You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain
*see yourself become the villain.
Self-control and knowledge of the outcome can make one or the other become the opposite
a hero to some, a villain to others......right or wrong is in the eyes of the beholder
a Washington Every villain is the hero of his own story...
...yeah I'd rather do the right thing and go hero...
Arthas from Warcraft is a sad tale. It's very Darth Vader reminiscent. But I'm a sucker for fallen hero stories like Macbeth.
I was hoping for Arthas and also Fandral Staghelm to be on here
Arthas had a great childhood, the only tragic part of his story was when he found frostmourne, wich in itself wasn't even that tragic. He just betrayed his own kingdom for absolute power
A great contender would of been Illidan, Gul'dan or Kael'thas
NET Alliance - Star Wars Fun As much as I love Arthas and I'd love to see him on the list because he is one of the greatest villains in the gaming history, his backstory isn't that tragic. What happened right before turning evil was, but overall, his life was actually fine and not that shitty...
Agreed Arthas should have been number 1. His backstory was possibly one of the most tragic of all. Quite apart from everything we see in WC3, (The destruction of his kingdom, betrayal by Uther and Jaina, having to kill his friend and mentor Muradin just to have a shot at saving his homeland) There is the expanded backstory we learn about in the AMAZING (and cannon) novel by Christie Golden (Arthas: Rise of The Lich King) and we also later find out in the "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion that Arthas' humanity is all that has kept the scourge from overrunning and destroying azeroth, and that the last act of his good side was to simultaneously attack both the horde and the alliance, causing our own invasion of Northrend which brought about his downfall. In the end, Arthas saved and protected us all, even from himself.
The Boss aka The Joy had the most tragic story I’ve ever come across. What a hero she was!! 😢. When they said history will never know what she done it tore my heart out of my chest. 💔
Her story is similar to itachi uchiha
Handsome Jack.
In the Pre Sequel we learn that he was betrayed several times, tried to be murdered several times
Floweys story is sad and doesn't get an honorable mention.
He was asriel dremmur and then a human named chara fell down and chara and asriel became best friend and siblings until chara died of sickness and the whole underground kingdom fell in grief and asriel wanted to take chara to the yellow flowers and he did but died and became flowey.
Yeah, I could have sworn that Flowey would have been in here
Asgore too, the man lost everything except his position as king.
@@Moonhunter97 asgore wasn't really the villain though, flowey was
Turbobist 28 I know
I still don't understand why chara was evil
Artorias was way more sympathetic than Sif. He was one of the most fabled knights of Gwyn and was known as a hero. He ended up coming face to face with the abyss and even sacrificed himself to save Sif. When you fight him, he is a hollow shell of his former self and it is your job to put the corrupted hero out of his misery.
LaserShark19 agreed
:(
LaserShark19 I always thought the Burnt Ivory King was more tragic. The king of Eleum Loyce who fought back against the Chaos who valiantly sacrifices himself in order to quell the Chaos flame but went mad from doing it. You are then tasked to go into the bed of Chaos in order to put him to rest. But I guess Artorias and the Ivory King have similar and tragic backstories.
I'm going to assume, since I never played any _Souls_ game, that Sif was chosen because she *limps* when low on health, not to mention the fact that she's a PET WOLF.
Chaos89P Sif technically isn't a villain because he only wants to kill you to protect his master's ring, which he was instructed to do.
Sif was the saddest for me out of all the games i've played. luv that dog so much ;'[
If you're gonna add someone from Final fantasy, add Caius Ballad, the man who destroyed time in order to save one girl
Count Bleck from SUper Paper Mario. he's the only Mario villain who isn't consumed by greed and power. he was devastated and angry with the universe for taking the love of his life away from him. So he seekd to erase the entire universe. not only because he lost his lover. he also viewed everything as utterly meaningless.
Jeremy Knight
It’s even worse when you discover that his “evil plot” boils down to, basically, a suicide bombing.
I kinda think Sephiroth's backstory is more tragic than Seymour Guado's.🤔
0:02 I haven't heard this song since back when Watchmojo was barely beginning on CZcams
How about Lucien Fairfax from Fable II? He has a crazy family, and when he was young he saw his sister die which left him feeling helpless. To add to that his wife and daughter passed away from a mysterious illness (probably Theresa's fault). In the beginning, his intentions were good, trying to bring his wife and daughter back and all, but he went crazy because of the Spire (probably also Theresa's fault).
Everyone of these backstories were very imaginative and detailed
I actually want to hug these villains rather than fight them
Everyone deserves a happy ever after and some affection
Snatcher from A Hat In Time has a super tragic backstory. He was a kind prince who had a fiance named Vanessa. However, Vanessa was unhealthily obsessed with him, and banned anything that he loved because it could distract him from her. When the prince went to buy flowers for her, she saw him holding the hand of another woman, the florist, when in reality the prince was simply paying for the bouquet. When the prince arrived home, Vanessa locked him in the basement of her manor and left him to die of starvation and hypothermia. She then went on a rampage, magically freezing to death every citizen of Subcon, her kingdom. This trauma led everyone else to become a ghost, including the prince, who took the name of Snatcher and started his business of contracually taking souls, and being incredibly sardonic while he does it.
Raul Menendez is such an underrated villain.
My personal favorite pick is Flowey from Undertale. His backstory absolutely devastated me for years after playing Undertale. It was very well done.
"In death, sacrifice." RIP, Duncan. Never forget.
Did they forget about Captain Price?! I mean fr, he started out with a full squad, witnesses Gaz and his other men die. Then he was too late to save Roach and Ghost, and watched Soap, the only remaining member of his original squad, die in front of him. Furthermore, Yuri died saving him from Makarov. The man lost almost all of his brothers in arms. They were his family.
I know I’m late for this but the title clearly says villains not characters.
I found Sephiroth to be a bit more tragic than Seymour Guado and Caius A LOT more!
I’m surprised Berkut (From Fire Emblem Shadows Of Valentina) didn’t appeared here. Berkut is one of the best villains, he had done horrible stuff, but he is a tragic villain, too. He’d done things that affected others, but he thought that they would benefit Rinea, the woman he loved. Anyways... It’s a large history....
A villain I would add to this list is baulder from God of war 2018. (spoiler alert) In the game, we realize baulders ability to feel anything is taken away from him by his mother Freya. Sure he won't be able to feel pain, but he can't taste anything, feel any breezez, anything like that. Nothing! And to make it all worse, Freya even said she had every right to curse him just because she's his mother. It absolutely traumatizes him to the brink of maddness. You think Freya would have regretted doing that, even after her son vowed to never want to see her again, but I beg to differ seeing as how she destroys the mistletoe arrows from Kratos's son without telling them what they do. Baulder came to hate his mother's guts, and he had every right too. Thankfully in the end, he finally got what he wanted, death.
hahahahahaha GO HOME AMATOR GO HOME
"MO...THERRRRRRRRRR! RAHR!" *falls off cliff*
"....Oh God. _I can't die!_ "
lmao Watchmojo seems to have forgotten that Lisa didn't die from the fall, and she still went after Wesker during the final moments of the Mansions explosion
I can't escape you
What’s the name of the background music? It’s so chillingly cool!
I miss F.E.A.R. so much. The first game is still one of the best things i have ever played
Lisa's reunion with her mom broke my heart
How you know even in a first playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins that Loghain is not to be trusted: He's voiced by Simon Templeman. NEVER trust Kain...
I think Egil from Xenoblade Chronicles has a pretty tragic backstory, and so do the Faced Mechon. For Egil, he lost his friend to an omnicidal sword and lost so many of his people to monsters forged from the sword's power. Not only that, but the one saving grace that could pose a threat to the sword never came, leaving him and the rest of his people for dead. For the Faced Mechon, they're people who got turned into robots!!! And that's all just their backstories!
Egil😢
Handsome Jack? Also: Sif wasn't a villain.
I thought Handsome Jack woulda been in this as well. He started off good and wanted to do the right thing.
He did actually think he was in the right, but was wrong, and rather inhuman when it came to his daughter. Sounds like he would count. Either way, still one of my all time favotite video game villains.
Handsome Jack HAHAHAHAHAH NO
Ruben and Laura Victoriano from The Evil Within, Alessa Gillespie and Walter Sullivan from Silent Hill deserves spots this list
Last time I was this early WatchMojo was actually entertaining
SEEEEYYYYMOOOOORE!!!
“Cloud! I was just um, stretching my calves on the windowsill! Isometric exercise, join me!”
I think that the people from the spanish town in Resident Evil 4 is incredibly sad, when I saw it during the credits after you beat the game, it really aflict me...
I can't believe Watchmojo would make this video without at least giving the Mishima Bloodline an honorable mention.
Are honorable mentions no longer being included? And Grahf from Xenogears would totally make this list.
Dagran for The Last Story, definitely. Wasn't a twist that they tried to hide, but it was sold really well
Now we can add Ballas from Warframe. Ballas was an executioner for the Orokin; a collective of humans who believed in utter perfection. But when the love of his life stood by her ideas of saving a group of survivors as opposed to the faith of the Orokin, Ballas was forced into killing her. Since then, he conspired with the enemy of the Orokin, the Sentients, to have the Orokin and the Tenno survivors destroyed.
I thought Miitopia's Dark Curse's backstory was a tragic one. He was a simple man who felt sad and lonely. Everyone ignored him, even after he realized why. He cast away his face because he felt it was the reason why he was being ignored. This in turn turned him into a spirit of hatred, willing to turn an unsuspecting Mii into the Dark Lord and steal the faces from other Mii characters and use them to make monsters. At least he has a happy ending in the end.
The Dark Curse's backstory may not have been as tragic as some of the other villains on this list, but it's easy to sympathize for the poor lad.
Kerrigan/ the Queen of Blades is definitley one of my favorite villains ever! And no honorable mentions? If this list included species instead of individuals I'd have to nominate the Grunts from the Halo series.
No mention for the Warriors of Hope (maybe except for Monaca)?
there are some villains you hated or frustrated about at first that have a backstory that makes you sympathize or cry for. lisa trevor and sarah Kerrigan are good examples
Now do "top 10 video game heroes with tragic backstories".
I agree with Raul Menendez, I mean, he watched the Contras, who were backed by the U.S.A, rape and murder his people *as a child,* and then his sister got scarred and then later died at the hands of Woods and technically Mason, I can’t help but feel sorry about him.
Bladelord of Ouroboros, Joshua's Mentor in Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
Wait for next WoW expansion and Sargeras: The Mad Titan would probably end up being the real hero ....
that background music :3
What was that theme in the background while he was talking
Why was Sephiroth and his mother not mentioned? When through the tale of Sephiroth trying to find his mother, he becomes the true villain after Cloud plunging a sword through Jenova, creating the evil he is today? Ringing any bells?
Villains normally have troubled pasts
Jecht would have been a much better Final Fantasy X pick. While Seymour wanted to become Sin so he could bring death, Jecht DID become Sin through an act of selfless sacrifice that he had been promised could potentially break the cycle of death. That, IMO, is infinitely more tragic.
Sarah Kerrigan (StarCraft series) deserves to be in the Top 3. Also, I expected to see Mileena from Mortal Kombat
The Boss is not a villain! She is a true patriot!!
Phillip Miller Hell yeah
antagonist would probably been a better word.
Sif wasn't a villain either
And one can argue Kerrigan wasn't--if we accept her infested form as a zerg, it's literally just survival of the fittest and war of species, neither side is "evil"
And then there is Alma wade and Lisa Trevor. Those I'd classify more as monsters than villains. To me, Villian must willingly do things that they themselves knows to be wrong(i.e. choosing evil), even if it is with the intention of "greater good" so to speak. Any being that is incapable of differentiate right from wrong or is merely driven by primal instinct etc are only monsters.
Same with Solidus
How can Magus from Chrono Trigger not make this list?
the next video you inevitably make about games that were cancelled, and if it hasn't been mentioned already, there was almost a third person Splinter Cell type game called "Starcraft - Ghost"
Sometimes it makes you think if they're actual villains or just complicated characters
You should make a top Ten Ken Follett novels
The next one of these should go out to Sae from Fatal Frame II. I know there are a lot more tragic villains, but having your twin sister chicken out and leave you behind is pretty horrible. Especially when you're left to perform the ritual incorrectly, which destroyed their entire village.
If this had an honorable mentions I’d put Goro Akechi from Persona 5 on here
I can think of no fewer than four from the Layton series: Anton, Clive, Descole and Bronev. Familial conflict leading to being left by his one true love, have parents killed in a lab explosion at the age of 12 only to have the one responsible for said explosion become Prime Minister, having parents kidnapped when he was young by a military organisation for his father's interest in a civilisation and then having his wife and daughter being killed by the same organisation, and being the one kidnapped by that very organisation and losing his wife to a disease leading to his promising her to find the secrets of the ancient civilisation by literally any means necessary.
Honorable mention: Genbu from Tenchu 2. He is loyal to the villain Lady Kagami because she's the only one to not treat him as the big oaf he was. After the player kills him, he dies on his feet with a smile on his face and no regrets.
Widowmaker from overwatch is somewhat sad being brainwashed and killed her lover is just dark
I want more of these
What theme did they use? Please tell me!
5:01 Is that Melina Kanakaredes from CSI:N.Y.?She looks like so!
Make saddest video game hero back stories. In my opinion, Arthur Morgan is in the top three with the lines, "I had a son...he passed away. I had a girl with loved me, I threw that away. My mama died when I was a kid, and my daddy, well I watched him die. It weren't soon enough."
i felt sorry for lisa upon reading her backstory she was just an innocent child who was experimented on.
where the fuck is handsome jack
When I heard #10 I thought he said "logang" lmao
Did Kerrigan and Raynor really got reunited at the end of Starcraft ii: Legacy of the Void, or was Raynor just seeing things?
Was Lisa Trevor really a villain? Did she kill anyone important/innocent? I never played the games, but when I read about her, she sounds more like a mentally damaged victim than an actual bad guy like Wesker
Kellogs of Fallout 4 the first name that pop up in my mind when I saw this.
Lusamine, Sun and Moon version. Gotta really feel for her.
Ganondorf and Handsome Jack both deserved spots on this list
I like it im playing ffx now its such a good game
The grey wolf made me have feels
It's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you.
But Sif isn't a villain..he's just guarding his master's grave
There's some stuff you left out about Kerrigan, The Reason Mengsk both hates the Confederacy and Kerrigan, is because they murdered his entire family while he was away being a bad son. While he didn't care about the death of his father, his mother, and especially his younger sister broke him, and made him seek revenge. He found Kerrigan, and used her to 1 by 1 hunt down the team ordered to assassinate his family. When that was all done he lured the Zerg to Tarsonis, and left Kerrigan there to die.
Top 10 top 10 watch MOJO videos
Asif Javed thats a great idea
Ikr.
or Top 1000 Hated Watchmojo Videos
That'll work really well
Top 10 "Top 10 Top 10 Watch Mojo Videos"
Sif wasn't a villain, he was a guardian
number 3 and number 4 still make me BibleThump to this day.
I totally would put Luca Blight (Suikoden 2) on the list!
Dunno why I was expecting Saren from Mass Effect on that list.
When i was this early, The Fast and Furious franchise was still about racing...
I knew Medusa had a tragic backstory.
I thought Josh from Until dawn was going to be here!
6SeaJay6 Seas I thought that PORKY MINCH would be here (from earthbound/mother 3)
I'm really happy that the Great Grey Wolf Sif is on the list, but where is Arthas? I suppose one Blizzard character is good enough.
Ruvik from the Evil Within
Andre Montoya yes all he wanted was to bring back is sister and the hacked him to pieces
Dr. Furter then don't play it
He was a psychopath who enjoyed experimenting on people. He got what he deserved.
Last time i was this early people were still hyped for suicide squad
should be zul'jin from warcraft series
lost his coem, tryed to take it back, got captured, elves took his eye, had to cut his own arm to get free, his former allies betrayed him and got killed by treasure hunters
'Deep beneath all manner of vile villainy and depraved acts, is simple pain.'
No Count Dracula? No villain from the Ace Attorney series?
Lisa doesn't even die there. In umbrella chronicles she goes after Wesker and is then pinned under a chandelier until the mansion explodes.
You didn't even explain Sif's backstory. Sif isn't a villian, he was just protecting his master's resting place. He was a loyal dog companion till the end.
Walter Sullivan from silent hill 4 the room should’ve most definitely been on here💯
What about the tragic backstories for Dr. Weil (Mega Man Zero series), Sigma (Mega Man X series), Luca Blight (Suikoden II) and Albert Weaker (Resident Evil series)?
What about Superman from the Injustice series?
Joshua Linders Not a total villain. Anti-hero
Wow. I'm surprised something dealing with Portal isn't number 1 on WatchMojo's top 10.
Dude The Boss and sarah Is tragic for me :(
Did u guys play Infamous : Second Son??
Kerrigan was only a villain when she did not have control of her free will. If she made it on the list, Illidan could have. But in truth he is a hero who is trying to prove that to his family.
