  • Starting a new series for 2024, Mike's Big Martial Folder Exploration Journey, with some all-around favorites, comparing my two preferred blade shapes (drop point and clip point) as well as the Large vs XL size.
I'm not putting links because prices on these flex frequently, so shop around. You should be able to find these between $60 and $90 USD, possibly less.

Oh now we are talking my language. Been a cold steel fan since the early 80s. I don't have every model but I've got a bunch. I love Lynn Thompson's ideas of HUGE blades and ultra strong locks. When the voyager series first came out , I saw them at a gun show and before I left swore I'd get a clip point XL. I did but the only one he had left was clip point with partial serrated blade. I got it any way, and have carried everyday since. Easily over ten years. Use it at work for opening pallets of paper and boxes, removing nails, digging splinters out of my careless hands. I've actually grown to like the serrated part because if a box on a shelf has a strap around it still, I can just slide it under until a tooth hooks and yank, works great. I can't wait to see what else you have of CS lines. Great as always Mike.

Michael I stumbled on to your Channel by accident and let me tell ya, I’m glad I did. Out of all the CZcams Reviewers you are the Most In-depth Reviewer I Found. I’m a Huge Cold Steel Fan, I’ve Been Collecting and Using Cold Steel Since 1997. I’ve had Close to 60 CS knives over the Years and out of all the Knives I had, the Voyagers are on Top. I’ve had every Blade Shape in the Voyager line and I’ve had the 3” Mediums, 4” Large and the 5.5” XL. Out of the Entire Voyager Line the 5.5” XL Drop Point is my Favorite. It Doesn’t matter what situation arises and or where I’m at the Drop Point will do the Job Perfectly and I don’t have to worry about Breaking my Tip. Sorry for the Super Long Comment. I can SO relate to your "madness" here Michael! Tri-ad locking Cold Steel folders... Voyagers, LG & XL's, Counter points, Holdouts, Talwars, Espada's, even the Ti-Lites (you get where I'm going) and so on, are my favorite EDC folders to carry, and I have a "few" folders! Mike, I can safely say that I am going to enjoy this series just as much, if not MORE (?) than your GREAT large fixed blade series that you did last year!!! I haven't left my house without a Cold Steel XL folder in my pocket for the past 2 & 1/2 years (when I discovered Cold Steel!)! EXCELLENT video here to start and very much looking forward to the rest!!!

Very Nice! I love CS and the Voyagers... I have two Vaqueros, plain and serrated, and both cut exceptionally well! Just he point is a little thin... Thanks to the serrated voyager I started to think that probably a serrated blade could be better for daily cutting task... Unfortunately CS don't make the four inches serrated, a better size for carry... Next in my list is the four inches drop, it is a beautiful blade!

My most carried knives are the large Voyager and the Recon 1, both clip points. They're very similar, though I use the Voyager more as a working knife. The Voyagers definitely need sanding on the handle scales, but once that's done they're great. The Recon 1 is good to go out of the box and overall feels more refined.
I think I need to get one of those XL drop point Voyagers.

very sturdy knives, and I like both sizes. The XL would be a bit large for carrying in the pocket for long treks in the woods, but it works well as a camp knife. Looking forward to seeing more in your series of big martial folders.

To be Completely Honest with ya, you don’t even realize that you are Carrying an XL Voyager. I’ve carried, Walked and Hiked Miles up and down Hills and in the Woods with my XL Voyagers and barely felt any Difference btw them and a Smaller knife. My New EDC Blade is a XL Drop Point Voyager. My XL will be the only Folder I will Carry and use.

I carry an XL serrated Tanto daily. I would be lost without it. This year I’m going to pick up the Xl Vaquero serrated, and the XL Talwar serrated. After Watching Lynn and JoeX demonstrate the abilities of these Voyager XL’s you’d be hard pressed to find better.
I’m really looking forward to this series of reviews from you. Happy new year!

A great video as ever ,full of all the information anyone could need I love it . I do have voyager blades but they are over 15 plus years old and while they are still as functional as they were when they were new especially one called the X2 Voyager as it was then ,these new handle designs are much more grippy and more suited to self defence as well as utility purposes than the ones I have so it looks like I will be getting some more .Keep up the great work I am looking forward to your take on the Vaquero I had one of those too with the serrated edge but never really had a use for it though it is ideal for self defence woe betide you if you ever got found with one over here in the UK ..😀

Been waiting for this series, funny, never got a notice on this video, but I did for the newer vid you released this date. Laws where I dwell sound the same as yours, folders are okay, fixed has to be open carry, length issues vary from city to city. Have you looked into the blade openers made by SnaggleTooth Tactical; I am in love with them for the most part. I have them on my SR-1LITE and 4 MAX Scout. Any other CS's have the Demko type "wave" openers from the factory; I'm a fan of the Spartan's for EDC. I do have my eyes on a Voyager VaqueroXL, just for the fun of it, but that trigger seems to be locked in the safe position. You may change this with this series, only time will tell. Carry On Sir.

@@michaelrizzo5523 The "TOOTH" works very well, in fact after seeing the new Vaquero video, I think I may get one and add the 'tooth', it draws very well that way, or so my other CS's tell me. I found a guy on ETSY, actually 2, that make titanium deep carry pocket clips for a few Cold Steel's, adding those in black, and a tightly tied snake knot lanyard makes drawing the big knives a snap.

Curves in the bellies and the unflattering waistlines - it’s a strong kickoff for 2024, Mike! 👍🏻☺️
With the overall aesthetics of this particular type of folder, I personally lean towards the clip point version; but the basic design seems really well thought out and executed.
One question, considering that extra reach (and thus effective distance) of the XLs: Are there less tears involved when chopping onions?! 😁

You can make 'emerson' style opener with 2 small zipties on the thumbstuds, connected with one thick ziptie above the blade spine. Its a little bit finicky process of tighting them down slowly step by step, since you have to keep pressure on small ones until its all rigid so they dont slip off thumbstuds, while letting them move a bit around so you can keep them positioned properly, but its well worth it.
    (yes, i know about snaggletooth)

State laws here in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia are not the worst I've heard of. Problem is every little Podunk jurisdiction adds their .02¢ to things and hardly ever publishes their ever changing rules so their minions all have an easy time making up rules as they roll merrily along.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  Před 10 dny +1

The tip of the Espada is more acute but has more steel behind it. The Voyager, while broader in tip, thins out a lot. I do prefer the Espada martially. Somewhat better penetration, more belly, more mass, more "hook back" in the clip point. I'd say the Voyager is lighter carry and a little better at utility cutting. Hmmm... I may need to compare these side-by-side.
