    The background music of this video is very underrated! Whenever he talks about a 251 or shows a 251 on the screen, the wurli plays some form of a 251, very clever!

    In the volleyball analogy, I actually think of the "spike" as the dominant chord, which forces the sound to the next team. They will respond by "bumping" on the I of the spike, and then setup a new offensive maneuver, with a "set" on a ii chord, and "spike" with the V to yet another chord. The insight here is the the "bump" is a response to the previous "spike", while the "set" and "spike" is a new attack (chord).

    In addition to the ii chord being m7(♭5) in a ii-V targeting a minor chord, the V chord is also usually 7(♭9♭13), for the exact same reason: Take the minor target scale and make it a have a Dominant V chord, and the resultant chord scale has a ♭9 and a ♭13.

    Thanks for a great video! quick question tho - how do you comp with it? do you create a pedal point by just playing the original chords or do you actually play 251? I know it wouldn't be an "invisible" if chord players played 251 but just curious if the line based on tritone subs work with the original chords too.

  • @scottt9382
    @scottt9382 Před 3 lety

    1:47. soooooo, the ii is the supertonic diatonically, right? But, you are saying that it is functioning as the or a pre-dominant based on this (very common) usage in the progression?

  • @IvanArdillo
    @IvanArdillo Před 3 lety

    4:47 if you have to think about this lick on E half-dim / A7 / Dm would you think it as D harmonic minor changing to Dm or A phrygian dominant?

  • @timhan9264
    @timhan9264 Před 3 lety

    Great stuff. Question: Gm7 to Dbm7 isn't technically a tritone sub (same inverted function with the 3rd and 7th scale degrees, but not tritones), but it's still a common sub . Do you know what the precise definition of this sub is? Also agree with the commenter below about "picking an audience".

  • @zaiffulgani145
    @zaiffulgani145 Před 3 lety

    Is tonicization different from changing the key in the middle of the piece, then going back to the original key?
    Sorry I'm new to music theory and all of my knowledge are just from my own effort of reading texts and playing the piano (not so good on that lol) and watching videos like this.

  • @frankgreco
    @frankgreco Před 3 lety

    Great explanation Jeff! Really opened my eyes. Just one question... at 5:45 you mention you can ii-V-I-ize any chord... so you have a Am7->D7->Bm7... but previously you said the ii chord has to be a half-diminished chord if your target chord is a minor. So shouldn't that Am7 be a Am7b5 (half-dim)?

    • @ChrisBellingham
      @ChrisBellingham Před 3 lety

      I think the two bars before the ii-V-I are just 2-5's. They resolve to another 2-5 instead of a 1.

    • @frankgreco
      @frankgreco Před 3 lety +1

      @@ChrisBellingham That's possible Chris, but I thought the whole point was to resolve to a 1, ie, the target chord. The ii-V should lead you to that I/i. Earlier in the vid, Jeff said the II had to be a 7b5 (half-dim) chord. That's why the part at 5:45 was confusing to me.

    • @ChrisBellingham
      @ChrisBellingham Před 3 lety +1

      @@frankgreco I think Jeff said it's 'typically' a 7b5. I think the quality of the ii might also be related to the scale. A B7b5 suggests C major, whereas the E7b5 suggests F major. That's all I've got. It's a good question. We really need @Jeff Schneider to weigh in.
