel company'), I ordered it as e book for my kindle App and it’s SO funny…we were on camping vacations in Scandinavia since 1980 and I often tried to convince people, that their romantic visions from our holidays (guitar play and campfire in the evenings…)are SOMETIMES true… but not always. You probably can imagine, how amused I am😂, thank you so much! Education of men has fortunately made progress… unfortunately Spellstoppers is so far not translated into German, that’s a pity.
