    My visit to John Belushi’s grave/cenotaph • Famous Graves : John B...
John Adam Belushi (January 24, 1949 - March 5, 1982) was an American comedian, actor, and musician. He was one of the seven original cast members of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). Throughout his career, Belushi had a personal and artistic partnership with his fellow SNL star Dan Aykroyd, whom he met while they were both working at Chicago's Second City comedy club.
Born in Chicago to Albanian-American parents, Belushi started his own comedy troupe with Tino Insana and Steve Beshekas, called "The West Compass Trio". After being discovered by Bernard Sahlins, he performed with The Second City and met Aykroyd, Brian Doyle-Murray, and Harold Ramis. In 1975, Chevy Chase and Michael O'Donoghue recommended Belushi to SNL creator and showrunner Lorne Michaels, who accepted him as a new cast member of the show after an audition. Belushi developed a series of characters on the show that reached great success, including his performances as Henry Kissinger and Ludwig van Beethoven. After his breakout film role as Bluto in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), Belushi appeared in films such as 1941, The Blues Brothers, and Neighbors. He also pursued interests in music, creating with Aykroyd, Lou Marini, Tom Malone, Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and Paul Shaffer, The Blues Brothers, which led to the film of the same name.
Belushi struggled with heavy drug abuse that threatened his comedy career; more than once, he was dismissed and rehired at SNL due to his behavior. In 1982, he died from combined drug intoxication, after drug dealer Cathy Smith injected him with a mixture of heroin and cocaine known as a speedball at the Chateau Marmont hotel in West Hollywood, California. He was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004.

Hi Scott, Hope you're well mate.
I loved John Belushi, he seemed like a rockstar even though he wasn't.
I was very sad the way he passed
Bob de niro and Robin Williams were both with him just hours before his untimely passing.
It is also ironic how Chris Farley idolized John, yet he passed away the exact same way and at the very same age. RIP John Belushi and Christopher Crosby Farley 🙏🙏.

Growing up in the 70’s I remember seeing him on SNL. I was a fan of his Blues Brothers music. What put his talent into perspective for me was realizing he was on a wildly popular tv show.Had a very successful album and was in a hit movie almost simultaneously. Guess it’s true,a flame that burns twice as bright last only half as long.

How tragic that the drug dealer (Belushi’s killer) heard him breathing funny but didn’t get him any help. I guess she was also too messed up to care. This is a lesson to people not to use drugs and to be extremely careful who they choose to hang out with.

John Belushi, one of the best is all I can say! Loved, loved, loved him and Saturday Night Live too! Such a sad loss for Hollywood and the rest of the world. His death was one of those shockers where you just yell "NOOOOOOO!!" I think he started out at Second City in Chicago. So many greats came out of that place. I think John Candy did too. I absolutely adored John Candy. Another great actor the world lost. I cried when he died. Another "NOOOOO!" moment. Thanks Scott. He was my hero as a kid. He died right before my 11th birthday. I'd read his bios & knew the legendary punk band FEAR was his fave band when he died. I loved them too, being a teen punkster. A lot of people didn't know this before CZcams. I had a chance to see them in late 2000's in a club. I knew "Let's Have A War" would be their last song so I hid in the bathroom by the stage & timed it perfectly. When they walked off stage I walked backstage with them & their crew. I went up to lead singer Lee Ving & gave him a big hug & kiss on the cheek expecting to get totally stomped!😅 Instead he was the coolest mofo you could ever meet & he was surprised I knew about Belushi & him & proceeded to tell me stories over beer. Was a dream come true! Closest I'll ever get to King Belushi! RIP!🙏

It still surprises me to this day that both the Hollywood and television industries were ever able to continue after this epic shock back in March, 1982. Many celebrities found it difficult not only to continue working in film and television but also to just go on living their lives on this earth. Since John Belushi was a larger-than-life character who held the entertainment industry together like superglue, his sudden death nearly destroyed the entire industry. "How can we go on without John Belushi?" was the biggest question uttered for several months after his death by actors, writers, producers, directors, and even housewives and schoolchildren. Many didn't even have a reason anymore to get up and go to work. Some contemplated mass suicides due to the desperation they felt by the loss of John Belushi. Quite frankly, it's a miracle that everyone was able to carry on after his passing.

Even though he was only here a short time, John Belushi left such an impact through his brand of physical comedy & over-the-top characters that had inspired so many others, like Chris Farley. There was a book, Wired by Bob Woodward, that was published after John Belushi’s death that examined his life and death. Like so many other comedians, those who bring us so much laughter, they are usually the saddest. The footage of the Chateau Marmont was great. What an amazing piece of old Hollywood that still remains. As always Scott, I appreciate you. Take care.

We can never truly accuse people of being a druggy and stereotype them as we don't know anything really about why they become addicted to drugs but one thing is for definite and that is he was a truly great actor and put his negative segments of his life aside and we should love him for all the positives and beautiful movies he gave us to enjoy. I've been inside the Chateau Marmont 9-10 times (never stayed the night just hung around the bar area) but never once went there without seeing at least one major celebrity. I went to see the Belushi bungalow from the outside. While I was there back in 2013-2015 period I saw or briefly met Jacob Dylan, Robert Pattinson x 3, Christina Hendrix, Cat Deely, Justin Beiber, Scooter Braun, Demi Moore, Orlando Bloom, Rose Burn, and Paul Rudd. I am not from a part of the world that sees a lot of celebrities so it was like being on another planet. It is not considered appropriate to approach these people in there, and photos are a no-no. Very cool vibe in there and a ton of history.

@@eatassonthefirstdate he said he was living at the hotel, because there was always something going on every night. This would’ve been back in 2013.

Loved the Blues Brothers-laughed so hard! He definitely would’ve won Oscars had he not lived the fast life. I always thought he was much older when he passed away, to me he looked at least 45 in most of his later works, but that could be from the lifestyle he was living in Hollywood at that time. RIP John Belushi, gone well before his time 😢

John Belushi, I remember exactly where I was when his death was announced! Such a sad day. He was so young and had so much ahead of him.
Pretty bad when someone scares Robin Williams off because I think he was partying pretty hard back in the day as well.
Sadly that Cathy woman who left anyway even though John Belushi was “breathing kind of funny” only served 18 months. I know he was a willing participant, but obviously, he didn't know much about it because she was measuring the doses and injecting him.
The Chateau Marmont has a very wild history though, doesn't it?
Up here where I live on the Tundra there is a man who owns two cars that are exact replicas of the Blues Brothers police cars one has the huge bell speaker on top, and he's looking for another one for the second car. Nice to see it from the good old days.
Elwood: "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses." Jake: "Hit it."
    Rest In Peace John Belushi
