Hi! I liked the lack of editing in this video, i've watched a lot of interviews about this show and most of them were cut down to just a few minutes and it felt like nothing was even said, so thanks for not doing that! I also enjoyed the questions as well!
What a wonderful interviewer! asks great questions, doesn't interrupt, and has genuine interest in the answers. A lot of interviewers try so hard to be entertaining, but this kind of interview gives the greatest insight!
I had wondered if David Jenkins had ever seen Black Sails, which is another great pirate TV show with LGBT characters, but I guess not since he didn't correct Rhys that there had never been a pirate TV show before.
He must have - the opening OFMD screen (1717. The Golden Age of piracy...) is an obvious reference to the opening of Black Sails. Absolutely identical format, font & everything
@@jsantiago9485 Even by that standard Black Sails was first. Several main characters were LGBT and it was essential to the plot. I can't go into more detail without getting into spoilers. That being said I love both shows.
A lot of people are curious that Jenkins is straight, but it makes a lot more sense when you realize the majority of the show was written by LGBTQ writers/actors and Jenkins was poet enough to string the beautiful tapestry of real voices together without letting his likely own lack of lived experience get in the way.

i think there was also an interview where he (or maybe it was taika?) mentioned something something abt black sails
I think they meant there had never been a pirate show like OFMD that sets lgbtq+ characters as upfront protagonists instead of token characters
