- Hi friends, I share with you my guitar cover of one of the most complex and brilliant song I have encountered so far by the legendary Robert Fripp: I have taken it as a personal studio for some time!
I have been asked many times to share my job, and this is one of my latest attempts that I'm sharing of this very hard song, I hope you like it! :)

Came here because Robert Fripp recommended your performance on Facebook. You are a truly outstanding talent!
Thank you very much!!
He did? That’s amazing that he knows about it.
Supernatural.
“Fracture is impossible to play.”
- Robert Fripp
Thank you very much! :D
What really elevates this performance is how musical it is. It doesn't feel like a parlor trick, it doesn't feel like guitar calisthenics: it feels like a song despite all of its abstraction, full-tone scales and angular modulations...
Ma che cosa incredibile...
Brava Maria! Ancora buon Prog ti faccia..🐺
How ON EARTH did you do THAT? 33 years of guitar playing and teaching and I NEVER thought anyone else but Fripp could play like THAT. My sincere congrats.

@@MariaBarbieriGuitarist great Barbieri
When Fripp wrote, played, and recorded "Fracture", he was relatively young. He had a youngish person's finger flexibility. That is no longer true, and no amount of practice or correct technique can entirely compensate for nearly fifty years of slow aging. Maria is still young, and still has that advantage he no longer does. All other things being equal, a piece that has become "impossible" for a 75-year-old man may be only "very difficult" for a woman still in her twenties.
Which is not denigrating her accomplishment at all - I'm not sure if anybody else, ever, has successfully and correctly covered "Fracture".
Pontosan.
I have maintained for years that Fripp was the best guitarist because no one has ever done a good cover of this. The fact you are the ONLY person I have ever seen to pull it off proves it, and elevates you to god-mode. Well done.
Thanks!!
GODDESS level indeed
Just imagine the fact that he wrote this too. Those melodic riffs are amazing writing.
Look up Failure to Frakture. Dude learned the song over a 20 year period. Then he learned FraKtured.
Vai and Satch did a terrible cover of Red, it's true. Maria trumped them in that regard. No mean feat!
Thank you for making me,a 53 old k.c. .fan, cry with delight.
This is insane, she plays it like it's nothing. Awesome job.
Thank you very much!😃
I am Japanese. I wanted to listen to "Fracture" and did a search. Among the many King Crimsons, I found a woman sitting on the sofa with a bear. I thought it was a silly video. But as soon as I played it, I realized it wasn't. I was in a terrible misunderstanding. While I was watching your performance, I felt the divinity of you playing the guitar, like Robert Fripp. It was a wonderful performance that made my heart beat faster.
I agree with your comments. She is amazing! Two days ago I discovered a guitarist from Japan named Kazuhito Yamashita. In 1984 he performed -Pictures at an Exhibition (Modest Mussorgsky)-. It is perhaps the most incredible guitar I've seen.; also of divinity! The video is here on CZcams. I hope this will translate okay if you do not read English. Best Regards
I love her expression at 6:07. If I'm interpreting it correctly, she's signalling, "Yea! I made it through the hard bit!"
Absolutely! Yeah
I thought just that a minute before I read your comment.. :D
It's a right interpretation! :D
It's a blunder on the album. Listen to the album again! There's no wrong in this case. She's perfect!
Everyone's perception is very different. For me that look is very sexual, and I found it very interesting that that look appeared in the most powerful part of the song.
For the Fripp himself to be impressed enough to share this, confirms my own sense of awe. Shockingly good!!!
Finally King Crimson becomes modern classical music. Great work on that piece.
Thanks!!
It always have been mafrend😊
My god, I’m speechless.. a guitarist myself, a huge, huge KC and Mr. Fripp’s fan for many years, this number being one of my select few most revered and appreciated compositions.. was never able to play it myself no matter how I tried.. Heard many renditions, all of them either nothing more than robotic exercises, or “adapted” to modern guitar styles, either way ending up way too far from the _spirit_ of the original. But yours.. I cried. I literally found myself in tears. Just unbelievable. Thank you so very much Maria! You are wonderful, wonderful musician. You got the _soul_. God bless you, keep your amazing talent shining bright!
Thank you very much! ❤️
Heart attack.

Amazing!!!!!
Meravigliosa. : )
The best prog guitarist on CZcams
Thank you very much!!
Speaking as one who saw the Bruford/Cross/Fripp/Wetton lineup twice, I must say I am far more than a little impressed. The future of music is in good hands.
In good hands indeed, she is the future of prog guitar playing.
I also was that sharp.
Brilliant! Absolutely perfect. So young and she plays "one of the most difficult guitar pieces" like she was sipping a cup of tea. Robert Fripp must have appreciated. Nothing more to say.👍👏👏👏
Thank you very much!🙂
Fripp: ”Fracture is impossible to play”
Maria: Hold my teddybear
Excellent !
I think he meant a "practical impossibility," like how it eats up all his practice and rehearsal time, making it harder to play well on the rest of the material.
Having seen the last performance of KC in Central Park with Bruford, Wetton, Cross, and Fripp, you brought back memories of that incredible evening.
You nailed it Maria...
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I think it's time to burn 🔥 all my guitars.
You're a lucky person Howie 🤘
I was their too, plus at May 73' CP, Academy of Music Sept 73' and 74' Asbury Park(USA) 👍🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥
All I want to know is what kind of troll would click the thumbs down on something like this? Unbelievable job, Maria! You should be very proud of yourself!
It’s often in error.
A jealous armchair musician progboy would.
Fripp has been known to be temperamental...
Someone not concerned with virtue signaling.
Six frustrated people who will never be able to do this...
My goodness, i didn't think anybody couĺd play this except fripp top notch.
holy shit someone actually played this correctly. every other cover I've seen they're slipping up a couple times a minute
The other person who did a very close version was Alex Anthony Faide who Anthony Garone interviewed for his Make Weird Music channel when he was still trying to learn it. Tough, tough piece. I love Marias's vibrato on some of the sustained longer notes here and there - she gives it verve and a bit of an attitude. Lots of people try to play it but you just know they are walking a tightrope. Maria seems to be dancing on it.
@@aliensporebomb I just watched that and he got pretty damn close, but maria is the first person I've seen to own this piece. In college my band did a lot of crimson covers and I was able to play larks tongues pt 1 and that was damn near impossible.
Better to try than not to try, I think. But yes, Maria's version is flawless.
@@connordunckel8544 : took me 8 weeks with 4 hours a day just for the 2:02 to 2:32 passage in Great Deceiver... Was still in high school then (end 80's), well, it just makes the point at how hardcore the KC songbook is...
You are amazing. That's one of the most complicated pieces in 20th century music, you made that look... well, not effortless, but possible... which is impossible.
I'm so glad to be alive to witness and experience this.
Thank you! :D
4:05 wow even that downward arpeggiated riff that Fripp plays differently than the other times is NAILED EXACT (he might’ve even played it “sloppily” on the original recording by his own admission)
That is THE best cover of Fracture I've ever seen. Incredible. Bravo!
Thanks!!
Easily the best, absolutely fantastic.
I've seen 2 covers of Fracture.
This and by ... Make Weird Music guy
I came her from the the legend himself, the FRIPP, who shared this on fb. Best cover ive heard of frctr!
Thank you very much!! 😃
I first heard this nearly 40 years ago, and still it thrills me. I love it when Bruford lets out two shouts shortly after 8:20 ... excellent rendition, perfect! Brava!
that woahs were probably from audience since Fracture was recorded live in Amsterdam
Bruford is usually very focused when playing w/ Fripp
@@irayun5547 I've heard before that it was Bruford.
@@irayun5547 It's Wetton.
I always thought it was Wetton but could be wrong.
Some parts of it are live, some others estudio, is the final editing what makes the song impossible to play, not exactly the ability to play it. If you listen carefully there are several parts with two guitars at the same time. Is the edition of the song what it really makes it magical
Must've been so satisfying hitting that last tritone knowing that you nailed it, which you did!! Congratulations.
She bosses the ultimate Crimso banger! I am left a tearful slobbering mess on the floor.
One of the best guitar players I have seen on this website and needs more recognition.
Thank you very much!!
This is truly superb. Fripp used to say it was one of his most challenging pieces and you have mastered it.
Thank you very much! :D
This is the best birthday present 🎂🎁! That I have ever had. Thank you. Exquisite. Sublime.
Happy Birthday and thank you! :D

Recommended by the master himself and, By God! it does it justice. Sensational.
I can hear Bruford in my head! "Keep going! Keep going! One last round!"
I have fallen hopelessly in love.
Just picking a KC song with some of Robert's most stunning virtuosity is a very brave thing to take on. And wow, she pulls it off marvelously. Some of those passages are crazy difficult to master. BRAVO !
Good heavens Maria, my deepest respect! You pulled it off, this Mother of Complex Songs.
Bravo, Maria 🔥!!! Back in the early '70s a friend (guitar) and I (bass) learned Fracture. Wetton's bass lines were fun to play, but only decades later did I realize how difficult the guitar was...and my friend had it nailed note-for-note / pick-for-pick. To this day it still amazes me.
Who's that guitarist ? I'd thought only Kunio Suma had nailed it back in the 70s
@@chriscross773 Lost contact with him over 45 yrs. ago. I don't feel at liberty to divulge his name, but he was originally from Enfield, CT and was living in San Francisco the last I knew. Way, way ahead of the pack.
você é um gênio, mulher. obrigado.
Brave woman! Fracture is the final level monster for guitar players! I love your cover!
The Holy Grail of modern guitar composition exquisitely played. Superb! I'll pick my jaw up off the floor and subscribe. Love it!
I was not expecting for it to be that good, what a nightmare of piece to learn
I've never been so impressed by a guitar cover on CZcams. That is mindblowingly amazing!
I didn't think it was possible to play it this flawlessly (unless you're Fripp)
Amazing job!
This is sheer insanity. What mind blowing technicality and precision. Amazing job, Maria!
What Frank Zappa would have called "stunt guitar". Too dangerous for ordinary people to attempt. Respect.
I don't think Beat, the fortcoming Crimson-players Belew/Vai/Levin/Carey, will pick this one up. Regretably for us, since Vai would probably be able to play this too after a lot of struggle. Probably. But I doubt as fluently as this one.
Sei bravissima!
WHOA. OMG. OUTSTANDING!!!!
No mere tribute! Thank you for putting in the work, making the near-impossible look easy, and rendering a great piece of music for fresh audiences.
Thank you very much! 😃
I love it when Friday the 13th falls on a Tuesday -- crazy things happen. Brava!
HOLY SHIT girl... One of my favorite pieces of music. You nailed it...
Brava Maria ! Complimenti .
I'm following Robert Fripp's link from FB. I've been listening to this piece since Starless and Bible Black was released. Amazing rendition! You make it look easy. Congratulations!
Thank you very much! 😃
Best cover of Fracture I've ever seen, after so many years. I can't think of a higher praise. Loved the cheeky smile after the moto perpetuo.
I can close my jaw now.
Thank you!! :)
Bravissima,brano difficile complesso,davvero fantastica.
Am impressed
Thanks!🙂🙂🎸
OMG! Saw KC do this but you could never see close up what Robert Fripp was playing but this is absolutely incredible, this is one of the most complex guitar instrumentals ever composed and to see it close up and covered is a miracle in itself! I applaud you Ms. Barbieri!
Thank you very much!! 😃
AbsoSmurphly amazing!
I have always suffered through listening this composition but have always listened to it in its entirety out of respect for the musicianship involved. This is the first time I’ve listened to it with glee watching this young virtuoso performance of what is a long and relatively complex composition. This true dedication to an art.
Thank you very much!!
Your welcome.
Keep learning KC compositions. Some day Robert Fripp mite need your services for a future KC tour.
"relatively complex" 😂
@@peterresetz1960 : Or simply to replace him... But, KC is not classical music : improvisation skills are necessary, and a good understanding of how building pretty insane structures using the nastiest tools available for the composer...
*_"I have always suffered through listening this composition but have always listened to it in its entirety out of respect for the musicianship involved"_*
I have always had eargasm listening to it even if, guitarwise, it amounts to climb the K2 by the north side during a winter snow storm and without oxygen bottles.
Cried the entire way through. Incredible and completely awe-inspiring.
Thank you very much!!🙂🎸
She will be helping out Big Big Train as their 'replacement guitarist' for the upcoming European 2023 tour of August/September. Can't wait to see her in action with the BBT song material
Excuse me, while I throw my guitar out the window...
That was incredible 👏👏👏✌️😎
Wow! Thank you for doing this!
Fracture is my favorite KC piece and I know how it's hard to play.
You do it so smoothly as it's supposed to be.
Brilliant!
It's all about rhythm. Italian did it again 💗😄Stunning performance 😎💜 Grazie
¡¡¡Espectacular🤩!!!
Spectacular🤩!!!
All my admiration🙇 (because according to Fripp himself it is impossible😁)!! 👏👏👏💐💐💐
Wow. A Fripp-level event.
BRAVO! Excellent job. Brings back memories of not only my band but seeing them perform in Philadelphia so many years ago.
Wow, that is rather awesome. Climbing Mt. Everest is easier 😀
Thank you very much! :D
Absolutely amazing played, I'm really impressed
Believably awesome.
Totally badass. Even the 20th time!
Wow, you did it. Like, that’s you, right there, doing it, seemingly effortlessly by the look of it. I can’t imagine how much practice went into this. Plus you look like you’re having so much fun playing this! Great job 👍
Thank you so much!🙂🎸
Marvelous. Stupendous. Seeing is believing. Much Love and Respect :-D
I'm no guitar player, but sounds to my ears that she nailed it while many have struggled to play this correctly - even Fripp himself says it's "impossible" to play correctly! Maybe one secret is to have relatively small, dexterous fingers to expertly fret the ridiculously complicated quiet bits... Very well done!
Grazie mille!!🙂
[Almost] impossible to play... 😉 And your rendition is amazing... Crystal and velvet, as usual... 👏 Fripp himself shared this video... Great performance, indeed
Thank you very much!!😃
That's right - you should smile! That little grin after the killer middle section before the bar chords said: Yeah, I just did that "impossible" bit. You're one talented human...who has seriously put in some practice time. Brava!
Estoy maravillado.
This is my favorite king crimson tune. I never ever get tired of listening to it and you just nailed it! Very impressive
Bravissimo! Legendary as one of Fripp's toughest guitar parts, and you nailed it! Hats off to you maestro!
Bravo Maria 👏
To master Fracture .
By the Master himself.
Robert Fripp.
Well Robert stated.
Was impossible to play.
Rare like very Rare.
Possible.
I'm impressed.
Fracture has a legend attached to it.
Like Black Napkin by ZAPPA.
Maria there you go.
You Rock !!!
I envy your commitment. This is quite special!
I'm jealous. And you make it look so effortless for you.
I'm a guitarist and this has to be one of the headiest songs to play ever! I learned it in 1974 by turning the record played down to 16 speed. Even though I leaned it playing it clean was just damn near impossible! That is amazing! Fantastic job!
Looks, brains, Frippertronics... She's got it all!!
Good grief I had troubles making toast this morning. Never in a million years could I attempt this. Well done totally enjoyed this. There is now a book about this song Failure to Fracture by Anthony Garone.
did you take 22 years to learn it tho?
I rewatch this video every month or so. It makes me so happy!
Desperately tense, I've assisted to the best performance of THE IMPOSSIBLE ever rendered... great!
The BEST cover I have ever heard of this masterpiece. Bravo!
Just watched it again! Absolutely fantastic! I know how hard this piece is - I died on that mountain in the '70s.
You are an amazing guitar player.
Thank you!!
..... Maria tu sei geniale. La mia figlia é María come te. Bravo cara !!
Grazie mille!🙂
Wow wow wow!!!! I love this!!!! It gave me goosebumps only by hearing that beautiful tone and fluidity!!! You are so amazing, Maria!!!! ❤️🐻🔥
Thank you very much my friend!!🐻❤️🎸
