- A soldier from the British Army's Ranger Regiment has talked Forces News through the Armed Forces' latest assault rifle, the Knight's Armament KS-1.
Staff Sergeant Dan Hardingham, 2nd Battalion, Ranger Regiment, said the new Alternative Individual Weapon (AIW) system offers "pretty significant" benefits as he showed it off to Forces News.
The new rifle, designated the L403A1 in British military service, is being used by the Army Special Operations Brigade and Royal Marines.

There's nothing new here, previously they were using L119 variants.

What's ironic is that the US is *finally* moving away from the AR platform with the new Sig XM7 platform (the XM7 is essentially a modernized, modular AR-18-style upper assembly on an AR-15-style lower) -- also a new cartridge (6.8x51mm / .277 Fury) for the new rifle platform. Only *now* are various ally countries moving to adopt AR-pattern weapons... which is highly unfortunate for those countries, because they're going to be pressured into adopting the new cartridge -- and at that point, they might as well adopt the new weapon system.
Super bad play by the UK MOD.

Hello from the US, out of the plethora of AR manufacturers KAC (Knights Armament Company) is considered by many the top tier of the AR world. 👍🏻🇺🇸🇬🇧
because places like the UK don't allow the development of firearms since the secondary industry there, the private gun development industry is dead in the UK over the gun bans. The UK in theory should be buying their guns from the Russians considering their socialist gun control and speech control measures in place right now. I totally understand now that the Royal Family wanted to lower their security costs but... a full gun ban goes way too far. Just look at the special operations in Canada, the Portapique shooting... if you don't think that wasn't an inside job because prince harry and megan wanted canadians to pay for their security lmfao.... it's going to be a lot cheaper now that the AR-15 and handguns are banned..... all so the royal family can save a few dollars on security, you sacrifice your own security for them. Its crazy to think the US Civilian market could singlehandedly be responsible for how this rifle is setup. Because I went to the range the other day and saw maybe 5 rifles that looked like this.
Yep, pretty much every AR setup video on youtube recently is very similar to this. LPVOs took the civ market by storm and its great to see militaries using them in large numbers.
American civilians know best from our years of drunkly magdumping into range trash.
I mean the American populace generally is willing and sure can spend more for gucci'd gear. Also, there really has been a massive movement in the domestic market for gears in general since the pandemic. Everyone is either running, trying, or saving up to a full set of gear includes plate carriers radio. I mean I wanna get some NVGs but I'm lowkey broke. At the mass scale for military gears usually reliability and marginal costs are the biggest issue, not performance. Some rifles you see these kids at the range have are some real state-of-the-art crafts.
The civilian market is usually ahead of the military, e.g. LPVOs were prevalent in competition circles long before its widespread adaptation by the military.
The US civi market spends more on weapons annually than the rest of the world combined. Mass counts.
My guess is anyone who's used to the SA-80 will likely forget that rifle ever existed 5 minutes after they pick this up.
definitely. The whole "manual of arms" myth has never been proven with any data. It's like saying if you use a fork you'll forget how to use a spoon or vice versa. Learning to use an AR is so intuitive people generally learn it extremely fast as you say, regardless of prior weapon experiences.
So happy to see our brothers across the pond finally use this system!

That's definitely one of the nicest AR15 based setups in military use. Those Knights guns run very well suppressed. Just curious though, will that LAM hold zero mounted on the side of an mlok rail like that? Even with a bit of pic rail seems like you'd lose zero pretty easily.
And where on gods earth would you mount it? I would love to hear this answer.
If thats a knights rail? Id assume so. I believe one of my buddies has one on his Knights SR-15 and his laser holds zero, but his is top mounted. Im not exactly sure if that makes any difference when it comes to MLOK. I still prefer beefy pic quad rails and run a MK18 for my SBR but i run the Giessele Mk8 Rail on my 14.5 inch set up and thats never lost zero with my laser on there
what side you mount on has no effect on how well a laser maintains zero, that's all about how rigid the rail locks up and knights rails have some of the best designs out there when it comes to maintaining laser zero, usually if its side mounted its because of either ergo or balance reasons
@@henryliu1046
Exactly I have a Pec15 mounted zero issues in 3+ yrs
@@fredted1611 you’d mount it on top, obviously. It wouldn’t matter if this was a quad rail, then you could mount it anywhere. But seeing how this rifle only has one solid rail at 12 o’clock and the side / bottom rails are MLOK attachments, it would be safest to mount the laser on top. @kaotix_music in this case it does make a difference because of the reason stated above. Handguard rigitity also plays an important role, but if the pic rail it’s mounted to isn’t rock solid, you can have the most rigid handguard in the world and it won’t matter.
As for getting in the way of the scope, it won’t. Above 3x magnification you’re barely going to see the laser, above 4-5x you won’t at all and since you have the Aimpoint ACRO on top, that is clearly higher than the laser, you have very little reason to use the scope at 1x at all because the red dot will always beat it at 1x

Well I guess when you consider the UK Army was around 155,000 strong in the mid 1980s when the SA80 was introduced, and it's now only 79,000 strong the MOD only has to buy half as many. Of course they won't have to pay H&K to re-engineer them all as they did with the SA80. Just think, in 20 years time when the Army is only 10,000 strong what magnificent kit they will have!
For the price they spent on these they could get a FNH M4/AR in the same configuration for 155,000 men lmao. The KAC is the cream of the crop hands down, but I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze imo. The FNH is nothing to sneeze at however. Don't you love that?! You see what top tier military units are all a-twitter about. And then you look in your gun safe... and you go... Meh... Damn Groovy!
I'm genuinely curious - why do you have the same pattern of rifle in civilian households that is issued to military units here? What is the benefit vs. the obvious risks?
@@SprikSprak it’s a great rifle for mass killing children every home needs one
Because we can.@@SprikSprak
@@SprikSprak so we don't get cucked by our government
At last MOD procurement actually got it's act together for once. We should have moved from the SLR ( which I loved ) to a tried and tested platform back in the eighties. The SA80, although improved out of all recognition at great expense from the original model was arguably never fit for purpose. A hold over from the day's when contracts were given to the lowest bidder and soldiers needs and lives were of secondary importance, anyone remember DMS boots, woolen gloves, and the fact we were not even issued with wet proofs.
Would have LOVED to be issued that 👍🏽👍🏽
would hate to have to actually fight with it
its about time our men had a good piece of kit
Wow! The British army is only about 20 years behind....
classic case of if its not an AR15 its bad right here
@@spirit_miku nope, not at all.
I had the pleasure of using all 3 SA80’s it had its benefits but it had a lot more negatives .
I wish I had a AR platform when I served for 20years
What specific IR device and suppressor is that? I wanna do more research
Can’t wait to add this one to my collection 😊😊😊😊
good value for money, exceptionally well built, makes strategic sense to be standardising on an AR style platform similar to our allies.
Would love to see those royal guards with these
You won’t, not soon, it’s only for rangers and Royal Marines
They'll keep the new sa80 for drill and ceremonial I'd emadgon..16 air assault brigade will get them guards and para combined..not the guards regiment for a couple of years
Thank you!
The bullpup was ridiculous... we were all laughing behind your backs.
Welcome aboard!
Love the mlok handguard, what inch is it?
Sadly another rifle I wont be able to afford, or even be able to find because Knight’s releases about 5-10 rifles per year to the civilian market!
At least you have that problem, no one in the UK could even own it had they the money.
idk why knights is like that. I wanted to buy a new can and wanted to try out their new suppressor....to find out its not even on the civilian market. Like what the heck?
They would make alot more money if they did more for the civilian market I dont know why they aren't tho there is a huge demand for ka rifles

Blame your ancestors for willingly giving up rights to the government for a false sense of security.
£15m for 1600 rifles. Someone is being ripped off; the British taxpayer most likely
This comes with various optics, suppressors, mags, spare parts. Etc
The Vortex scope if bought on the US civilian market is $3500 US. I am not sure what the MOD is paying for them with a volume of scale contract but they are probably still very expensive.
That's not too expensive when you consider the prices of the firearm itself, the aiming laser, scope, red dot sight, suppressor, suppressor cover, spare parts and most likely also some training instructions for the troops.
@@SCscoutguy where are you seeing the lpvo for sale? To my knowledge its not available to anyone commercially yet. Its a shortened 1-10.
@@biunzRSThey did a press release in April saying it should be available in the first quarter of 24 at a MSRP of $3,499. I found it in a reddit post when I googled it. I was just posting mainly as a reference as to how expensive these optics can be.
It's about time!
It’s not just the rifle. It’s the man behind it
a 22 is a 22 regardless of whoever is behind it
From a walnut and steel rifle guy: how many hundreds of times are the AR guys going to reinvent the same gun and call it different?
How many times are people gonna reinvent the car and call it different? Kind of the same thing. There's always room for improvement.
Don't fix something that isn't broken?
@@Mv10101 well, no one said it was broken. The comedy is that we’re “showing off the new KS-1 assault rifle” like it’s a state of the art piece of technology when it’s really just the exact same 60 year old rifle like it is in every one of the other 1,000 combinations of colors of plastic and ambiguous names.

Anything is better than a SA80, a sharp stick for instance
At long last a weapon that inspires some confidence that the UK military is taking things seriously. Gutted that we never had something decent in my day.
Lovely looking gat!
