I'm honestly surprised that the Darkest Faerie is still relevant towards people.
I *LOVE* this game. Even with its clunkiness, it's actually the very first fantasy game I've played. It introduced me to the Neopets website, and then eventually I fell in love with the franchise as a whole. Ever since I played the game, I was fascinated as to of how fantasy worlds are like, including the Medieval Era/Middle Ages.
Even as to of today, I still love this game as a whole. 4/5 for nostalgia, and the reason why that it isn't a 5/5 is because that I was stuck on Act 3 for many years until I decided to play it again for my own.
But I will agree with the 2/5.
As always, you did a wonderful job on reviewing this!

Damn I remember playing this when I was 9, i was just enthralled by the setting and it was one of the only games I had that had a semi open world (besides the first Jak and Daxter game). I remember having no memory c ard, so i'd go run through it for a few hours and then turn the system off having to redo my progress. because of this i never really got through act 1, but hell it was still fun. I'd run through it to see how fast i can go through, i guess it being indirectly one of my first steps to liking speedrunning. I've recently run through it again and I agree that the controls are crunchy but you can tell that the devs actually attempted to make a solid game set in the neopets universe and to tell a decent story that kids would be drawn to. my scroe for it would be a 3/5, because it isn't perfect and you can argue that it isn't even good, but damn its fun and it does what it is set out to do.

I have pretty much the same opinion, the game should be terrible with all its bugs and glitches, but the game just has a charm to it that is hard to explain, I have played through the game about 3.5 times, there are AAA titles that I play through and have no desire to revisit, but for some reason this game managed to hook me back in

"4 months after the game's launch Altador was finally unfrozen and added to the Neopet's map." I lost my shit when you said this. I never knew this was a thing. About 5 years back in my first year of college I found myself randomly getting a nostalgic itch to play NP again. To my surprise an active player was also in the room with me. We later discovered we had a hell of a lot in common thus we started dating. At the time she was good for me, but as most relationships in college go it didn't last very long or end very well. That being said I started the Altador plot during this time, I didn't touch the game again for a least 2 years after the break up. I was determined to finish the plot line of Altador and for months I refused to look up a guide checking almost daily in the freaking observatory for those god damn constellations. Eventually I gave in and was able to complete the plot line with the help of a guide and getting to the end felt good. Not great, but satisfactory, I felt like I finally completed one of those remnants from my childhood. Now I just gotta do that with the entire Kingdom Hearts before 3 comes out this year and Dot Hack some time in the future too.
I watched this video thinking back to those days I revisited Neopets and thought to myself, "Holy shit, I'm glad I never discovered this game." I'm a bit of a completionist too so I can imagine the shit storm that would have ensued upon realizing the flaws of this game. Though, I can say without a doubt I'm glad I didn't stop watching this video half way through. You are truly an entertaining CZcamsr. You go to extreme lengths to really give these games the credit they deserve, even with terribly designed games or just plain mediocre. Thank you.

I can’t believe I never noticed you made a Darkest Faerie video. This is one of my all-time “favorites” (in terms of sentimental value) and I’ve replayed it so many times. I think one of the most frustrating things is how much love and attention was given to the aesthetic, lore, and experience of Neopets but the devs clearly just didn’t have the time to finish things up.
Weird combat aside, the game is full of glitches to the point that’s it’s guaranteed any player will come across a few, whether it’s the music cutting out, the darkness/corruption effect just not clearing up after you save places, unclear progression, and game breaking save points. There are also sooo many parts towards the end that just feel unfinished, like there was supposed to be more there but there wasn’t.
Despite that it’s really charming and genuinely fun. I wish it had become a franchise or something just so that we could get some kind of remaster or remake that polishes it up.

I'm a bit late to this, but here is a quick summary of my views on the game. I wasn't that aware of the Neopets before getting the game for my birthday as a kid, and I never got around to finishing it. When I was in high school I finally finished the entire game and thought it was fun. Both protagonists were fine, but I wish we got more to do solely as Robertta before she met Tor. My biggest complaint is that there are too many "points of no return" in that once you start a mission or fight you cant go back. There were also way too many armor and weapon upgrades to purchase, a few glitches throughout the game, and I do wish there had been a fash travel in the game because traveling acorss the entire world took too long. That said, I did like the story and the various locations to explore. As a kid I avoided reading the books all over the place, but replaying the game I did and saw how much backstory and tips they provided. I also liked the various different kinds of enemies to fight and liked the twist near the end of the game. The boss fights for the most part were enjoyable but I am split on the Darkest fairy herself as a villain. Overall, I'm glad I finally played the game and finally finished it.

Hah, this entire video is a mood. I actually obtained this game during my childhood, and terrible production value be damned, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Every now and then I even go back to it to annihilate it with my SUPERIOR TACTICS. As poor of quality as most of the game is, it's a genuinely enjoyable experience nonetheless. Not to mention they really nailed some aspects that still have an effect on my own ideas years later. The dark areas are genuinely creepy, with some very consistent auditory cues and effects that really unsettle you.
When the sound engine works, anyway.
(This is also the game that really made me like element systems. They're fun.)

I beat this game in its entirety when I was younger. Super unpolished and terrifying at times since my only exposure to Neopets lore was through McDonald's toys and the occasional Neopets internet game (ice dungeon platformer anyone?), but overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable romp through a land that was surprisingly vast. Seriously though, the swamp and overrun cities of evil nasties were a lot for my small brain to handle at times!

What if you had passed that swamp, played as the girl, fell from the sky, lost your mentor, beat almost every boss, sent to get 3 medicine to cure the guy who would fix the bridge before the final boss. Except the third medicine around a snake boss.
Aaaahhhh the snake boss! How do even damage him? If he’s not coming close and surrounded by shallow water.
Well you shield his headbutt attack to knock him!? The game tells you that clearly but we couldn’t f$k@?g understand it! why??

You know there actually WAS Neopets cereal. It was called Islandberry Crunch and it tasted sort of like fruity pebbles.
I wasn't allowed to have a video game console back when The Darkest Faerie came out so I never got to play it. I might load it through an emulator eventually though. I played the demo for it (and the demo for Petpet Adventures) sooo much back in the day.
I still play Neopets to this day but it's a shadow of its former self. But on a positive note, their most recent management already seems to be a step up from the last one (who fired like 90% of the staff and couldn't get their shit together after the servers got moved--there were about 2 years of permanent lag). They already released new merch and re-started one of the contests that previously had to be shut down due to lack of resources. They upped the pet cap from 4 to 5 (or 5 to 6 in the case of premium members), upped the shop price cap from 99k to 999k, Holidays/events seem to have been coming out on time more frequently, etc. I'm afraid the site will die in 2020 when Flash gets killed off though and this is basically its last hurrah. They have some HTML5 elements here and there around the site but nothing major and there's no way for them to convert everything at this point, especially considering how short-staffed and under-funded it seems to be.

    NEOPETS, FUCK YEAH.
It was absolutely my shit as a kid, and I still play it to this day. I will never not be bitter at Viacom for milking it dry, letting it stagnate, then selling it cheap once people stopped playing it because it refused to improve. :| Screw you, Viacom.
This game was _massively_ important to Neopets lore. Aside from being a cross‐media event that’s still referenced to this day-The Darkest Faerie (spoilers!) was the antagonist of the most recent plot that just wrapped last month(!)-it revealed Altador, which then next year launched the Altador Cup, a massive Olympics‐style event that still takes over the site every year to this day! The Darkest Faerie was even going to have a _movie_ before the financing fell through. It wasn’t even likely to be _good,_ and I’m still crushed that it never got made.
People who weren’t kids back in the early 2000s have no idea how massive and influential to the internet Neopets was. I know people who credit Neopets for their entire careers; artists who got their start submitting fanart to official contests on the site for Neopoints, programmers who first looked up how to put HTML together to make their profile prettier, etc.
The site’s still alive today, even if barely (it’s fallen so far it’s now owned by a Chinese MMO factory), and we have a vibrant community on Reddit over at /r/neopets. If you want to reexplore your childhood (or see what you missed), it’s still as fun to play as ever. :) The Altador Cup is just about to start this year! GO TEAM FAERIELAND!

      Multiple games actually!
There was also Petpet Adventures: Wand of Wishing for PSP, Puzzle Adventure for nintendo DS & PC, Quizara for the Leapfrog Didji (a kids handheld learning thing), the first mobile version of the site (for flip phones), Ghoul Catchers for android & ios (a simple match-3 clone, currently still out and trucking), Treasure Keepers the Facebook game, and a series of handhelds that had physical neopets you put into slots to play minigames. There was also a board game, puzzles, and 2 kinds of interactives (plastic and plush)
Neopets was an entire empire in its heyday. There was so much merchandise in pretty much any form you could imagine. It's kind of sad to see how far it's fallen (but they also just released new merch for the first time in a long time--enamel pins!). It's uncertain if it'll die or not when Flash gets killed in a few years.

The drackonack Quest can only be finished in Act 1, and not in act 3 because Merridell is under the Darkest Faerie’s control. Your supposed to keep hunting and giving him fangs in Act 1 until he tells you to stop, and then the quest will finish and be off the quest log. He gets mad because the quest cannot be completed anymore, and Merridell isn’t freed from the Darkest Faerie.

Also the skull quest can only be finished in Act 1 as well; You get the skull from the tomb near Illusen’s glade, then go back to Merridell in Act 1, then she gives you the reward, and the quest is finished. Any quest you receive in Merridell should be completed in Act 1, because otherwise Merridell is under the Darkest Faerie’s control, and the characters are cursed. Even if you talked to the lady, the quest would not be completed because you can’t finish it in Act 3, you have to do it in Act 1.

Regardless, I love this game and have finished it probably more than anything else I own, cause it's so short and pretty easy to run through

I somehow managed to catch this game right when it came out, despite never having heard of neopets beyond perhaps the faint schoolground whisper. I was literally at Walmart with my mom who said "alright, pick out any one game you want." and that just so happened to catch my eye. I don't know why, perhaps the Gods of Gaming decided it was to be, but it was a wonderful decision. I had so much fun with that game, despite the many troubles, too, and will always remember it as a piece of my childhood.

  • @AustinD_YT
    @AustinD_YT Před 4 lety

Nostalgia is always stronger than clunkiness. I was born in 2002, and didn't get into video games until i was almost 10, and i started out with my older brothers playstation 2. I never played this game, but i've always had a wonder for these "legends among gaming" I.e. Super mario 64, ocarina of time, and those other games. And well, when it came around to playing them in the past couple years now that i have my own money and can buy the original consoles, Ive found that alot of the glory and shine these games are given aren't as easy for me to see. Super Mario 64, with its fun, is also fairly clunky with a wretched camera that made me feel like i was wrestling the game just to see where I was going, and to do moves correctly. Yet, despite the gaming flaws, its praised as a sort of "God" of gaming. And honestly, ive felt it recently with Kingdom hearts. I played the original Kingdom Hearts on the ps2 and well, i never beat it, but I always looked back on it as a good game just a hard game. Going back to such an old game now, through the remake for the ps4, I realized how clunky it actually was. Yet it was still enjoyable because of the nostalgia.
Tl;dr, Nostalgia blind is a real thing, and can make even the clunkiest of games seem like a modern master piece.

  • @gamesketch
    @gamesketch Před 5 lety

I was but a small child who didn't even have internet or previous knowledge of this universe when my parent's bought me this game so I would stop playing Medal of Honor - Frontline.
Similar to my experience with Kingdom Hearts 1, I loved every moment of the story and any character death, no matter how little they were on screen beforehand, completely devastated me for no reason. I was fucking invested in this game entirely. My most vivid memory was farming light motes from a building in the final area of the game. Why? I couldn't tell you.
What was most likely clunky controls, I chocked up to my inability to be good, and I would slam my head against the wall until I prevailed over every encounter. This was basically my childhood dark souls.
The only disappointment I had with this game whatsoever was how the final fight ended. I think I hit a switch or something and a cutscene played that I do not remember at all and I guess I won. That was more than just a little disappointing to me, I was wanting yet another battle where I would die 10 times, give up, but finally push through and prevail over true evil after a short moment of respite.
So yeah, that's my experience with this game in it's entirety through dumbass 10-12 year old eyes. Perfect 10/10. And NO, this game doesn't make you a furry, don't believe their lies. Just play it, don't worry about it.

This is actually my second favorite game of all time, mostly for the nostalgia and heroics. It may not be so focused on the graphics and mechanics, but if you pay attention to the story and creativity, it's beautiful. I still think about this game often, and even had actual DREAMS about it which both brought me back to playing it, and left me curious if, "there's more to it than meets the eye." Maybe the beggar wasn't just talking about the amulet he handed to Tor PFFT
But yeah, I'm still hopeful to see either a sequel to the game, or a complete remaster to fix things up. Would be a childhood dream come true.
If I had to give it a rating, I'd say an easy 4.5/5 for giving me something to enjoy as a kid, despite all the other games that had better graphics and such. Was just unique in its own way.
And I'll admit, I was horrified in some parts of the game. Especially when monsters would attack you through the ground and screech loud enough to make me run for my parents to help me progress through the game HAHAA
