- This week’s episode starts with us collecting our second hand furniture haul and showing you what we bought!
With an exciting antique kitchen tool that Clare gives a demo on…
But first it is time to get the corridor kitted out for the great Kitchen unpacking and de boxing with the shelves going in before the organisation begins.
Nick is back in the Maison de Maitre and the work begins on the shower tray bases but before long there is a slight erm - boo boo! Before work is full steam ahead again.
With it nearing the end of January our village Christmas lights are still up! we quickly show you a couple of our favourites! Before it is back to work! And things progress.

Love it when you do mixed double content. Claire is busy, Nick is busy, they meet, they fuss and we go on little adventures. Great fun!
Nick you are amazing. It looks like you get in the zone and just get it done. "quite pleased with that". Claire your work at putting things away also awesome. Prepping the hallway, shelves and unpacking to put everything in its place looks wonderful.
Thanks 👍 A tidy house is a tidy mind (apparently) all the best from France - Clare & Nick
Such a joy to watch you both! Clare, I share your love of the dough box! The bread looked perfect! Your hallway shelving and organization was a thrill to watch (mostly because you were so ecstatic); Nick the framing for the two bathrooms went up so fast! Yes, you both got plenty done this week. Love the marble top pieces you got at the brocante as well.
Thank you so much! we do like those marble topped units too - good value and in fairly good condition. All the best from France - Clare & Nick x
U both got a lot done. Between the 2 showers and going through the kitchen boxes, it's looking great. Can't wait until the next video. Have an awesome week, both of u. ❤
Another good video thank you
Yes vinegar came to mind with wine of the week. Good job on your shelvs and the bread looked yummy.
I love it when you go shopping at trocs and brocantes. Great video, loved the music...
😊 thank you
Excellent purchase and I love you two for your bubbly personalities.
You both are doing a great job , Pay the negative nellies no attention, Keep up the great work.
Thank you! Will do! (it is dam hard some times...)
I knew what that was as soon as I saw it , we call it a dough box . (Canada)
You all are such a giggle. Love your channel.
😊 thank you
Hi Clare Nick loved today’s post. You just keep on being the best you we love your videos also give us whatever length you want. Loved your racking girl 🦘🦘
Thank you so much! xx
Clare, from one cook & baker to another: my heart is singing with joy that you have access to all your things, and it's tidy!! Yay!
While Nick did fully explained the plan for the 2 bathrooms out of one room, it's hard for me to visualize. But with Nick's progress this week, I'm finally getting it!
You guys are such a hoot! I just love to watch your antics and progress! Cheers!
Glad you enjoy it! - all the best from France - Clare & Nick x
Putting furniture together is sometimes a real test of the strength of a relationship. 😂
We try and avoid Ikea...
@@theexpatbutchers 🤣🤣 Good idea
Another brilliant video. Love all your kitchen things and the shelving. Good job on the bathroom Nick.
Glad you enjoyed it, big thank you
Well done you two👏, love the bread table, very cool.💖🥂
Yay! Thank you!
I've restored a good number of dough boards, rolling pins, cabinets, & such for kitchen use. I generally start as you did with a good cleaning, then follow with a light spray of vinegar, let it set about 5 minutes, and remove the vinegar with a clean wet cloth. If you plan to use...and please note, some folks will object to doing any restoration to your box other than structural concerns.....Because I don't want to cook on a surface with someone else's dirt or dirt from where it was stored for a hundred years....After letting it dry completely, for the areas that will touch food, I start sanding with 150; then, go on to 180; 220; & finish with 320. On the non-food areas, if restoring is needed, I sand as I would any other wood piece, leaving as much of the original stain/finish as possible. Best case, you just remove enough of the old, so new will adhere. After cleaning & sanding, you can tell if you need any repairs. I don't worry about knicks & small issues: those blemishes tell the history of use. I just address structural concerns. For antiques that touch food, such as the one you have, I use natural hide glue, not a modern glue. As a finish, I apply several coats of good quality food safe wax or oil. You can tell from feel whether the piece was waxed or oiled originally. Just from the video, your piece appears to have a wax finish. Because I do use my antique kitchen pieces, I clean them after use, so periodically, I rewax or reoil. One recommensation to make your use of the dough box more handy, you or Nick or maybe your father, can make an antique style "platform" cabinet to set the dough box on--to raise the height. I'm short, but dough boxes are always too short for me. You don't have to attach it to the cabinet to keep it original. You can top the cabinet with solid "rails" to keep the dough box from moving. You can also add storage & wheels to cabinet. Enjoy & use that cabinet; it's not just a show piece... it has artistry & history as well as function.
That is a great idea for making the old bread box part of a new kitchen! It sounds like you would love it over here - I got an antique butter churn a few weeks ago for 50 euros - got home and googled it value 120 USD - it is a keeper though!
I’m glad you said double insulated. I was worried about that. I’ve nothing better to think about! Thanks for telling us.
Do love that y’all are getting cool finds for the house. Can’t wait to see what y’all do.
So love your banter between each other! It’s the only way to keep sanity, right! Great content and episode.😅😊 M.
Big thanks James. All the best from France - clare & nick x
Wow talk about whip the smile of your face 😂😂😂 chips anyone
Gotta keep em on their toes hilary!
I have always called those dough boxes. I don’t know if I had heard someone call it that or I read it on a tag when I encountered one in an antique shop. I know you are excited to see all of your kitchen equipment unpacked. Now let’s get that professional catering kitchen built! ❤️😃
Thanks Sheila - and to you x
Fab work guys…definitely better camera angles on the plumbing this week 😊
We agree! sometimes it is hard to get the angle right - especially when you are splitting a room in two.
The bread looks yummy! Yeah!
Oh yes!
Wow I want to be with you on your shopping spree in you own house!!!! I also have loads of kitchen stuff especially pots and pans being a former chef you just keep it all just in case you need to cook for 50 people or more. LOL. Nick that bathroom is really coming along I cant wait to see the finished room. Bravo!!!!
You must know the drill then Eric with being a former Chef - somethings you just have to keep!
I like you guys
👏🏻👏🏻 🔪⏲🥖🚿🛀 👏🏻👏🏻
🎄🍌🤣
Thanks for sharing, along with the chuckles & smiles. Cheers🍷
How was the bread Claire? Tasty? Brilliant find to prove the bread. Well done to both of you for a lot of hard work this week, looking forward to next week! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🍷
Not too bad at all Valerie. I thought I had recorded a video with the outcome and talking about it - but I seemed to forget to hit the record button - Doh!
Fun video, as always, Clare & Nick!! You pair were very busy this week!! Clare, the bread looked amazing & Nick, you got so much done in that room!! Bravo!! 🇺🇸
We do love a productive week Jane! all the best from France - Clare & Nick x
This video was gggrrrreat 😅thank you for sharing 🫶🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed it!
That IS a nice wee haul
i Have those shelves and what a pain i the bum they were to put up 😅and I did them on my own so swearing to myself was great 🤣Good though when put together. What is Nick like keeping can of beer ,, mmh wonder what else you will find Claire. I must say it is looking all nice and tidy . The bread looked really scrumptious 😋. Nice job Nick so far on the plumbing and insulating . Loved watching as always Claire and Nick😘
Nick had put those shelves up before - so it was handy! they were sure a pain to put up...all the best from France - Clare & nick x
@@theexpatbutchers 😊
I love that you can legitimately say "what a pigsty! " 😅
So much progress again! Good going!
I have an antique dough box. But it's a smaller one. I didn't know they came with tables and lids!
p.s. I just looked up dough boxes. Apparently, most have tables and lids! Who knew? Mine might be missing a lid (?). I doubt it ever had a table. Too small. Likely was just meant to sit on a counter/bench.
give it a test at some point Rue x
My Dad was. Baker so had much larger versions in his bakehouse
The hallway of shelving looks great! And how wonderful is it to at long last have all the kitchen items an available to use? Bathrooms are starting to look like bathrooms, so well done! Sorry about the wine of the week. Next week’s will be better no doubt. Cheers!
Thanks Gloria - every now and then we find a bottle of vinegar but the good wines make up for it. All the best from France - Clare & Nick x
Awesome haul! Especially the bread proofing box - what a great piece !!! Did you find the car keys ? Xx
Still no car keys! (I am amazed) the key ring also had... old house key, car key and one of my old pub keys on there! along with a 'Tile' with a flat battery... otherwise may have found the key a long time ago! (only two more rooms of boxes to go!)
It’s a bread raising box
Would love to see what the size of those boxes were!
I very much enjoy your videos also I did guess that it had to do with making bread! 🌟 🍌 👀
My sister was a professional cook and I'm sure she has a similar amount of kitchen gear despite not working in the job any more 😆
Once the bug bites - it is hard to stop...
My honeys! There seems enough footage here for 4/5 videos. I'm wondering if more frequent & shorter videos wouldn't increase your subscriptions. Wouldn't think it would increase your editing, but then what do I know? Just a thought.
Hi Elizabeth, We know what you mean with a lot of footage...it is hard at times we have tried doing frequent and sorter before but it added a bit of pressure and at times didn't seem to work to well...I normally stick to about 30mins bit just for a change did a bit longer this week, my try again in the future doing a couple a week. All the best from France - clare & Nick x
Great, best of luck.
When I was watching How to Renovate a Chateau last week I noticed they put a waterproof membrane between the floor and shower tray. Do you not want to do that?
Nick has gone along the route of using a waterproof ply board so this should do the same thing...fingers crossed. We know what you mean though x
How did you like the bread?
It was quite good for a semi first attempt Diana. I forgot to hit the record button when I did a final conclusion about it...maybe another attempt in the future. all the best from France - Clare & Nick x
33kg is 72 lbs😳
And he never asked for help!! I was a bit silly and forgot to put the conversion in... sorry x
How can two people need soo much kitchen ‘junk’?
If your maybe planning a commercial kitchen in the future…
Sacrilege! Stuff for the kitchen is always useful. If you’re catering then even more so. I have a small kitchen but I have a food mixer, food processor, hand whisk, a machine blender and a hand blender. That’s just for making things. I use them all.
