    As I watch this devastation in the Bahamas I look around me, my family, my house, my stuff, and I try to imagine what it would be like to experience such utter destruction.
    I can not.

      It depends a lot on the individual and their circumstance. I lost everything once in a flood, I was literally left with solely whatever clothing I had been wearing, utterly destitute. However I was young and without family. My reaction was to laugh at the lesson in the ephemerality of material things. Fortunately I had friends whom I could turn to. These people's friends are probably in the same situation.

    What devastation! Much of this looks like the damage you'd see with an EF4 tornado, yet not in one path, but across the whole island! As far as I know, it is unprecedented to have a Cat 5 hurricane just, basically, sit over one spot and spin and spin and spin for almost 40 hours total. As a Washington Post article said:
    "At that time, the National Hurricane Center issued several dire statements, warning of the potential for 220 mph wind gusts and an 18- to 23-foot ongoing storm surge, which is the storm-driven rise in ocean water above normally dry land. At that point, Dorian was moving west at 5 mph...
    By the time the Category 5 monster arrived on Grand Bahama, it had slowed to a crawl. According to Philip Klotzbach, a hurricane specialist and researcher at Colorado State University, Dorian was the strongest Atlantic storm on record to venture so far north. It also tied for the dubious title of strongest hurricane wind speed at landfall in the North Atlantic Ocean Basin since records began in the late 1800s.
    Think back to the devastation associated with Hurricane Michael in October 2018. That storm’s eyewall probably spun over any given area for about two hours. Now add 20 mph to the already Category 5 winds, an extra nine or 10 feet of storm surge, and hold the storm still for more than 36 hours. It’s simply unimaginable..."
    Unimaginable, and yet these dear people experienced it. I hope foreign aid can arrive soon.

    • @HeartlandTuber
      @HeartlandTuber Před 4 lety +2

      The winds were of tornado speed. Imagine having a strong tornado sitting on top of your house for over 24 hours. That was this hurricane over these islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. It stalled and set over the two for about 36 hours, actually. With tornado force winds.

      Actually I do know - I am a German Engineer (Wood Technology). I also know, that common houses made out of bricks or concrete are at at risk too in a hurrican, they might can withstand the winds, but not the flood and the flying debris. Maybe some kind of aerodynamic bunker on stilts could lower the risk, though that doesn't stop a cat 5 storm to destroy the surrounding infrastructure.
      But the reality of climate change is, that more and more place in the world will become inhabitable and the Carribbean Sea seems to be one of them.
