The sky is blue. Why isn't everything blue?

  • Why is the sky blue? Why isn’t everything blue as a result? Why is it whiter near the horizon? Why does the sky get orange at sunrise and sunset?
    (at 6:46 it says "molecules" should say "droplets". A bunch of water molecules together behave as a larger thing)

    Other notes
    All the experts and scholory articles I looked at stated both rayleigh and mie scattering as responsible for the whiter horizon. That there are 2 explanations feels inelegant but I couldn’t find that one of them was false. I suspect each one is more dominant under different conditions.

      That last bit felt like a blatant critique/satire, more than anything.
      Notably (and only partially), a jab at the fact, that it's not the science part that should get you worried, but their influence over your opinions about unrelated stuff, that you should be wary of.
      Like, the fact, that even this video itself is an attempt to shape your opinion of a situation/behavior of other pop science creators.

    • @donatodiniccolodibettobardi842
      @donatodiniccolodibettobardi842 Před 5 lety +11

      But it got me thinking. I am indeed lazy enough to not source through all of that science, even with -seemingly- simple and easily verifiable stuff, like this. And despite what my brain may tell me I can be -easily- fooled and misinformed in -many- some instances. And despite of that, I'd likely still watch this and other pop-science CZcams channels and read articles.
      I know of this inherent vulnerability in this relationship and the fact, that was brought up by Veritasium (and others, before and after), that good entertainment piece about science and a good educational piece are not only entirely different things, but also often end up in direct conflict with each other. So, that's a tightrope walking between being fun and beneficial. Pop science doesn't make me smart, doesn't make better at science, and data in simplified form doesn't necessarily makes me more knowledgeable about the facts, as I may misinterpret or misremember the information (that may already be wrong).
      And still, I'd likely do nothing about it in an immediate future, putting me at the mercy of fallible content creators, trends and algorythms and I am the only one to blame for it.
      Probably, getting personally informed about a particular topic, being trained in skepticism and critical thinking might be not as exciting, like having a wealth of background trivia, but likely - much more useful. Knowing a piece of data, easily ingestable from a video piece isn't as useful, as being skilled at interpreting statistical data or knowing your ways in and out of science paper without making dangerous shortcuts.
      Although, easier said, than done.

  • @metametodo
    @metametodo Před 5 lety +15

    I've checked many science videos on my journey through youtube, and although I had already seen people explaining things like "why the sky is blue", some things about the Rayleigh effect, and more, I kept watching videos on the topic. And today, after many videos on the topic, I came here for another one. And it's amazing. It's definitely the most complete yet concise, and simple yet beautiful video I've ever seen on this general topic. I feel weird giving compliments based on what many could see as just a "single dumb video", but I really don't feel that way.
    The best part of this was the ending. I can't prove for certain that you're trustworthy, but I may have hundreds of signs that give you a positive mark. Requesting scientific views and daily observations from every person in the society is a central aspect. Another is doubting yourself, and to me, the way you did that was quite genuine. My background and previous learnings support the trustworthiness of your teachings. And your history on this channel also brings positive marks, and so does the sources on the description. We're all imperfect, and we change. So you don't have my trust guaranteed for eternity, but you're doing a very good job on this, and I believe that if you keep doing what you do the ways you do you may keep going far and maintain general trust and integrity.
    So really, thanks, you teached me a lot, you showed me strong signs of scientific values, while also demonstrating some level of humility. Which also taught, and strengthened me. Have a good day, and thanks for this smile you put on my face while writing this.

    Great video, but you completely missed a big aspect of this- our brains.
    Things in shadow ARE blue as a result of the sky being blue, but we don't perceive that as blue because our brain does an internal "white-balance correction" so that we perceive the true colors rather than the color cast from the sky.
    If you go out on a clear sunny day (with lots of blue sky), it's not too difficult to see that things in the shade actually do look pretty blue.

  • @MuffinMachine
    @MuffinMachine Před 3 lety +2

    in a book called “understanding light for visual artists” by Richard Yot it is also explained that shadows cast during daytime (with a relatively clear sky) will appear to be blue. this is because a tree (or a house, or a non-transparent elephant) is blocking the direct sunlight and only the indirect colors cast from the sky will come into the shadow area. therefore things actually are more blue we just don’t usually see it that way because our brains filter the blue to ascertain that the grass is still green. so while the sky isn’t quite a neon lamp it bounces its color onto other surfaces like any other surface. Weakly but definitely. this is however still the best representation i have seen of why the sky is blue. I don’t need a toothbrush. Just bought one.
