Wow. I have his recording of Turandot with Herva Nelli (I believe), and always loved his timbre, style and sense of "slancio." This is incredible. One wonders why more of the general opera public do not know of him or mention him with the greats.
The two singers inhabit different universes! To mention the two in one sentence is blasphemy. Just to clarify, without modern recording techniques MDM is not fit to lick the boots of this true God of singing!
@@JussiPaul Without modern recording techniques? The London recordings did not do MDM any justice. His was a voice that had to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Jerome Hines mentions here on YT that upon hearing Del Monaco for the first time in a 1951 Aida rehearsal at the Met,'' It was the most GIGANTIC sound I ever heard. We were all standing listening to MDM with our mouths open. Impetus phrasing, endless breath, a clear bronze like quality with impeccable diction and perhaps the greatest B-Flats of any tenor may not be your cup of tea. But his style of singing was never an option for any other tenor before or after.
@@JussiPaul Yes, I heard MDM live at a recital at Carnegie Hall circa 1962. I also heard Corelli circa 1961 at the Met in Trovatore and Di Stefano in concert at Carnegie Hall around the same period of time. All terrific, but in different ways.
Clear diction, squillo and chest all the way up. Something for a tenor of today to strive for. Perfetto!
Great dramatic tenor!
MERAVIGLIOSO!!!

Before MDM, there was Francesco Merli.

Del Monaco has some great performances but overall merli is the more natural and balanced singer
