  • In this video Dan Miller first demonstrates basic bluegrass guitar rhythm and then shows what Jimmy Martin called his "rumble rhythm." Jimmy Martin demonstrated this rhythm in an audio interview with Dan Miller that was posted as the Bluegrass Unlimited podcast (Number 83). In this video Dan demonstrates the technique and provides guitar tablature on the Bluegrass Unlimited website Lessons Page.

Was fortunate enough to have "3 Fingers Lunch" with Jimmy Martin at a couple of Bluegrass Festivals. Good times.

Finally I know what I'm playing since September 2022 when I fell from one day to another into the Bluegrass. I was never sure of this what I'm playing, but it worked - and now I'm sure. And I was completely surprised that I was able to play the rythm guitar for "Way Downtown" on a Jam Session in Cologne, together with a guy from New York without practicing before. But that's the way - once you got it you can play Bluegrass as well.
Thanks a lot for the lesson and
    Greetings from Germany! 😊
And up to yesterday I never heard about Jimmy Martin...shame on me

Dan, I had the privilege of attending one of your workshops with you and Tim May in Heath OH several years ago. I believe that your entire Flatpicking Essentials series is a goldmine of thoughtful, clear and detailed teaching. I continue to reference the series and always find myself progressing in my musical journey through your work.
    I wish you continued success!!!

Dan, very helpful for me to take rhythm playing up a level. I definitely love the content of the videos and your magazine.

Hitting those high notes also will slow you down on a fast song (> 135-140 bpm)

Interesting clip. I saw a clip of Dan Tyminski describing his style and influences and he mentioned Jimmy Martin. I'm an intermediate player and I've been working on my RH technique specifically strumming and incorporating some crosspicking. If anyone has any recommendations on other helpful youtube clips let me know! This one is good!

Dan is one of the best ! I have his Faltpicking course. This video is a great short overveiw of the subject
I would recommend you look at George Shufller's work at Homespun tapes. with James Shelton. His ground breaking work is broken down and will give a broad repetoire of cross picking that you can add into any song. Tony Rice always had some cross picking using the straight down picking method mostly as opposed to George who uses an up down stroke more.
The Brad Davis tape is excellent I have that too, . it really is a course to develope drvie and good rythm
I have Orrin Starr's book but don't know about his Jimmy Martin work
      Good Luck !
