- In this video we take a look at the gaming and emulation performance of Intel's i9-13900K and how it compares side by side with the i9-12900K. More cores and higher clock speeds result in better performance, but is it worth the upgrade?

THANK YOU. By showing me your stuff, you save me a lot of time and I don't have to test it. Magnificent work brother.
From Valencia SPAIN
Thank you 😊
Thank You!!! I've been debating on upgrading my CPU but it's not enough for me to upgrade if I don't upgrade the gpu as well.
A great review! The RPCS3 comparisons are very helpful. Did you enable AVX-512 on your i9-12900K and in the emulator settings?
If this feature was set to OFF in your bios or emulator settings, it would be awesome to see the difference if you turned it back on!
Disabled. Option gone from my BIOS a while back www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-bios-update-disables-alder-lake-avx-512
Love how you included modnation racers always loved that game
Question about your RPCS3 test, even thought the 12900k was above 60 it looked a lot choppier than the 13900. Was it noticeable during testing?
do you think the frame times played a factor
Awesome, thanks for the RPCS3 testing!
Love to see RPCS3 benchmarks! You could make your results usable by specifying AVX-512 on or off and including power consumption
I was running the latest BIOS and AVX-512 is long gone. Power is a good idea, will add in the future.
@@Robtech Not long gone, unless you are using a 12900k with square logo and not the ones with halo logo. Bios can be downgraded to older version. Also not sure if the Asrock motherboard can disable e-cores, maybe it can idk. You can check if AVX-512 is working or not using CPU-Z software.
thanks for the rpcs3 benchmarks!
Thanks for the content. Was AVX-512 on for the 12900k?
I know mine is always on 🎩
Off. Running latest BIOS for 13th gen compatability which disables it www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-bios-update-disables-alder-lake-avx-512
Was avx512 activated for the 12th gen cpu or was this stock for both? Sorry if I missed it in the video.
No worries. Both stock settings for 1:1 comparison.
Raptor Lakes are expected to have AVX512F unavailable, just like the last batches of Alder Lake.
@@mihailrofel8162 Yes I know. Important to know which is the best for me. 12th gen with AVX512 or 13th gen (which obv does not have it at all). I always want to know the best for RPCS3.
I imagine overclocked 13th gen would beat alder lake but nothing to write home about if sm1 already had 12th gen avx512 probably. It would also depend on game I guess.
@@Robtech Thank you!
@@dormanthero overclocked 13900k isnt going to beat the 12900k with avx 512 for emulation
You would get alot higher FPS if you turn off E-cores and turn on AVX512 for RCPS3
So in short, if I already own a 12900k in box waiting to be put together in my new build and my main purpose will be gaming and minimal productivity, the 13900k is not worth it to upgrade to?
Due to the wait on cheaper DDR5 memory (which I have now), I'm not sure what to do now, stay on 12th gen or go for 13th gen.
Yeah, you're best off waiting. Mostly productivity gains thanks to the extra cores
@@Robtech So keeping my 12th gen i9 for my new build, it is :)
Just out of curiosity (from a non-gamer), what is the fps difference (visually) that can be detected without actually having to measure it. e.g. is a 10% difference noticeable? From the visuals in the video, there did not seem to be much of a discernible difference to me between the processors' performance.
Depends on the person. I see the difference clearly up to 144Hz, but then the benefits diminish exponentially. While I'm getting hundreds of frames in these examples, I'm only capturing the video at 60fps, so you won't see any difference. To get any benefit, the framerate needs to match the monitor refresh rate. For example, if a monitor is 60Hz, it only updates the image 60 times per second. So 60FPS maxes out that monitor. For a 144Hz monitor the ideal video feed is 144fps and so on.
@@Robtech thanks for the response, that clears it up for me 👍
Nice to see benchmarks on RPCS3. You should try benchmarking more demanding games such as Midnight Club LA and Red Dead Redemption.
Also MCLA is most demanding when driving around during the day and in the middle of South Central (the map expansion). RDR is most demanding in towns.
Hey bud, your 12900K was reaching 105 degrees at some spots. Wasn't that affecting it's performance?
My 12900k is ideal. I'm gaming at ultrawide and 4k and I'm not going to able to tell a difference unless I'm sitting staring at a chart.
Rob, I always like your reviews, so thank you, but while this is an Intel to Intel comparison, I think it wouldn't hurt to add that while AMD doesn't seem to want to further discount their new ZEN4 chips, the are including a Lovely Synthetic-Teak Knife Block with their steak knives, and that has to count for something, surely....
Go for whoever offers the nicest set
Why do you only test in 1080p and not 4K? I haven't played 1080p games in years.
At 4K every game is bottlenecked by the GPU. We're testing which CPU is faster, not which one is has the lowest CPU utilisation at 4K.
Thanks for the nice review as always. But, I am curious how your RTX 3090 came delivered? The scream tells me that it was horrible packed. regarding the cpu. Personally I would never buy one of the I9 or Ryzen 9 cpus. You pay the preium price and compared to the I7/I5 and Ryzen 7 Ryzen 5 cpus from the same generation the extra power you get is not worth the price. Even as a streamer I never needed that kind of cpu power. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next review! Cheers!
The address was written on a piece of paper and taped to the 3090 box. Then the whole box was taped with transparent tape as if that somehow made it packaged? No external packaging to hide the contents. Luckily Australia Post is pretty reliable and it wasn't "lost in the mail"
Wait so you're telling me without AVX-512 on the Intel i9-13900K, it actually runs better than the 12900k on the PS3 emulator?
www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-nukes-alder-lake-avx-512-now-fuses-it-off-in-silicon
Where can I get my knives? XD
Those CPU Temps are just ridiculous. I cant belive how much is 12900k hotter and at what temps is running... crazy.
Im never gonna understand why only gaming benchmarks for a freaking 2% usage component
Games don't use 24 cores 32 threads. A low CPU utilisation doesn't mean it's not stressing the cores and threads it is using.
actually, turning off the e cores makes it faster
My 12600k is 5.2ghz overclocked all cores.
DDR5 6400mhz.
Am I the only one here that wastes money and constanly feels "I should buy the 13900K now, eventhough I have 12900k"
i'm more interested in the 13600k being benchmarked like this
well done anyway
13600K review coming soon.
How come the 12900 is hotter then 13900 ?
I was looking at another comparisson between these two and it was the other way around, 13900 hotter, but here is the opposite.
They have not Cooler?, WoW those temps are sun
13900K is better than stock 12900K in RPCS3 for sure, but I've read an older firmware 12900K with AVX-512 enabled absolutely destroys Intel's newer chip in more demanding games like RDR2. I've read a good 5-15 FPS on average.
The 12900k was literally on fire at 2% usage lol. Surprised it didn’t just blue screen
105c wtf?
Thanks, but will stick to my 11600 + 3060 combo 😅
Correction: you said 13900k has 32 threads, it actually has 24
