Do not sign the check until you have filled the rest of the check out....once you sign it is a negotiable financial instrument and people can write any amount they want in it, and you will not be able to get the money back. So no matter what anyone tells you, never sign a blank check.
Unless you're at the grocery store and they can print the exact amount on it for you. Just make sure it is the right amount. We don't want to wait for you to fill out a check when we're 4 customers backed up.

Checks can be valid WITHOUT a signature! All the payee needs to do on the back is write the words ABSENCE OF SIGNATURE GUARANTEED and then endorse with either signature or utilize a for deposit only stamp!

I actually tried to learn this when I was younger but said they were not allowed to teach it or needed permission.
I rarely write checks. I always use online bill pay from my bank to pay utilities and expenses.
