In this video I show the propper way to set up the surpluss military canvas pup tent, shelter half. This is not to say that other methods are wrong but this is the way that the tent was designed to be setup quickly and preciesly for military encampments. In the military it is required that the tents are all setup covered and alighned perectly, so using any other method lacks the exact precision and speed of this one. enjoy the video and I hope your next camping session goes smoothly and safetly.

Each soldier was issued one half of the tent; hence it is called the shelter half. Each grunt had three-piece tent pole, and 4 tent pegs. When put together it was big enough for two men. I left the Army with both halves, and used it camping well into the 1990';s. Used a rub on oil/wax to keep it water proof. A complete tent was big enough for me to be quite comfortable. When the kids were old enough to go camping with me I went with family size tent. I miss my pup tent.

Ive had this last through an almost hurricane type wind and downpour red dot on the weather map direct hit blow through on a big lake. Other regular tents got blown down and drenched. All my gear and blaket were dry and the army tent was still standing. The wind and downpour was very strong though so there was actually just a little bit of water which got in right down the center line. Years before this recent blast i came to understand how great this tent was the first time i ever slept in it and it downpoured but inside it was dry and comfy as a bone.

I pulled out my old musty pup tent and wanted a tutorial because I always set it up wrong! I don't remember being taught how to set up a pup tent, officially. I think we were given our 1/2 & were supposed to just know. I'm sure we were taught though, just along with so much other stuff I can't remember learning but, know how to do.

I've never seen the 1 pole section overlap technique before. Interesting. I used shelter half's in the Army until the early 90's when we switched to the smaller GP Small team tents. I always just staked one side, then put the poles in and pulled/staked the second half. I'm always surprised how many people don't realize that there are two parts to the shelter half and we each carried 1 half LOL But one of my boy scouts picked up a set and has been using that all spring and summer and loves it. I've always been an old Canvas guy. My favorite sound in the world is rain on canvas. But it does get heavy. I am working on some of my own bedroll straps, so that timing of the video is perfect. Thanks!!!

I remember back in my time (army not marines but my father was a navy Corpsman attached to the Marines back in the early 70s so mad respect to ya) we were constantly tinkering with our gear to get a little more out of it than government Issue. One thing was we would have cordage wrapped around what looked like a little two blade propellor. Two threaded into the bottom of your tent pole (there was a small space carved into it in the center and a matching bulge on the opposite side ) helped it on soggy and loose ground).
Furthermore in anticipation of have odd numbers assigned to any group one person in 4-5 was assigned a double set which meant if unneeded you had a ground cloth of the perfect size and the triangle pieces on the ends could be pulled up and hung from the pole for a better weather seal. There is also a way to merge three tents together into a Y shape so that the gear can be piled in the center and the shared body heat of three (or in the military,6) can provide more collective warmth
It’s also possible to fashion ridge poles out of the appropriate materials

thank you very much for this tutorial. I saw the "Corporal's Corner" showing that one pole fold trick but I didn't know you could also embed the guyline between the snaps.

Nicely done! I like the European shelters, just because they can also be used as a poncho, but I DID pick up this bug net.
It’s a great addition to a shelter, but on a hot dry night it’s good on its own (suspended from a ridge line, two is better, and staked out) and it’s pretty good as a blind for deer hunting. Netting is real useful and it’s often overlooked.

they are new original stock or new old stock depending on who you ask

I got them from my army vet friend who I was helping today go through his boxes of military equipment

I found some pics years ago showing 3 full tents/6 1/2 set up for 6 people.
You put up 4 half in a square and one full tent on top. The snaps along the bottom of the top tent attach to the top of the lower sections. You have to provide tall poles for the inside or build an external frame from poles to hold it up.
It's kinda hard to explain but it makes it square and about 6ft center height.

Do you have both halves cause it takes 2 halves to make a whole tent I believe

I always love the idea of this kind of canvas classic tent, but it's so redundant with modern materials, even a cheap landscaping tarpaulin is more water resistant and lighter than this.

      @MakersMovementDIY  Před 3 lety +1

Definately not the best choice of material these days, but the nostalgia of it makes canvas and leather my choice, if i don't have to carry it too far.

Hahah right, but then you have to drag around both halfs. A single makes a great lean to shelter.

@@Sage-qd6tf I'm planning to go out this weekend with a friend so if everything goes as planned, tune in here at 1830 PST on Sunday. I'll set up the shelter half lean-to as a super shelter and show it on the Sunday live program. Then it will be a quite comfortable shelter even in the winter.

You failed to mention that these tents were built in two styles.....button or snaps. The two don’t work together! What’s with the tattoos?
