  • In this video we look at the much lauded Trinnov ST-2 Pro Digital Acoustic and Metering Processor. We didn't like what SonarWorks/SoundID did to our monitoring, but this is an entirely different beast. Are the differences worth the vastly increased asking price? Find out in this video!

    This is why I use electrostatics for my “large monitors” , my phase response is flat, according to my AMFG SysTune professional measurement system, completely flat from 200 to 20,000 Hz, the rest close to it, this is actually very disconcerting for many listening because it seems to remove the speakers from the room, also being a very narrow fixed dispersion line array, 30 degrees H, + - 2 degrees V, room reflections are very controllable, mainly just back and front walls needing heavy treatment. I like it!

    • @yona9798
      @yona9798 Před 2 lety

      I’ve used ARC as well as Sonarworks(/SoundID) and REW w/ convolution reverb. The main downside I see to using ARC is that it doesn’t have a systemwide application. I found a workaround using it as a systemwide vst-plugin but it wasn’t very reliable and had a large amount of latency. Combine that with somewhat worse overall sound and you know why I would rather recommend Sonarworks or DIY. That being said, depending on your rooms acoustics, it will probably still sound better than nothing at all.
      (On reliability: Sonarworks isn’t acually perfect in that regard either. But at least it as a standalone application. That already helps a lot. The most reliable solution I’ve used so far was actually just generating all the filters myself with REW and using convolution reverb in my DAW and parametric eq systemwide.)

    • @the80386
      @the80386 Před 2 lety +1

      Both Dirac and ARC are more accurate than Sonarworks. Sonarworks has a good looking UI but the sound correction leaves something to be desired. It can be anomalous and inconsistent. Dirac and ARC are quite close, with Dirac edging out ARC slightly.

    • @yona9798
      @yona9798 Před 2 lety

      @@the80386 I totally agree on the reliability issues with Sonarworks. Still, not having a standalone kind of disqualifies ARC imho. I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews when it comes to Dirac, but never tried it. Maybe I should though, it’s just quite expensive if I remember correctly. How big is the difference? I’ll do some reading on it myself of course, but a lot if the time first hand experience is worth more in audio imho. Thanks!

    @alexanderaseffa Před 2 lety +12

    Although may not be at Trinnov level, would you consider Neumann or IK Multimedia to have similar solution? Saving the calibration within the DSP equipped speakers seems ideal. Even if not very accurate I would think general key areas adjustment should suffice and the rest up to your ears. It takes a while and lots of listening and experiments to learn and trust most speakers. Great Work!!

    One question: Did you notice any narrowing of the sweet spot?
    I ask because, while running some experiments with live sound speakers and FIR filters, we noticed that if we were to "force" the FIR filters to completely flatten out the curve, the response slightly off-axis would get a bit smeared. Granted, this was only when it was forced to an extreme. But since this is an automated method, I was wondering if you noticed anything like that.

    This is why I only use my ARC 3 to check for things I’ve missed while mixing, or when confused to have a second “flatter” opinion.
    I’m a believer in the real value of room correction, but knowing your listening environment and how it responds to different genres etc is the most important aspect.
    Without that sense ingrained you’d be more confused by a flatter response than helped.
    Really willing to try a Trinnov down the line, I really need more time in my life so whatever shaves the workload I’m all for it, even if it costs dearly

If someone makes a great product which makes your job easier, quicker and better, they're allowed to let the cost reflect that. In a professional setting the expenses will pay themselves over time, quicker if said product saves you money. You do not have to be a professional to understand that (I'm not). Business 101.

    Your videos are not only informative but entertaining, thank you very much! An ST2 arrived yesterday, the acoustician will be setting it up and validating with his own measuring gear this week, can't wait! Brian Lucey is a friend and he couldn't speak highly enough about Trinnov. Went at length into what it's done for his Atmos mastering room, so i just went ahead and purchased it. I too am partial to ATC BTW. Take care.

    When building your working environments, you have to consider many aspects, including time spent working vs downtime/family time/leisure time, which has a different priority to everyone. But... If £5k gives you back 20% of every day of your life, that's 45 days of the year back (based on Mark's current working schedule). Either earn 20% more money, or spend 20% more of your time doing other activities, but if your business makes more than £25k a year, then it's a no brainer purchase.

    The multi-mic mic is a great and obvious solution (now it's been shown to me!), love it.
    I always put my mic on a stand when doing Sonarworks calibrations due to my fears of handshakes.
    Love that it re-checks after doing its calibration, it always annoys me that Sonarworks doesn't and just tells you it's solved it.

    As someone who works primarily on headphones (90/10, with the 10% being laptop speakers, my 2.1 TV speakers and the iPhone’s speaker as references) I am considering getting the sonarworks plugin, although I have to get a compatible headset first. What amazes me is, not only how far and how affordable this technology has become but, also, the fact that for decades even high end studios didn’t have access to it and yet, they were able to make amazing records. Credit should be given to the audio engineers who designed those rooms, I have been to one designed by Tom Hidley and it was a truly humbling experience!

    You know, what i noticed here in YT? Genelec's auto EQ not boost and just cut. I tried Sonarworks with Reduced (6dB) boost and it show simulated curve almost ideal, but i hear that it's weak and less natural. Sonarworks with No boost is just urgh. I use to it with +12 normal boost restriction, cause have no choice actually, and it's ok. Without boosting it seems clear, but too weak and weird.
    **Probably i should try to get use to "no boost"... again :)

    "professional level pricing". Nah, you don't need to spend 5000 Bucks on something like that to be a pro - most pros don't. "Pro-level-pricing" is a bogus term. Not even going to watch the video any further than that. Pros treat their room right and 5000 Bucks to "help that along with DSP" sounds outlandish to me. A term like "pro-level-pricing" sounds a lot like marketing to me.

    • @akagerhard
      @akagerhard Před 2 lety +6

      @Wayne Brown you do understand the concept of implied statements, right? If you say something is "pro level pricing" while other products you mention before aren't, you are implying that professionals would pick the one with "pro level pricing". That's not even worth discussing, it's crystal clear. It's a rhetorical trick salesman do to justify a price while hyping up the product at the same time.
      And since it IS obvious and you still chose to act as if you didn't know what I'm talking about and wrote: "And of course, at no point in the video did either of them say that you need to spend 5000 Bucks on something like that to be a pro. I'm not sure where you got that from." You are being unconstructive and pretentious. Goodbye, Wayne! I'm fine with discussing things, but not if the other person plays dumb.

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  Před 2 lety +1

      Gerhard, if you had watched the video, you’d know that at the end of the video there’s a statement saying that the Trinnov is NOT a replacement for acoustic treatment, and the reason that it works so well is because we have great speakers in a great room. And you’d also know that the biggest improvement the Trinnov made was audio phase alignment, which is something that acoustic treatment CANNOT accomplish. We are often against any kind of DSP processing in the monitoring chain, but without watching the video, you wouldn’t know why the Trinnov is the exception to our usual thoughts. I’d also like to add that “sounding like marketing” isn’t accurate here as we are not sponsored and not trying to sell you anything.

    • @akagerhard
      @akagerhard Před 2 lety +7

      @@PresentDayProduction please.. don't insult my intelligence. The term "professional level pricing" is bogus, I never claimed you said it replaces acoustic treatment, I said acoustic treatment is enough to be a professional. You managed for many years, didn't you? I also didn't say that there was no merit in using hard- or software to help out your room-treatment. I also didn't say that you were getting money for it - I said it SOUNDS like marketing (because marketing uses these kind of non-sensical phrases). So why are you attacking all kinds of things I DIDN'T say, instead of facing the one thing I actually DID say?
      My estimate is: Because you know I'm right. "Professional level pricing" is a bogus term, you shouldn't have used. I'm subscribed to your channel, I value some of the information you give. But if you say something I don't agree with, I will voice my opinion. And you should own up to it - or defend the term I criticised, instead of trying to discredit me. I didn't criticise the video, I haven't seen it. I criticised the part of the video I saw - so why defend the whole video? I never criticised it.
      You should be interested in what kind of behaviour stops people from watching the whole video. We both know watchtime is important for the algorythm. If I was you I'd say: "Hey Gerhard, thanks for the input! I'll try to sound less like marketing, because it is NOT marketing and I don't want it to come off as such."
      So there's 3 ways this goes.. either you are able to stomach criticism, that you know has it's place (everybody makes mistakes) - and we can all happily move on to the next video, or you decide that your ego is more important than my freedom of speech, in which case you can delete my comment and I will unsubscribe. And lastly: You ignore this comment and I will not unsubscribe, but I'll keep in mind how this went. Your move!

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  Před 2 lety +3

      If you tell me you haven’t watched the entire video then I have to assume you weren’t interested in learning anything about the topic. I don’t believe it’s a bogus term. I think anyone who works in a professional environment would pay that amount to sort their room out in under five minutes because they could easily earn that money back faster than ever by using the Trinnov. I think this will be the occasion where we agree to disagree!
      I DO understand why you would think that “professional level pricing” makes it sound like “it’s only good because you pay a lot for it”, but that wasn’t the angle we were going for - and as I said, later in the video this was actually explained in more detail.
      Thank you for your comment, regardless, it’s interesting to see what people think of our videos, of course.

If the Trinnov system corrects a space that well, how come they can only fit about 35 of the 45 employees into the room for the group photo..? Does the Trinnov work well with Behringer Budget Earbuds, as that’d be the only monitoring I could afford if I bought one...? And, finally, where can I buy one of those one-way door windows, which you can’t see from the outside..?

    Another really fine video. The "pro" in the name says something else, imo. It's for people like Mark, not the average bedroom produce, or small studio owner.
    May I suggest, that you also have a look at IK Multimedia's ARC? Maybe ARC gets overlooked so often, because it's crap, but it also maybe it's a lesser known gem? Compared to other not "pro" room acoustic measurement software.
