  • PART 2/3: in this one I walk you through exactly how I take notes using the Mistral Method for every subject!
    --- BTW! Turn on HD so you can clearly see what I'm writing! ;-) ---
    This video is part 2/3. This series is divided as follows:
    PART 1/3: How to Create a good Note-Taking system for Your Needs
    • How to Create a Good N...
    1. Important attributes of a good note taking system. (1:32)
    2. What classes to use handwritten note taking system for (4:30) and a brief spiel about handwritten notes vs typed notes (6:38)
    PART 2/3: The Mistral Method: the BEST Note-Taking System!
    • How to Take GREAT Note...
    2. the Mistral Method:
    Layout of the page and info (1:08)
    Colour coding system (5:00)
    Pens and highlighters that work well together (5:30)
    Bullet system and signifiers (11:05)
    PART 3/3: Tips and Tricks for Note Organization
    • Tips and Tricks for No...
    3. Extra tips to incorporate (depending on the subject) (1:32)
    4. Flip through some class binders where I use handwritten notes, and show you how I organize all the notes for a course (2:55)
    WHY IS THE MISTRAL METHOD SO AWESOME:
    - ADAPTABLE | I use it for typed AND handwritten notes, and I even use the same system in my bullet journal! No need to memorize different colour codes and styles.
    - EFFICIENT and QUICK | I HATE rewriting notes. I feel like I'm better off just studying. The Mistral Method withstands rapid-fire lectures and slow brainstorm sessions
    - ORGANIZED | I review, not study for tests - all because the process of taking the notes has already ensured I store the material in a logical, organized way - both in my brain and on paper.
    - TEST OF TIME | I've been using the same one for the past 2 years for all my subjects and it works perfectly!
    This system is HUGE, but it’s absolutely amazing and I’m so proud of it. I hope you use it and/or get inspired by it.! Later, I might make shorter but more detailed videos about specific aspects of my system. Let me know what you'd like to see in the comments! I love hearing from you!
    And remember: when it comes to studying, MORE isn’t necessarily better.
    A lot of people ask me about the time it takes to stay organized and whether that’s an issue. And as I’ve come to realize more and more, BEING ORGANIZED is what 80% of my success is attributed to. Sure, it takes a bit more time to GET organized, but then your mind is organized too! The tasks are easier to break down and do. And the tests are easier to study for - because you’ve been studying this whole time already. Keep that in mind! :-)
    If you liked this video, give it a THUMBS UP and click SUBSCRIBE because I post a new video about organization, bullet journaling and productivity every Thursday! :-)

    2:09 You can use the bottom space in Cornell system to review! Leave it empty after taking the general notes and when you decide to review the subject you can write a paragraph resuming the content of the page. It's very practical and useful that way actually.

    i have a colour coding system but it’s bad haha
    yellow - important
    orange - subtitles

    purple - names

    green - definitions

    I seriously watched over 100 videos on.how to take notes. Famcy, minimalistic, fast, and so on. BUT THIS! Damn, you've got it girl!
    I was wonsering. Do you.have a written version of the use of your pens, highlighters and notes. Because I really really want to start use your method, but I cannot remember everything. And to go back to the, pause it everytime I wamt to write what you are saying is a bit time consuming.
    I was wondering because you have printables on your site but I couldn't find this one I am lokking for.
    Just the color systems and stuff is what I'm looking for.:)

    Thank you so much for sharing your system with us! I just went back to university after having worked for the last couple of years and I find your videos SO helpful. During my first degree or even back in highschool I didn't have a proper system at all and now that I find myself more grown-up and organized I wish I had developed one earlier. Using a bullet journal has already helped me a lot coming up with a note-taking system that works for me, but I've never used certain colours for highlightig certain categories. I'll definately adapt that from you! :)

I so admire how you can write notes in such an organized flow. Never have been able to do that and wonder if perhaps I am missing something very basic. To add color and highlight...I can only hope. :) Look forward to checking out more of your videos. Keep up the good work!

    I do something similar to this! It a personalized Cornell System without the summary at the bottom. On the left side I usually put the main heading, diagrams (or on neon colored index cards), and sticky notes for questions and answers (in case I lend someone my notes) on the right it's everything else, including sub-heading that are highlighted in either pink or purple. All vocabulary is highlighted in orange and important points in yellow. My notes are usually done before the lecture starts so when in class I use a different color sticky and pen and add anything important my instructor says.....

    Do you have any tip for dealing with a teacher who tends to present the lecture sporadically? Like, after presenting 5 points, he suddenly adds something to 3rd point, and then he remembers to add additional info on 5th point. I'm sometimes confused of where to put these additional info if I use Cornell, so I use mindmap more often. I hope my question makes sense; English isn't my first language.

    • @ioanahayman
      @ioanahayman  Před 6 lety +18

      Heyy! A lot of my teachers are like that, and really when I hand write my notes I don't worry too much about staying on the lines - I just add in the information wherever it fits best! Sometimes it turns out a bit more mind-mappy than chronological too! I find that Scott Young's blog posts and book about "hollistic note taking" helped me a lot to figure out how to do this. Check it out here! www.scotthyoung.com/blog/2008/03/06/learn-more-study-less-flow-based-notetaking/

    these notes are great and the system you've created is amazing but since you mentioned how you don't understand the point in writing a summary, i'd just like to explain why it exists in the cornell note taking system, so since the cornell system is an entire study sytem and not just a note organization technique, it also takes into accound revision and active learning. We're already actively listeing when we organize our notes this way in the first two columns but once we're done with the class, we'd basically reread our notes from the lecture and summarize them in our own words. i find that it makes me really think about what i've learnt and sort of like the fyenmann technique, i end up studying the notes untill i can explain them in simple words.
    obviously completely fine to omit it tho based on preference, i used to do it myself, just wanted to explain the point. Also if anyone's preparing for competitive exams that have gigantic syllabus, the summary section is such a lifesaver, especially when we have to make liek short notes for quick revision.

    It's funny how I started color coding in my notes last week (though I rewrite them) and I use blue and pink the same way you do it. Now I'm honestly not sure whether I subconciously adapted a part of your system already :D I'll definitely expand mine. A question tho, do you have problems with pen smudging? I use a muji gel pen as well and my muji highlighters smudge it like crazy if I don't wait long enough.

    • @ioanahayman
      @ioanahayman  Před 6 lety +1

      HAHA! That's awesome! :-D TBH it could also just be how we think - I know a lot of people associate red with math, and blue with definitions, for example. It's strange, I don't know where we all get it from.
      Not at all, actually! Though I use the 0.38 gel retractable so that might be why - maybe the thinner pens dry faster. Some of my friends have the 0.5 ones and those definitely smudge more.

    For definitions, I was taught to use a equal sign as a definition signifier. For example it is written: term = definition. Then to signify a Q's, I put a ? in front/after the question with the answer indented below. But I like the circled number indicator so the question can be answered completely later in the notes

    I love your note taking videos! It’s helped my notes become more efficient and organized. How do you take notes from a text book? I know there are a lot of videos on CZcams but they seem so repetitive and it looks like it’s a copy and paste from what they are reading from the book. If you have any tips or tricks it would help me out so much, I feel like I take hours just to read a chapter and take notes. My class requires for me to read prior to class because my professor asks a question based off the chapter.

    • @ioanahayman
      @ioanahayman  Před 6 lety

      Thank you! I'm glad it helped! :-) I definitely don't believe in the copy-pasting type of note-taking either. I usually read and then jot down only key things, using the same note-taking system I used in this video. But I'll make a video about some specific textbook-taking tips as soon as I can, thank you for the suggestion!

      As for music, it depends what mood I'm in! Sometimes I'm really good at tuning words out and focusing and I like the background music to be something like rock because it pumps me up. Sometimes I'm more into cafe/chill vibes. And sometimes I just listen to nothing. :-) But I really can't stand rap/electronic music. What about you?

  • @mariavictoriasalita2908

    Your notes look amazing, neat and organized! Who discovered the Mistral method? It looks almost the same as Cornell. When I was studying, my notes are always incomplete and it leaves me frustrated that I end up not taking down notes anymore until we were required to submit our notebooks. Then that's where I struggled. But may I ask, is it fine that before writing down everything on the notebook whether by copying all those written on the board or and especially if the teacher is dictating what should be written, that I first write everything on a scratch paper then transfer them later on my notebooks? Thanks.

    • @ioanahayman
      @ioanahayman  Před 4 lety

      Thank you! I've called my own system the Mistral Method, and you're right - it's largely based on the Cornell method.
      What do you need to hand in your notebooks for? As for transferring, I often recommend not to re-write notes because after a while it's easy to just do that mindlessly without getting much out of it. Also, if your notes are complete and functional, they really don't need to look good because they're doing their job - to help you learn! ;-)

    Nice organized old-fashioned style you came up with, it looks like you got it working good. Here is how to take it to the next level. Go paperless! Get an iPad pro 12.9” and an Apple Pencil with Notability and you can do all of this and a whole lot more. Imagine having random access to audio of the whole lecture. Imagine adding google images, wikipedia, screenshots from third party apps, photos of the whiteboard and more. Write in dozens of colors, sizes, highlight in all colors, with custom sizes. Everything syncs to your computer and iPhone. Print out the notes before class and you have a backup ready to go. Thanks!

      Stroop I’m doing this exact thing for my lectures! My professors go through their lectures way to fast for me to write everything I want to, so the recording feature is a lifesaver for me. I also don’t like to carry around notebooks and lots of pens to uni as I have to commute. Plus the iPad Pro can double as a laptop for me which is amazing. I do still write my notes on paper as I re-format the lecture notes since my professors are all over the place. I know not everyone can afford an iPad Pro but there are loads of cheaper tablets that come with a stylus so I’d recommend it to anyone!
