  • What a beautiful evening for a walk of downtown Yellowknife! August 11th, +18C, blue skies and no wind, perfect conditions for a relaxing evening walk.
Join me as I do another walking tour down memory lane of Yellowknife. This evening I start the video halfway thru my daily walk, realizing "Hey you guys can keep me company on the rest of my walk!"
So I start our by the Explorer Hotel, head down 49th street to Franklin Avenue, took a right and headed towards Ruth Inch Memorial pool walking along Franklin Avenue.
Along the way I talk about the places, the people and I share my personal memories and stories of old Yellowknife and point out the changes that we see today. I hope you enjoy these trips with me down memory lane.
Doing these videos for you really brings back a lot of wonderful memories for me. For those of you viewing who have not been to Yellowknife yet, thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy how I present Yellowknife.
Please free to subscribe to my page and share with others who you think might enjoy these videos as well, and of course I would love to hear your comments. Thanks for watching!
See you on the next video. Stay safe, travel safe, be kind to others.
    Joe :)

As you so rightly said "Once a Yellowknifer - Always a Yellowknifer!!" So True!
Lived in YK from 1987 to 1993. My wife and I were mesmerized going along with you for the walk. Thanks Joe!
31 years later YK still feels like home. Our youngest was born at the "Old" Stanton Hospital that you passed by.
Thanks to Noel (below) for forwarding this to me.

Hi Joe I was there 1976 to 1993 and loved hearing memories of so many familiar places and names. I spent every summer at Tommy Forrest doing announcing keeping score, even playing and umpiring badly. Also all the time at the original tennis courts near City Hall. Am now going to watch all your other tour videos..loved this...Thanks

Was raised in Yellowknife from 1958 and we left in 1971. So many names that you mentioned are so familiar. No TV until 1968 for 4 hours a night. I also was a Gerry Murphy rink rat for years when Prince was caretaker. Delivered the Edmonton Journal and Ted Horton's News of the North. One guy that I always remembered was old Tom Dornbos standing for hours in the old post office. First real job that I ever had was Frame and Perkins pumping gas. Could go on forever but Yellowknife in those days was a perfect place for fun and adventure. Rafting on Long Lake. Thank you for the video

    Hi Joe
The hoist room was beside Sutherland drugs. Where north west tower is was a house with a concrete retaining wall as a fence. We would sit there all the time and soak in the Yellowknife atmosphere. You’re right about always being a Yellowknifer . I’ve never really left .my home town. Thanks for doing these videos.

My wife and I lived in YK from 1977 to 78. Population 10K. We were in our mid 20s and were married on Bush Pilots Monument. She worked in a government building and I worked for Whissell Enterprizes, operated by Ken Kimble, out side of town where I learned how to run heavy equipment. I heard that ole Kenny ended up in the slammer for some nefarious deeds he pulled. It was tricky getting used to the summer and winter, where the sun would just dip below the horizon in summer and would just peek over the horizon in winter. We left in the autumn of 1978 and moved south to Grande Prairie, Alta., as being from southern Ontario, we couldn't do another winter of the killer cold of frequent -30 to -40 temps. We were stunned by the Northern lites dome and the rough and tough ravens and sled dogs. I recall visiting the Wild Cat Cafe and the Gold Range bar now and then. I was horrified by the treatment of the Aboriginal people in Rainbow village. This was my first knowledge of the First Nations, way up north, of which led me to discover the horrendous treatment of all the First Nations people on this continent which was never taught to us in schools in the south and have truly educated myself of this nitemare ever since. YK was a truly eye-opening experience I will never forget. This video sure portrays a different place since we were there 40+ years ago...

Amazing for a city of around 20 grand to have that many tall structures , you look at Whitehorse (or any city) with about the same population and it's nothing like that.

I lived behind a store called winks, in a court , it wasnt sisson court. It was a huge brown building. The winks as down the hill and across was a swimming pool. I was 9 , im 34 now. I used to bike to the beach. I dont remember it too much. We used to ride around a lake or river on a huge trail that goes all the way around in a circle. We used to cross the pool area to the hospital area across the frozen lake.

Wow thanks for sharing my old building. We used to slide off the edge behind the building and below was some kind of road like a highway. If we didnt stop ourselves we could fall into traffic. The pool is across from the building i lived. You are taking the trail towards the hospital. We used to take it to mcdonalds.

Than I you for the stroll. Yellowknife has changed a lot since 1989, when I lived there. I am guessing the Red Apple restaurant is no longer there. It was a popular restaurant in the late 80s. Seems almost like a different place. There weren’t any franchises back then.

It's called the "midnight sun" which you will see in arctic and sub-arctic regions in the summer. The downside is continuous darkness in the winter, however.
