Doberman Health Issues: My Dog Died from Hepatitis (CAH) of the Liver

  • I recently lost my Doberman to Chronic Active Hepatitis (or CAH) caused by Copper Storage Disease in his liver. This is a very serious genetic health problem that disproportionately affects the Doberman Pinscher breed. In this video, I open up about how this horrible disease progressed in my dog and eventually took his life. I'll also go over what signs you should look for in your dog, and why we ultimately made the gut-wrenching decision to put him down at the young age of 6 years old.
Cooper was my best friend, family protector, and co-host here at Doberman Planet. He will be missed more than I can possibly describe.
This revelation may change things here at Doberman Planet a bit, but I promise you that this isn't the end. I love this breed too much to just walk away. John!!! Condolences for Cooper and your family. Rest in Peace, Cooper, but we all know as an active Dobe he is running and playing like crazy wherever he is! You are an inspiration to all Doberman owners Planet wide! To me and our family, your videos have meant so much. My son, at 17 years old, spent hundreds of dollars on a fawn Doberman puppy and brings him home one day out of the blue. We have never owned a dog before. Your channel and others like it saved our lives! We love Louie. He is a part of the family. I know it is hard, but this channel needs to keep pumping out videos and tips catered to Dobermans. We are constanly using all of your links and watching videos. And, the key is the kind, precise, caring and genuine way you yourself present the material. You are not an elitist owner, we can relate to you!!! I know it takes time to wait when in mourning but when you are ready, remember you have a gift for helping Dobermans and families. And, a new Doberman puppy would give you a lot of material to continue to help us out here. Your mission in life, eh?

Man... your comment made my day. I just made my wife read what you wrote. I can't thank you enough for those kind thoughts you took the time to write out (and the motivation you gave me to keep working hard). It means so much. I'm so glad you guys are getting something out of the videos. I'm so happy for your family, which now includes Louie! I'll work hard not to let you down! Please don't be a stranger on my channel!

@@DobermanPlanet Thanks, we live out in Utah and plan on taking Louis on some good backpacking trips next summer, especially with your help and tips. Yes, those of us who are clueless at first, your channel is a lifeline. Here is another reason why: people spend a lot of money trying things out for Dobies because they go through a LOT of stuff! Your chew bones for the crate and leashes have been spot on! They are a custom breed with custom needs, and of course your delivery is very kind and good. And, I bought the Shadow Eyes book, good read! I would like to see a war movie about Cappy (he has a memorial statue in Guam) and the other Doberman heroes from WWII. If they made it like Hacksaw Ridge, Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers, NOT A DRY EYE IN THEATRE. It could do a lot for the Doberman breed and show them as the loyal, Marine, Semper Fi, heroes they are! Anyway, keep plugging away! Thanks!

Hi man Im so sorry for your lost. I just lost my male European Dobbie , Dillinger last week due to liver cancer. He was my buddy for 9.5 yrs. It very hard to not see him around the house any more. We did everything together ; fishing, running, walking, bicycling... It happend so fast, he left us 4 weeks after we found out about his condition. He was fine and running 2 miles everyday with me 2 months ago. Our guardian angel had left to see the god!

Like you said they are such a big presence in your life. They are so close to their people, they literally do everything with you. Just thinking about her not being in our lives anymore is devastating. Thanks for sharing your personal story about your Cooper. I hope my Ryder lasts a bit more and gets through One more Christmas with us 😞

I’m so sorry for your loss John, I lost both of my Dobbies a year ago. Drey a Brown / Tan boy nearly 10, & Missy a Black / Tan girl 10. The boy had strokes, and got worse over time and the the girl went 6 weeks later, she just gave up with her body, due to pining for Drey. I struggled with there loss, so I know mate. Copper will always be with you, always, never forget that. He had a great Dad & lovely family who loved him and cared for him. I have put a picture of my two Dobbies on my profile for you, in Coppers memory. Al. 👼

I am so sorry. I know how lost you feel. These Dobie's make such an impact on our lives and souls. My first Dobie, Duke, lived for 17 1/2 years. He had 3 surgeries for socks. Yes 17. My second, Benedict, had 2 bad kidneys at birth as well as diabetes regarding the kidneys. He lived a great life for 2 years and 4 months. My 3rd, Sly, lived for 10 years, tumor in lungs. I have 3 other dogs I love completely. But I am missing the Dobie life. My heart goes out to you. Much love and prayers to you and your family.

John I’m so sorry for your loss of beautiful Cooper. They leave a huge hole in our hearts. From the 4 videos I just watched of you and Cooper you can see all the love you have for each other. Hope all your wonderful memories you have help ease the pain a little for you and your family. Cooper is running free with 7 of my boys and all the other Dobermans. ❤️🐾🌈🐾🙏🏻. I actually just found your videos tonight. The first one caught my eye “American vs Euro” . I posted a comment under that video telling you about my 7 Dober boys. I just lost my last one in June from cancer. You have great information about the breed. Over my last 40 years having them I am still learning something new about them. I didn’t think I could ever have another but as you well know they are so awesome, unique, loving, loyal. I’m 65 years old and lost my husband 4 years ago from cancer. Now that I live alone I do want another. Just started looking a couple weeks ago trying to decide which one I want. I know it takes time to even consider getting another. There was 10 years after my 4th which was 12 years old until my family decided we were ready for another. Ended up getting 2 male litter mates a red and a black. I will continue watching all your videos and maybe someday you will have another co-host. You can’t ever replace Cooper but hopefully you will love another one day. Again, I’m very sorry for you and your family. Thanks, Debra

Debra, that was such a nice message to read. Thank you so much for spending the time to send those thoughts my way. I won't lie, it's been tough without Cooper. I still walk in the house and expect to see him running up to me but it's just dead quiet. I think my family has had enough time to get through the worst of it though, so we've started our search recently for our next Dobie. I agree, it seems like you can never learn everything about this breed. As obsessed as I am with this breed and even though I study them for hours a day, I still learn something new just about every single day- it's crazy. Anyway, I hope you do decide to get another Doberman. You sound like a loving person and there's a Doberman out there who needs that love... and will give it back 10x! Take care, Debra!

So sorry for Cooper's loss. It's one of the hardest things to experience to lose a beloved family member. My very first Doberman, Abby, died from hepatitis 26 years ago. She was only 3. She was my baby. Slept by my side every night. I've raised 4 Dobermans and lost my last one 2 years ago. I would so love to have another one but living on a retirement income now I haven't found one I can afford. Through the years I've had other breeds, but none compared to the intelligence and loyalty of the Doberman breed. For those who have one currently, cherish every day you have with them. They truly are so very special!

Feel terrible about your loss. RIP Cooper. I lost my friend, son, companion and personal velcro recently......a working line GSD.....my boy, Lordie. He had developed an Abscess, which was mis-diagnosed as a hematoma......long story short, it developed into septicaemia, leading to organ failure and death. Diagnosed properly, it would have been an easy fix, and he'd have recovered quickly. Everything happens for a reason, and I stumbled across your channel right when I lost my Doberman. Dexter was my 3rd Doberman and he passed from Liver Failure. John, I'm sure this is a rough video to come back to, even over a year later. But I didn't find your channel until recently, just after losing my 7 yr old red doberboy to Hepatitis with copper retention plus leukemia on 9.11.20. My previously passed dobes had much longer lives. When I saw the title of this one and learned the Hep also got Cooper and so young, my heart broke for you. Our Boyd was also a more laid back, loved people, would go anywhere and do anything for you type. I have another older female dobe, and two other dogs as well, but Boyd was my shadow. The other dogs sure helped us with coping.
Very shortly after losing Boyd, a 10 month old doberboy with zero training and a very high energy came into a good rescue near us, and we welcomed him into the family on 9.20. It was as if Boyd knew I needed another dog attached to my hip, copilot on my adventures, passenger in the car, and blanket across me at night. These are not things the other dogs we have enjoy much, but the new guy Kobi sure does. He's also a total challenge and needs lots of attention, but hey, hard to be sad when you're worn out right? We're starting week four, beginning group obedience at the end of this month, and while I'm still in tears just reminiscing here, the heart sure makes room for another dobe. Kobi is my 5th dobe in my life, and my husband's 10th. Hope your Arlo is just as heaven sent, and brings you and your family many long years of joy and love. I sure am enjoying watching him grow up. Thanks for sharing both your lovely boys with the world.

So sorry to hear what has happened. I feel your pain and you have my deepest sympathies. My Miniature Pinscher passed recently due to acute liver failure, however his liver was also small so it may have been more chronic. They were not able to tell me what caused everything, but it appears chronic pancreatitis may have caused a blocked bile duct, backing up things into his liver. Chronic pancreatitis is problematic, as it had mild symptoms, but internally other things were going on causing issues for the pancreas, making it swell and blocking a bile duct. The tricky part of a blocked bile duct is that they get very hungry, so when they are eating so well and anxious for food, you tend to think things are going reasonably well, when they are not. So, they tell me that the liver can compensate and do its job until 80% of the liver is gone. Once they hit that 80%, things go bad rapidly, which comes as a shock. In all my years of having several dogs, I have never encountered anything like this before. My baby was only 6 years old and it just breaks my heart that I wasn't able to help him and have him with me yet. I realize it has been about 4 years for you and your loss, so hopefully you have adjusted to the loss. Take care John.

We did everything to help him but the best kindness was to let him go. He was my mom's service dog and a lady's man. He will be miss as well as Cooper. My heart goes out to you.

sorry for your loss. i'm sitting here watching & remembering all the fun with my brothers dobie, cruiser. she was half blk/tan & half red/tan. he had to put her down due to cancer when she was 11(?) it broke my heart almost as much has his. while i'm tearing up for your loss, and ours, i going through memories & smiling. cruiser was always on patrol when my son was outside playing. you could not play with her or pet her while they were outside together. no birds allowed on patrol! lol & if my cat went outside she'd get penned down, sniffed from head to tail & released before patrol would resume. lol just loved how much cruiser loved my son. she did send him flying a few times if he got out the back door slightly ahead of her & man would he get tossed. had to make sure she went first to do her job. lol

Sorry for your loss. Cooper inspired me to look into the Doberman breed. I haven’t as yet bought a Doberman but when I can afford one a Doberman is the dog which I would get, they are misrepresented as dangerous and vicious but after seeing cooper and your videos I see that it’s the owners education and socialisation that creates a good or bad dog.

Even though we haven’t had charlie for a whole year it feels like he has been with us for multiple years. God is answering our prayers but unfortunately they are not exactly how we would have it, but we know god is answering our prayers. Hoping and praying that we can have him for at least of 3/4 of life expectancy. Doberman community please feel free to contact me at this point anything helps. ❤❤❤

The last four weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions. I've been debating back and forth on whether to go down that path again regarding getting another dobe. As you already know, dobermans are a lot of work, but they are amazing animals. RIP Hanne.

John, I cried through this whole video and totally feel your anguish. Sadly, our wonderful breed is plagued by many diseases and ailments - and it's due to poor breeding practices over the years. I, myself, have lost 4 of my precious Dobermans in a 4 year time span. DCM and CVI were the two main culprits that took mine, but I know that liver disease is right up there in the top 5 killers of Dobermans. I am saying all this as a preface to the fact that I admire how much you advocate for this breed by encouraging owners to DNA test their pups. I, too, am an ambassador and advocate for this amazing, incomparable breed, but sadly, even with due diligence on our part, our breed is declining and, the worst news I recently read is that this breed may actually go extinct in the next 20 years. I refuse to accept that, and therefore I am thankful to see you going forward with your videos and strongly encouraging folks to DNA test their dogs. We have to eliminate the poor breeding practices by whatever means we can. I stand in full support of you and your channel and God bless you for all you do for this amazing breed.

I know this is an older video but I'm so sorry to hear about cooper. You're second channel I subbed to that lost a dog to a genetic issue. The canine show lost his 4month old cane corso recently. She had a genetic heart defect he did all the testing you should and breeder did all their checks just kinda crashed one day. Sucks to lose a friend. I'm dreading when my 10year old golden will leave my side. Nothing can prep you for it. Nothing. I take comfort in fact I firmly believe their physical self leaves but their spirit never strays from your side. Ever. Much love from the OT up in the great white north. I'll be lighting an L in his honor for sure.

She still eats and is alert and what not. She is on medications right now, but I worry she won't last long. I'm glad you posted this video because it gives me hope. So sorry for your loss! Been watching you for a couple of weeks now. We lost our Atticus at the age of 6 1/2 years. I love that I’m not the only one that jumped into getting a Doberman without doing my research. I wanted one so bad. And I realized too late that I got him from a BYB. My first year with him was such a learning experience! He died from a very bad bloat episode! It’s been almost 2 years and I still cry. I am just now looking for another Dobie boy. I have been watching you. I want to do it right this time. Not easy to find a breeder though. We don’t care about the cost. I am 62. My husband will retire soon. So we are totally ready for a new boy!
