It's not unusual for people to realize one's true talent until they are gone ! At least she was doing something she loved. Few people ever get paid for doing what they love. I know she had a very hard life. She did live her dream, and I'm comforting in believing that gave her some peace of mind.

@PsychoBoar , I'm 14 too, and started listening to Billie when I was 10. I'm an old soul, and listen to all the songs back in the day because they have meaning unlike most songs today.

This is exactly what you feel like when you know love is gone or was never there and you thought it was. You open your eyes to the oxymoron of pain and emptiness at the same time. I hope no one ever has to feel this.

i bean through this recently and im a muscian and its no fun being in love with a woman to only find out she never ever saw you or even wants to be with you that way thats when you realy truly understand jazz music because once you experience real heartace on that level only then you can begin to play jazz like this from the depths of your broken heart and it comes out sounding so truthful musically but at the same time beautiful

bscondict - How succinctly you put it. She never resorts to showing off her range. She just belts out the melody with her very unique voicings. The manner in which she drops (or jumps) an octave on a note and then just brings it back so that all three notes sound as one is so original and bluesy when used to effect. It's a gas. But it's her timing that's so cool. She delivers the essence of the blues. Deep from the black experience of the war and post war years. Soul Music. The bomb.

If you've read anything about B.H. this song is her coming to terms with dealing with her emotional pain using a drug as the alternative. She should never be demonized for this, but empathized with; and that's not an excuse...remember history and what a ground-breaker this great performer was. RIP LADY DAY!

If the music is truly good, it will recognize no boundaries. I am 57 years old.. I love Ms. Holliday as well as Kid Rock, Hank Williams SR. as well as Motley Crue. Merle Haggard and George Jones as well as Garbage and the bone thugs. But I have to say that as a young person such as yourself, it is refreshing to hear that you didn't need the opinions of your peers to make up your mind for you. Good on yas.
