Indeed. It's very touching. And, I am happy too seeing him find solace in pottery. All the best.

Whye Kee is able to put his leadership skills to good use in his volunteer work. I can respect that.
If he open a Durian company he can also do very well
Can see his leadership qualities. If put to correct use, he has great potential
@Lianghua Qingwen what makes you so sure? Indian Malay all Singaporean. We are great like this.

He is living proof that you can always climb back up and turn your life around, no matter how despairingly deep the hole you have dug for yourself feels like.
It's the war effects.
Fear, and create fear, beating others to feel powerful was the fashion, whoever won gets to hold position in power or favoured by power.
It's the mindset that's spread all over different levels of the society with designed social structure.
Society just needs to give them a chance.

This is so heart warming and sad all at the same time, having to journey through your darkest days just to get to a ‘better tomorrow’. Whye Kee is a brave man for journeying through that darkest period and making that life-changing choice.
Lies again? Serie A Leader Get Laid
That's not darkness, that's like fighting club, whoever won, gets money and power.
And, yeah, that's good he can get over the desire for more and live a simple life
Ya man
Glad his darkest time is over
As the saying goes- just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly. Whye Kee's story demonstrates that life is a process of growth, change and emergence.
Metamorphosis ❤
Beautiful story. Great job VICE Asia for covering this in Singapore and Whye Kee for contributing back to society and being a great role model.
All the respect to you, Whye Kee. Having grown up in the Yuhua community area myself, where CIDs frequented my school on a weekly basis, I know how tumultuous that period was around the Jurong area. Hai Kim kias pretty much ruled that area and a number of my class mates were part of the gang. If I had mentioned their names I am pretty sure you would know them :). Great to see you turning a new leaf and contributing to society. Keep up the good work and and never say die spirit bro!
“You would know them” is that a threat?😟

Wow, thank you for sharing your story. So glad that you turned around. More people need to hear of your story. May you press on to live life on the straight and narrow..
Yeah, he is being mindful, that's a big progress in life
I am glad Whye Kee was given the opportunity to be involved in community work without discrimination. I pray more will be gracious and give those who have a bad past a second and third chance. Where there is life, there is hope when opportunity is given.
Yes I agree. It pays to commit crimes and later when you reform people will praise you for being a good role model and you get to appear on CZcams and be famous. :)
@@schadenfreude6274 You sad, sad human being. May you find happiness one day.
@@potatoes926 No, I don't think I will. F*ck my mother for it. :)
Very heart warming to hear your story, Whye Kee. Your bravery and openness to share your past stories is commendable. I truly hope your story will move and inspire others not to give up if they have failed anything in life. I wish you all the good things and happiness for you, and may you continue to inspire others!
Thanks
I think the way that he became helpful to the community is the family support that he has so that he can get out of his old ways. Kudos to Whye Kee for sharing your life story
I used to be in the 369 gang. I thought I was a gangster because I feel welcomed at a time where I felt estranged from everyone I love. Then I saw my gang members beat up a guy at a bus stop for no reason other than staring. It's the day I thought nah, I'm no gangster. Beating 1 person up using all of your "friends" is not the the type of person I am. It was brutal but for a while I have a sense of belonging..
it's not brutal... it's fucken cringe and kiddish LOL. you wannabe kids have never stepped into a 1-on-1 fight with someone your size.
and you have zero fucking economic value it's funny as fuck. the average middle income person in singapore can literally buy your life out (but no one will... you're worth nothing LOL)

Yo ah yo….
Interesting that his darkest moment wasn’t when he was in his gang but the aftermath where he struggled to look for a job but took drugs after failing. I can relate in certain ways, when he was with his gang he had people to rely and be around with, hard to live with reality simply rejects you
You're a great inspiration Whye Kee. Thank you for sharing your story! Sending love and support from a fellow Singaporean. :)
Thanks
honestly he seems the sweetest guy like i would never think ever gang member. but his life story he has learnt many lessons from it and time in prison and has turned his life around this is awesome.
This is how feeling lack of love could leads you into the deepest anger but the nature character of love will able to guide you to sense and express love in most beautiful way 😊
Really inspiring. Thank you for sharing 🫶🏻
It is people like you who is able to rise up from the bottom of the strata that makes the society strong and vibrant. Its never those scholars who were born rich and educated well because they are expected to do well in society, good food is stuff into their mouths anyway, tuition is provided by their parents anyway. Its people like you who beat the expectations, figure it out and you have made the difference. Really well done.
It’s really a shame that he turned his back on the only people that accepted him
I will die for my cause because without cause life means nothing
It’s honor when you die for the gang
It is an honour if you bled and sacrifice for your brothers. if you are young and strong you can contribute to your gang by doing this. When one live past that age and is old and feeble, cannot be fighting and bleeding for your brothers anymore. Instead of honour, u will be burden and left alone. Might not even be respected by the new batch of joinees. Also if one gets married, what is he going to tell his son that he works as? Unemployed or odd job labour? It becomes a problem if by accident you did not die and live past 50s. A colourful which dulls after the prime age. I rather live a full well rounded life.
I am really glad to know that the brother is doing much more okay now , recovery is an ongoing challenge.
Thanks vice for enlightening a wider audience on some of these social challenges in an ever changing society, this topic hits close to home but the rules lead to consequences so I'll leave it at that.
There is a quote for those who had roam this side . "No one will know the violence to become this gentle."
Thank you for being such a heartwarming inspiration.
May you have continued success in life, Whye Kee.
Singaporean guy here. Thanks for covering this story, great coverage
We make mistakes in life and we learn from those mistakes well done he's putting his leadership skills in the right way now...

And yeah, good to see he is living a simple life now, away from temptation
Can make mistakes but NOT this type of mistake in this country!
So I heard a lot ('rich'&'powerful')ppl going to Singapore enjoying a 'top tier' life by expoilting/destroying the resources.ppl/environment of their own countries, and prostitution(with the women from the being-destoryed countries) is very popular there '(il)legally', and that's the reason Singapore is called a tax-evasion heaven legally, right?
And CNese is among the most, correct?
wow what a great story !! this touched me heart
May you continue to stay on the path you are going.Your life will continue to be at peace from the past. The talent you have with Pottery is amazing!

Thank you very much for the video! it is truly inspiring. People can change if they are given a chance.
This is really heartwarming. Thanks for sharing your story Whye Kee.
I understand where he came from and am glad he found a way to redeem himself. A true survivor and now a positive contributor. Shows how an environment plays a role which can influences a person. "I hardened these hands beause I build-not break!." - Have Heart
he realized he had great leadership skills and now uses it for good, that's so remarkable. now that was some good self-reflecting.
Had the chance to work together with Whye Kee on some pottery projects during the pandemic, I know he was gangsta but not until i see this then only I realise how gangsta is this guy. He is very humble in person now and you can see his passion in pottery in his eyes. Salut!

Appreciate the sharing of his story. This once again reinforces the importance of a strong family foundation and parental guidance. The lack of which, children will seek guidance and support elsewhere.

What an inspiring guy. Good job Whye Kee!
in the 90s singapore, it was a common sight to see "gangster" teens in colorful and loud branded clothing, our hair was centre parted mimicking our idols of the "four heavenly kings".. there was fire disco at orchard plaza for $10 entry fee called "tea dance" at 3pm, it was a 369 hangout..we were abled entry at 13 years old already unlike these days, trouble always brew over staring incidents, girls and "territory", i have to admit it was FUN for some years but now I cannot say we were gangsters, we were just trouble makers, the real gang era was in the 50s and 60s where money can be made and amass a small fortune, to all the sg youths out there, do not join "gangs" and take drugs...
Very moving and inspirational. Well done Whye Kee. I'm glad for you and your mum.

I am a Singaporean and i really appreciate VICE for showing this content, because "gangsterism" ......... is a past history. This is why i am proud to be in the Safest and most Advanced nation in Asia. We no longer have "gangsters" in my country - only small groups that are mainly non-violent - and what these "small groups" operate on are mainly sales of "illegal" (deemed by my country because these items cannot be tracked, taxed or are harmful substances) such as contraband cigarettes and counterfeit goods.
I stayed in Singapore for 4 months and I would say the most advanced and safe country on the Earth. Although I don't think they should be executing people for weed that's crazy lol. I remember the speakers in the airport announcing that anyone bringing in drugs (even marijuana) would be executed.
