    interestingly enough, at least interesting to me, studies have actually shown women tend to be really into serial killers/true crime type content because they often, consciously or subconsciously, see themselves in or empathize heavily with the victims. they feel as if they can either learn something from the situation or feel relief as they are NOT in the situation

      It makes intuitive sense because women on average are physically smaller than men and women are statistically more likely to be victims of violent crime by men.
      Most women go out at night, hop into an uber, walk down the street, with a deeper underlying apprehension that they might be in danger of someone attacking or abducting them. It's a sad reality but it's true.
      So at the surface level it might seem as though women have this obsession or fascination with violent crime/murder media when in reality, it's just an opportunity to learn and also empathize in a safe setting.

    • @Dexiclon
      @Dexiclon Před rokem +50

      @@pasta8793 I see where you are coming from in some senses, but couldn’t it also just be the usual morbid curiosity? Couldn’t it just be an interest in that field of criminology, policing, investigations, etc. Also, some of the things you said about violent crimes were not totally accurate to the actual data. I mean men were more likely to be victims of violent crime in some years like 2019 and not in others, like 2018. I think you may be referring to more specific violent crimes like rape. If you include all violent crime it’s sort of a toss up year to year between men and women who have the most victims. Men are however always seemingly more likely to be the violent criminals but the data from the past 15 years suggests that neither sex is all that more likely of being victims of violent crime. Though, like I said previously if you pick and chose specific crimes like rape, murder, battery, you may see different results from the trends.

    I was actually pleasantly surprised by this movie, after streaming it last night. I was not expecting so little 'horror' in turn for more of an emotional undercurrent, utilising the paranormal/ghosts not necessarily just as a means to spook the protagonist/audience but to help the young boy live through his trauma. Also the sibling bond played into this dynamic, I liked how despite the sister helping the police with her sixth sense, in the end the boy had to fight his way through to survive, obvious parallels to the Dad beating them with a belt, and the abductor wanting to do the same, thus him having to literally escape abuse. The adult dialogue was a bit clunky at times, and I felt as though Ethan Hawke's character was supposed to be more of a stand-in for any abuser, yet the studio was probably afraid of having too 'plain' of a villain and had to go for the mask + Pennywise balloons to market it as something else. However, I liked that they at least called it 'The Black Phone' instead of 'The Grabber'.

    adding my own thoughts to noel’s ‘art is dead’ take:
    the film industry is definitely aware of how society’s engagement has changed over the years. apps converting to the tik tok model has decreased attention spans dramatically. many feel the only way to keep people engaged now is with easter eggs/nostalgia bait crammed in a 2+ hour story, so they’ll go discuss theories on reddit. and with hollywood pumping all their funds into those concepts, it is essentially destroying how we view films that exist as independent stories. short term it’s been great for big companies with those IP’s, but long term it’s killing the industry as a whole. and it sucks
    however, there’s still a great number of people working to create engaging films. just this year alone we’ve gotten RRR, elvis, EEAAO, the northman, and crimes of the future, to name a few. shoudnt give up just yet

If I wanted to turn my brain on I would probably either read a book or look for a good TV series -- something with enough space to unpack complicated themes and characters. Movies have trouble squeezing in complex layers without rushing stuff faster than my poor tired brain can follow.

I hate feeling disappointed, partially because it's an unpleasant emotion, but also because I feel guilty for being disappointed in someone else or their work. I've compromised wanting to see movies but also regularly feeling hopeless or whatever by not seeing things in theaters. It allows me to do my own emotional nonsense reaction in my house, without having to try to either look like I'm happy/enjoying it or being visibly disappointed for a dumb reason.

    • @DoubleDrayco

      Yeah I think watching this in theaters definitely tarnished its reputation for me in my mind. People were talking and screaming and yelling, and the movie (in my opinion) wasn't NEARLY scary enough to warrant that reaction, so it got annoying. That coupled with the fact that I like to feel immersed in the world or the story, and being in the loud theater, didn't allow me to do that, was also a negative thing. I have no clue how people can say this is a 10/10 (though I know horror movies in general are pretty bad, so I see that perspective too) and even have the boldness to claim that this is somehow creative. I'll say the movie is good but definitely 1 million percent overhyped.

    I don't think art is dead. It can definitely feel that way at times but you have to remember art is an acquired taste. It can be books, games, movies anything, when someone first starts enjoying and looking deeper into an art form the stuff that they will enjoy the most will be the surface level easy stuff, they wont have the pallet to appreciate the more nuanced stuff. But everyone will grow in their appreciation eventually, some faster than others depending on how deep they dive in. With movies it always feels like they are just getting worse and worse, but looking back over the past decade we have had no shortage of truly great and inspired works of art. There will always be the vocal minority of people who truly and deeply love film and for those people I think it's worth it to try and make the best quality stuff that you can. It can definitely still feel defeating at times but I think that's just the life/curse of being a working artist. Thanks Noel for sharing, its comforting to hear others still care about film.

The scene you're speaking of which I know exactly which one with the crying sister and her father literally made me put down everything and focus on this film the way she cried how she breathed and just everything I was truly stunned by her performance. The only thing is I wish we saw more of Ethan Hawke, I mean he was the reason I watched it but he spent most of the film in a creepy mask so it was hard to really connect to his character, we didn't even know his motive really....I wish we got more out of him, his dialogue was okay but I wanted to see creepy ethan hawke you know? It's just your typical hostage/serial killer trope with a supernatural deus ex machina. Add in a dose of the retro Middle American kid aesthetic that Stranger Things has made trendy, and yeah, it's not "bad" for the genre and fits well into people's current tastes in horror, but it's definitely not worthy of the acclaim. • @gdadder
      @gdadder Před rokem +5

      The supernatural part is most definitely not a “deus ex machina” cause it doesn’t even save the kid in the end, it’s just there as a plot line for the dad to hate the kid and think she’s crazy. The ghost phone I actually thought was done pretty well, it wasn’t just “oh hey! We have information to tell you”
      the kid actually had to figure it out himself even after they told him stuff; although The future powers definitely could’ve been re written to something else but it’s by farrrr “stereotypical” this movie shy’s away from lots of stuff and it’s more of a thriller/suspense than a horror movie.

    You are 1000% not alone in feeling this way. As a visual artist I get frustrated that you have to make fan art, sell your soul to advertising, and/or make new shit everyday to get seen or remembered anymore. Guess that’s art now. So, just know that countless artists across all fields feel it too 🖤

    “Art is dead” is a very defeatist and cynical way to view the cultural landscape of art today... the mass public has always been somewhat disconnected to art and only consume the most accessible options. This is not a modern phenomenon, it has been this way since the dawn of time. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t artists with passion who are creating art the way they want to that’ll be revered for years. Likewise, there is a community of people who will keep that art alive by remembering it and sharing it to others. Just look at the movies from this year. 10 or 25 years from now, nobody is gonna be looking back at the impact that The Black Phone had on the film industry, but I guarantee you we are going to ba talking about films like Everything Everywhere All At Once for decades to come. Even in the horror genre, where it’s mostly the same old flicks, we’ve gotten gems from people like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers. And that gives me hope and motivation to create art as well, that even in a world where it can feel depressing for artists and appreciators alike, people are still making art.

    There will always be popular commercial media that don’t necessarily possess nuance or complexity. Don’t expect the general population to judge art with the standards as you (who might be more critical of what you consume) do, and you wont feel so grim about art being dead. Also, throughout history Art has gone through cycles of inventions and reuses since its birth, for a long long time the majority of artists made their livings by copying masters of their time or of the old, and then maybe a handful of them stood out and carved their names in history. Mass produced media of this time surely makes it seems like all that floods the general population’s consciousness is unsophisticated and surface level entertainment, but that’s not the case. Chill.

    Not that you're going to see this, but I think this is a good step for your art. I've been in a similar place with my artistic projects, but I've found that it has been for my benefit to let go of art trying to be a vessel for people to "get" me. I now see artistic processes as modalities for self-realization/curiosity stimulation, and seeing it this way can turn it from a production/promotion oriented cycle to a quieter, more relaxing process that is really just for yourself and for the love of the medium itself. Wishing you luck as you figure out your relationship to your own particular work
    TLDR: art is sometimes the most rewarding to make when you know nobody gives a shit but you just love making it anyway

    When you're socialized as female growing up, you're taught to conceal your anger. The little part at the back of your brain that wants to stab people. Everyone has one, but men are allowed to fight and scuffle and be verbally angry. It's not encouraged, but it's allowed and okayed by society. So I feel like there's this release when women and people socialized as women see gore and violence in horror movies and get that rush a horror movie brings. Almost every horror fan I know irl is female or AFAB. Horror is cathartic.
    Plus women see way more blood than guys do, you become desensitized to blood when every month it's like a crime scene in your pants.

    I would love to know your opinion on other films like Everything everywhere all at once. I think the feeling that "nobody cares" applies in anything, we live in very strange times oversaturated with information but at least we get to see things that we don't understand the hype of and laugh about it.
