Investing heavily in Walmart in the past makes them take risks that they wouldn't have without the investment and they go bankrupt, maybe.
buying stock of a publicly traded company doesn't impact their behavior very much, and at less than 10 cents a share throughout the 70s you wouldn't need THAT many shares to get very rich today.
@@NickHorvath Just FYI, walmart's IPO was 16.50, not 10 cents. Buying $100 worth of stock on Oct 1 of 1970, you would have 6 shares (and $1 left over)....with stock splits, you would have 3072 shares at the current price of 147.04, which is $451,706.88, plus dividends. Which is an 18.35% compounded yearly return over 50 years.
You are correct, buying stock doesn't affect the company whatsoever unless you are major shareholder, since most things are done by vote and 51% are usually retained by executives. Shares sold to market are just investors trading it around a table while it dilutes from dividends, option coverage, and depreciation.
@@sabriath Price history for walmart shows it below 10 cents on both yahoo finance and refinitiv data feeds. This is probably because it's corrected for splits that have occurred. So the effective price for the purpose of figuring out total gain over 50 years is sub 10 cents.
@@NickHorvath .... if you only had $100 to your name, then you can only invest $100 at that time. So if we say "if you had 1,000 shares of WMT at IPO" it isn't $100....it's $16500....which is a LOT of money back then. The median income in 1970 was not quite at $10,000, so you're looking at nearly 2 years worth of income going straight into buying WMT, which is not feasible.
This is why it's important to look at context of pricing properly....at 16.50 per share, you could reasonably afford 6 shares as a longterm "bet" on the stock in 1970. If you were lucky, you might be able to put $500 towards it, but not all families could risk that.
Yahoo and other sites are showing 6 cents, but they only go back to 1972, the proper adjusted price would be nearly 2 cents if you included dividends, or 3.22 cents if you only include splits. This is only used as a multiplicative starting point....meaning, since the stock is at 147, and 147 divided by 0.0322 is 4565.217....then any amount of money you started with in 1970 is multiplied by 4565.217 to get you today's value.
It's all about perspective.
@@sabriath Yes, I agree that $16500 is a lot of money in 1970 (about $110k today), but if you did buy those thousand shares you would wind up with over $75 million today (according to your math). He did say step 1 was to steal a bunch of money to buy the stock with. We're not talking about an investment really, we're talking about a cash multiplier based on future knowledge and time travel. I'm sure given time to research you could find a better investment but for the video walmart served his purpose of being notable and successful.
With regards to the point of this thread, you would need just over 1000 shares to make $100 million which would have no impact on the business of walmart.
PS there's an article on nasdaq.com from last october when wmt was at 120 that says you would only need 5000 to make 74 million, so I'm not sure whose math is wrong. Either way, a significant investment in 1970 would net lots of money today.
Welcome back. We've missed you.

"Here is a simplified food web for more information"
Thanks, that definitely simplified it... xD
Extremely searchable title.
"You have a time machine and you want to make the world a better place. What do you do?"
> kill hitler?
"no save the fishies ~"
I'm glad to hear that in the future your terminator robots use sustainable practices for whale oil.
Love this channel, been subscribed for years, great to see new videos again
Yeah I've been holding on ever since the first few videos I'm really glad to see him gaining steam
I think all of us came from *that* video
Somehow I feel like this video is subtly directly towards the Lobster kerfuffle
occurring right now in Nova Scotia- very nice video btw
I dont even remember subscribing to you but im not complaining
Right?
probably from the dolly zoom video, as vsauce signal boosted it
Oh Dear Jesse. This Place is so good. I keep telling people how the fisheries economics are the most complex yet still understandable to learn about humans and their economics.
...what? No, humans are NOT fish...
My God I just discovered this channel and it needs way more of everything ads, subs, Patrons we need more content!!!
The youtube algorythm needs to push your videos again
Ahaha almost forgot about that little detail at the start
every time you upload im like "yep this is my favorite channel"
As a Newfoundlander, i loved this video. Balanced, educated, wise. Excellent as always, ThisPlace. I've killed uncountable babies based on your advice :)
lol. Someone's going to take this comment out of context when you run for office
@@ThisPlaceChannel ..And he would win
@5:40, "beep-boop" killed me! :D
This channel is criminally undersubscribed.
??? How come it took me SO LONG to find THIS PLACE! Wow. This is GOOD. Informative, engaging, and humorous.
I really hoped you don't get discouraged by the low view counts, your videos are absolutely phenomenal.
This is the most subestimated CZcams Channel, seriously, it's just pure gold.
He has returned! Along with all the Grand Banks Cod. What a coincidence!
Haha, i wonder what the detailed food web looks like.
Your obsession with the grand banks cod led me to write an essay on Locke's property rights and cod stocks in Canada and Norway
Any place I can read it?
He brought the intro back!
Your intro has always been my favorite!
I must admit, I didn't see that twist coming but I'm grateful it happened because I was getting worried you'd advocate for bigger corporations or something.
Great to see one of the best creators on youtube back! I hope a lot more of your former audience (such as myself) will rediscover you, as youtube did not notify me of this video.
"Then they added more months to the year to really try to twist that knife."
Hold up, can you expand on this? What months are R, W, and P? When and how did the year have 15 months? Why can't I find anything about this on Google? Or is this some kind of joke that's going over my head?
Also searching for this online, have not found anything. I even read "Who Killed the Grand Banks" by Rose
“Real World Problems”
Your videos always remind me that education and fun problems like these... can and *are* fun
Like everyday after school I hate learning, I hate myself, and I hate assignments. But seeing and answering random hypothetical questions for fun makes me remember that it's the educational system I hate, not education itself.
Seemingly unrelated problem that turns out to be universal in today’s politicos, ecology, etc etc. Your work is great! This is how real knowledge is made
A while back, I noticed that the original Grand Banks video that you made had been "relocated" on CZcams. I am wondering about the cause of that displacement. That video is priceless.
He said on his twitter that it got flagged by CZcams.
A sequel to one of the best videos on the internet. A pretty great way to start my morning!!
Can't believe the views are so low, this content is A+++
I love this channel
These videos are always worth the wait
Fantastic video! I remember stumbling across your videos when I was studying policy making in college. It was great seeing discussion of policy boiled down into such a clear and funny manner.
Missed that old intro, love the video ❤️
Just watched your old cod video uploaded to another channel, it was really good.
why can't we "just leave things alone for a couple of decades"? is what i am asking myself everytime i look at nature...
I apologise for commenting before I have seen the video, but there has been the same number of videos released from this channel in the last four months as there have in the past three years, and they're all held to a very high quality!
If you don't mind me asking, what brought about this change in pace? A university degree coming to terms which enabled more free time, just pure motivation being found again, or something regarding coronavirus and very few time-based commitments?
Cheers
Jet
Love that background music!
I miss This Place.
your animations give me life
I love your animation style! Somehow it really fits your voice
I am glad, that you returned!
You are awesome! Thanks for the video
This was awesome
God, i love these videos oh so much
This Place taught me science.
Please come backkk!
Oh my god you’re back
hell yeah! full intro!
I could listen to this voice all day long
love the new intro!
it's quite an old intro actually
Awesome!
omg youre back!!!
New "This Place" video showing the catastrophic effects of unjustified heirarchies on the day after the birthday of legendary chad Peter Kropotkin, who had something to say about unjustified heirarchies?! Coincidence?!
Yes.
Yay!! A new one!
This channel is fucking random.... and I love it!
Here's how everything could work and be sustainable:
Governments and alike:
"Yeeaah... Im just gonna hide these number and keeping doing my shit like a focking donkey"
Does commenting improve traction? If so, please comment more everyone!
There's more cod out there than you can shake a stick at
damn the uncanny valley vid was 4 months ago? felt like a few weeks ago
I've been subscribed (with bell icon set to "all") forever, but I never seem to get notifications anymore. Emails have definitely stopped for all but 2 channels I follow. Sad to see what CZcams is doing to creators
Which of your references is related to the decentralized decision making you talked about? I'd like to read up more on that.
"Use of knowledge in society" by Hayek may not be exactly that, but it's a very close topic. And it's an amazing read overall.
Fucking savage analogy, my guy.
Aaa I missed your vids
Got'em with classic brick joke
Pleaaaaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeeeeeeee rerelease the original cod video. I loved it so much )))))::::::
Only Anarcho-Robotism can save the cod

I dare not like this video, for it has been liked four hundred and twenty times.
Well I, for one, welcome our Department of Human Eradication overlords.

I was expecting an Express VPN plug at the end there, lol
We should apply this to how we handle pandemics
Commenting for the Algorithm. All hail the mighty algorithm
hail the algorithm
Yay place
Of course the problem, unfortunately now more than then (I presume), is that all the stakeholders have to TRUST what the others, particularly their scientists and leaders, are saying and recommending. No. Small. Feat.
Grand Banks? More like Bland Banks am I right?
Widely disruption event happening in health and/or environment *exists*
Politicians first concern: Oh no, the economy.
Perhaps
Easy. Just have a scientific committee estimate the quota and auction the fishing certificates. I am good at this. I should be made king for everything.
The department of human eradication
(and the environment)
Ok i don’t know why I missed this video but your tweet on woman eggs brought me here
Big robo will rule the world.
i only just discovered this channel and it has a worrying lack of subscribers
noice
tragedy of the commons.
cod...
c...od
call of duty?
Lousy Pemtober weather...
renamed the 'department of human eradication. and environment'. hahahahaha!
you could just nationalize the fishing industry so you don’t overfish
I would leave the fish alone, invest in all tech giants and then eradicate humans as well, the fish would thank me later.
Why not just make more cod roboti- *cough* I mean efficiently.
