  • Seed XOR backups with the Coldcard wallet can allow for a more robust and physical duress-resistant setup. This effectively takes a regular wallet backup (which is vulnerable to anyone with physical access) and creates plausible deniability combined with complexity in recovery to prevent funds from being stolen.
    This video walks through setting up a Seed XOR backup on the coldcard, full recovery, and how to utilize passphrases in concert with your backup.

    Very nice video! The "mathematical wizardry" than connects the original seed and the split generated seeds is quite simple: the xor of the (binary representation of) the word in each position is always zero. For instance, the first word of the original seed in the video is 'blue', and the first words in the seeds generated are 'beef' and 'arrange'. 'Blue' is the 195th word in the BIP39 word list, which corresponds no a binary value of 194. The same way, 'beef' has a binary value of 160 and 'arrange' of 98. Computing xor(98, 160) we get 194, that's how the original wallet is restored. Pretty amazing idea! So AFAIK you could even do it by hand, pen and paper, no device necessary.

    I love the COLDCARD. This is a really cool feature that I wasn't even aware of. Thanks Ben!

    Great video, you explained it really well. I actually have created a 2-of-3 XOR on a 24 word phrase for ledger manually. But I am seriously considering switching over to the cold card. It seems more secure and robust. thanks for the great info!!

    You could keep your original seed phrase, but give two different trusted people each the derived seed phrases in case you somehow lost yours.
    Like a parent who intends to leave their Bitcoin to their children anyway. Each child could receive one of the phrases.

    Great video like always, thanks for that. I do have a questions. When you set up XOR you didn't talk about the first original seed phrase to put also on a metal sheet. Is it not necessary to do so or what would you recommend? Greetings from Calgary

      The original seed phrase should be destroyed as you don't need it to recover the wallet.

  • @jquantum23
    @jquantum23 Před 2 lety +1

    Why not just add passphrase to seed and avoid the XOR altogether?

  • @CanadaExtreme
    @CanadaExtreme Před rokem

    wow I love this concept, if I wanted to use each of the XOR created seeds as well, would I need to load them on their own cold cards? or could I have a single device manage each seed with unique pins for each seed

    • @BTCSessions
      @BTCSessions  Před rokem

      I don't think you can add in more than 1 seed on a coldcard, but you could technically use the pieces of a seed xor on separate devices as their own wallets. This would effectively give you some redundancy as a secondary backup, while also adding the utility of additional wallets.

    Nice informative video, thanks for that but i have a question: if the badguy takes the Coldcard with him can you (if you remember the passphrase of course) enter this on another Coldcard and retrieve your wallet?

      @bradmarcus26 Před 2 měsíci

      YES. But you have to have the original seed and the passphrase to restore your funds.

    Great video. But, could you recover your wallet using any of the seed word methods if your Coldcard device was lost or stolen?

    • @BIP39-XOR
      @BIP39-XOR Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, you could decrypt "seed words" without a Coldcard device. There are open source programs for PC (any comments with links are deleted on CZcams so I suggest searching other sources).

    ok so Seed XOR + passphrase so even if they do get smart+ find 2 plates and run them as XOR they still need the passphrase out of your brain go get funds.

  • @deerikkayuki

    i keep with 24 words + passphrase, cuz all btc wallet supported it, SEED XOR only work on COLDCARD

    • @keefyboy
      @keefyboy Před 2 lety +1

      Practcally, I agree; factually I disagree with "only work on COLDCARD". XORs can be recreated mathematically; the same 24th word is a check sum to verify the math. Doing this a major PIA. Easy/automated reconstruction methods have your seed entered/displayed on a 'hot' computer.

    Great video. Good concepts for plausible deniability. FYI, I failed to find your promo code for a discount. Clicking the link above just before "SUPPORT THE SHOW" takes me to the CoinKite page that i found last night to get 5% off for paying in btc, which is offered to everyone, not just those who watched your video. Typo perhaps?
