@@duringthemeanwhilst I'm good thanks, 5 years on from a Prostate cancer diagnosis at 42 and my cycling gets stronger and stronger. You you could say i've been bitten by the bug, so much so that I've recently expanded my bike collection to include some vintage 1980's steel. Unfortunately there are no visible serial numbers or pantographs on the frame to identify the builder but it is stacked full of top level gear including Cinelli Criterium bars and stem, Fiamme wheelset and a near full Campagnolo 50th Anniversary groupset. The frame only has Campagnolo decals on it ?? and also the correct Reynolds 531 Professional decals for the frame and forks. The bike in full (minus saddle) weighs in at 7.7kg. With doubt about who the builder is i'd love to at least confirm that the frame is indeed 531Pro. Do you know of any indications, other than the weight of the frame, that can help me pin down this bike as 531 Pro??

@@markpitkin6818 glad to hear that :-)
Reynolds 531 Pro - no distinguishing visual features sadly. It is slightly lighter than normal 531 tubing - that's about it.
As far as identifying your frame, look for things like fancy lugwork or the way the seat stays join the top / down tubes, look on websites such as Classic Lightweights and see if there's anything similar.
Other than that, you could try posting an image on one of the lightweight frame web forums and see if anyone can identify it.
Sorry I can't help any more than that.
      Keep riding, Nick

Nice job , I`ve built quite a few 531 / 753 Peugeots and had a couple of ex pro bikes. Interesting because Peugeot Pro team used 753 as well as 531pro .As far as the steel frames go , the pro team actually rode the `pro10 model` which was never sold by the UK franchisee ( Cycles Peugeot UK ) although it you check the catalogues for France, Germany, Belgium etc, it featured as the top of the range steel bike and is mainly distinguished by its full chrome rear triangle. These were built by the craftsmen that were originally in the Peugeot Prestige frameshop that closed in 1983 ( Peugeots equivalent of Raleighs SBDU ) . The steel bikes were preferred for the criteriums , the continental classics and some TDF stages , Robert Millar used both the pro10 and the PY10FC for his famous mountain stages. Being picky your rainbow decals are from a later period and slightly narrower than the 83-87 decals and the forks dont seem original but only an anorak would notice !

I had one of those bikes from 1990 to 2002 and recklessly sold it on ebay for very little. Only thing I had changed was white seat to a leather brook's and put look peddles on it. Only main difference I noted was my forks were only 531 competition and the black paint looked a bit more metallic. That said you done a neat job on your lock down project

thanks Andy. I much prefer the look of older bikes. I had the frame resprayed but in exactly the same colour as originally on the bike (I remember my late friend getting it from new). Looking at the catalogue, the frame looks a lot lighter than in the flesh though. I've just finished building the bike I raced on in the 80s - a 531 Major Nichols. I might do a video on that one day.

Beautiful bike and a great video. Thanks for putting that together. Can you tell me anything about the Peugeot frame which is hanging on the wall behind you in this video? I had a 753 Peugeot frame in the late 80s which I (and more accurately my local bike shop) built up into a fantastic lightweight racer, then foolishly sold without even a photo of it. Now regretting that immensely and trying to figure out what the frame was in an attempt to recreate it. Colour wise, it looked awfully like the frame behind you on the wall. Have you any videos of that? Many thanks again.

No sorry, I don't have any info on what your bike might have been. My Peugeot is a 531Pro tubeset, so 1 below 753.

You have a new subscriber 😃
I've just watched your Nikon D700 in 2020 and decided to trawl your channel when I came across this video.
We are fellow Welshmen with a love for photography and bikes.
I started riding with the Menai CTC back in 84 at the age of 16 on a cheap Sun 5 speed which I started to upgrade until I came across a Bob Jackson Merlin road bike for £200 at my local bike shop.
531 throughout with suntour Superb brakes, TA Tevano chainset, Zeus 2000 rear mech, campag Gran Sport front mech, Record hubs and seatpin. Cinelli bars and stem.
So a mish mash of all sorts but a beautiful bike to ride.
The D700 is a camera I'm interested in, that or the D7000 to replace a D3000 I bought in error and ignorance 5 years ago. I paid £117 for it and it came with a manual 35-80 mm (f1.4.5 ?).
The pictures were awful just like the disposable cardboard camera's we had in the 80's. 😦😄.
So I stopped using it until recently.
I did have a Practika SLR which I upgraded to a Chinon CG5 in the late 80's, so I do have experience, but DSLR's to me are a whole new world.
So I got it out and watched CZcams channels to familiarise myself with it.
The picture quality is still poor and I have just found out that the lens is a pile of poo. Should I just change the lens?
I was thinking of doing product photography and if so, what cheap lens would you recommend?
    I hope your well.

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst  Před 3 lety +1

hello and thanks for the lovely comment :-)
always good to have a fellow countryman on board too!
the lens you mentioned is not one I've ever come across so can't comment sorry.
on the camera front, the D700 and D7000 are quite different cameras - the 700 being a full frame sensor while the 7000 is a crop sensor.
if you want to do product photography then I'd step towards something with a higher resolution so you can crop in as necessary without losing too much data. while the D700 is excellent, at 12MP I'd question whether for product photography it would be the best choice. perhaps someone who reads this might be able to advise better than I can.
a lens I can recommend that is not too expensive is the Nikon 105mm f2.8. there are 'D' and 'G' variants - the 'D' being less expensive. they have 1:1 macro capability so you can get in nice and close with good magnification of your subject. although they are full frame lenses they can be used on a crop sensor camera and should give you great results. neither are "cheap" but to get the best results I'd stay away from budget lenses - especially older cheap ones.
product photography depends a lot on how you light things as well, and you'd need a good natural light source or good artificial lighting to yield the best results.
sorry this is a bit long winded!!

@@duringthemeanwhilst No, no not at all and thank you so much for your reply.
So the 16 MP D7000 would be the better choice overall and for just over £200 on ebay seems ideal.
I can pick up the 105mm lens from Japan for £150 with £20 shipping.
Thank you sir and all the best.

@@badger67 I don’t think you’d notice that much of a difference between 12 and 16mp to be honest. And if your choice is limited to a D700 or D7000 I’d go for the 700 every time. With the 105 lens it’s a really good combo.

When you originally resprayed your bike, what did you use for replacing the decals? did you use waterslides? I am in the process of restoring my frame atm, but the suggested vinyles have a really crappy edge on them…

    • @duringthemeanwhilst
      @duringthemeanwhilst  Před 3 lety +2

      hi
I left it all to the painter I'm afraid. I assume he sourced the transfers from his supplier. Unfortunately he is no longer in business.
Looking at the finish, I would think they are waterslides as there is no discernible edge to any of the transfers under the clear coat.
If you are in the UK you could try contacting Bob Jackson Cycles - they do some fantastic restoration work and may be able to point you in the right direction of some better quality items?
