This song is absolutely legendary
Coldest beat ever made imo
Sample list
"Today" by Tom Scott
"Deliver Me" by Tom Scott
"When She Made Me Promise" by The Beginning of the End (intro)
"I'm Black and I'm Proud" by James Brown
WHATS THE DELIVER ME BY TOM SCOTT PART?? I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY SAMPLED NY 2 SONGS, JAMES BROWN, TOM SCOTT AND THE BEGINNING OF THE END?
Pete Rock produced like a jazz musician. He reminded me of a Quincy Jones type of thinker when he made music.
I spent at least 10-15 minutes telling my barber about this tutorial (and shared link). Thanks for deconstructing this timeless classic.
Hey boss... I just came across your stuff today and thoroughly enjoy it. I am a 35 year old math teacher by day and a dj on the side. I grew up with hip hop and am fascinated by its development. Your videos are educational and sooooo enjoyable.
I love that "oh man that song was sampled in..." feeling too
One of the best songs ever made.
Yet another classic by Pete Rock. You really did this joint justice. I remember hearing the instrumental on NBA Street Vol. 2, and then when I heard the lyrics and understood the meaning behind it, it was mind-blowing. RIP Trouble T-Roy (and Heavy D).
I remember when hip hop told meaningful stories like this.
Yo! This is awesome! This guy is good. This just shows you the kind of geniuses these hip hop producers are! They were doing this without all of today's technology. Pete Rock is in my Top 5 all time for producers!
bro.....hands down...this is the BEST one you've done period....
Great work deconstructing and reconstructing. Learned some cool new stuff because of you
This goes to show that sampling isn't as easy as people think it is.
People that criticize it should try to do what these producers do. They'll get a much better appreciation for the artform and understand that it isn't just playing a section on a loop.
"the best-produced hip hop track of all-time" - This might actually be true.. It's a work of deeply inspired genius. If Pete Rock had ONLY PRODUCED THIS ONE TRACK (and not the dozens of other classic tracks he produced over the years), he would still be mentioned today as one of the Golden Age's finer producers. But, of course, he DID produce a bunch of other incredible tracks, and is arguably the most talented producer the artform/culture has produced thus far.
Great Recreation! Whoever left a thumb down really a pure HATER. Wish they could be this creative!
Man, when I heard "Today" from Tom Scott in an episode from "The Boondocks", I just said "OH SHIT!!!!" Beautiful sample, very beautiful.
Definitely enjoy the break down. Miss talking to you brother. Stay forever Blessed
You got it about 99% , your version sounds like I would imagine it would sound of played but a love band. You did a great job
great topic. salute to you for doing this.
I was looking so hard for this to be demonstrated I wanted the roots from this song! Thank you so much!
The opening intro could have been a song all its own
I pray your still alive and doing what you do because you so it the best.
That's a dope joint right here.... Mane... Back in 90's was the lick and still is in my book.... And u the man, you r bad ass mixing all this up.... Love that joint...
Great job dude !!!! This was an amazing episode, thank you. Much respect.
Love your Channel, Greetings from Germany
No layering... I just sampled the James Brown drums and played the sequence. Pete Rock replied on Twitter and said he didn't do them the way that I did the drums... I'm guessing that he allowed the drum sample to play a little bit and mixed that with some sequencing of his own.
well played! put in the work and you're rewarded!
i'm not even a dj, but loved the skills on display here!
Arrrr....the sample for Black Sheep's Similak Child in here too!
Mike Wykes it’s actually from ‘today’ by Jefferson airplane
I like your show very much, you don't just recreate beats, i also like the stories you tell around them. Born 1989 in Germany i grew up with American Hip Hop and when i was older i read alot about it, watched documentations and interviews, but i still can learn something from your background information. THX for that. BTW: can you get your hands on some Guru stuff? Now that he is a legend.
2020. reminisce over that dope channel
Yes! It's finally here. i love your vids bro. Can't wait to hear some new joints.
You are super talented. Your deconstruction is awesome. One consideration: 22 years ago it was probably easier to listen to the music you wanted to sample and then play it yourself. As a by product, you get some changes in pitch etc. But my guess is that some of the music wasn't sampled and then altered slightly but instead, it was actually re-created. Thanks for your all your great productions.
Wow! Great Job man!
thx for the love, fam. New joints every week ;)
Well done. I applaud your efforts with the video and deconstruct. peace to 914
excellent choice, I look forward to it
Depends on the track. I do cheat and time stretch but they didn't have that ability back in the day. If I do stretch, it's usually with the intention to differentiate my cover from the original enough to throw off CZcams's content monitoring algorithms that really love flagging content for copyright stuff (it flagged my first video because the cover apparently sounds close enough to the original track to get CZcams's attention).
just to point out, drum machines back in the 80s etc had that same button you could press to trigger rolls and fills etc. producers used them a lot in early production especially for hihats. loving this series though. new subscriber.
WOW...GREAT breakdown!
Amazing. This has been my favorite song ever since I was a preteen hehe
Big L is on my radar. I've still got a bunch of other tracks to cover before I get to him though. I'm thinking that I might do "Put it On" one day though
This is so awesome, dude. Great work.
Wow. Best reworking I've heard from you yet!!
Amazing. Seriously man you did a great job!
wow the old maschine
imgay
I will definitely be doing some GangStarr. I just did a Preemo joint not too long ago so I want to wait a little bit before I do another. Thx for the love, fam
I want to say that I used a tap delay (I'm not near my Maschine right now).
Almost...not quite there, but awesome job.
I love your videos, you deserve a lot more subs!
Good re-creation if I say so myself!!
U NAILED IT, SOUNDS GOOD, THAT SONG T.R.O.Y. STRAIGHT CLASSIC. ITS WHATS MISSING TODAY. IM JUST SAYING
awesome job
Im 2 years late, but Pete Rock did sing the oohs in the verse
Dude...you are nice with it.
excellent bro
nicely done. the intro is from a bahamian band, Beginning of the end. a little more reverb on the snare
lot's of lovin' (remix) pete rock & cl smooth (rare but fire)
A job well done dude.
Just found your channel last night - amazing, what I've been looking for on youtube for ages! I like the way you explain everyone so clearly with reference to the track's history, really inspiring. Have you any plans to break down/remake any of Big L's beats?
And yes, TROY has got to be up there in the best-produced tracks of all time.
Real nice 👍
Impressive once again man.
Great bro
U did that homie...Dope!
Nice man you did a good job👍👍
THERE'S AN INTERVIEW WITH PETE, 9TH, AND PREMO, AND JUST, AND i BELIEVE PART OF THE BACKGROUND VOCALS IS PETE HIMSELF, AS STATED BY THE SOUL BROTHER HIMSELF.
incredible
THIS IS SOOOO EPIC.
What's good Dude? Your videos are Super Fresh! Just found your channel yesterday. KoolOne from the West Coast says Peace. How about a Cypress Hill Muggs beat?
Sorry, I'm coming to this late. Just found you. Just a note - On the drums, Pete sampled the snare all the way through the hi-hat and truncated it just before the next kick. Try that, and take out (or mix down) that isolated hat. Good job though.
Nick Woods what do you mean
Excellent work , thank you, who is the original author of the sample? I heard this song way back in the 70's, but can't find the title or the band that played it
If you search for Tom Scott on youtube now you get a British guy (who admittedly makes pretty good content), but “tom scott music” brings up the channel of the guy who made the main/horn sample
the drums are the legendary funky drummer as usual lol
Good but you forgot trouble funk the pump me up me up me up echo and the bass line under cut
this was great aswell !!
very good remake!
Dope!!! You did a good job with this a lot better than that dude Lupe used. I think Pete Rock would be proud so I tweeted this to him.
I gotta wonder, how PR wet about putting each piece of the sample together kind of like a puzzle, this is why i get mad when people say sampling isn't real music. I'm a producer myself and i've had my fair share of dope flips but i still don't think i match up to the people I respect.
damn did you sell your soul to the devil because that is pretty effin close to the original. great work man
Subbed, awesome, that was great...
Not a bad remake! The drums should be dirtier (don't remember if this version of Maschine had the SP1200 filter?) and it needs a good amount of compression to give the snare more impact and expansion. A good transient designer would be a good alternative. Pete likely stacked drums to make them fatter. I'm also certain that some level of delay echo was used on the drums, the snare drum in particularly that helps to fill dead space and give ambiance. I probably would experiment with slightly shifting the hi hat backward or the snare forward to give the snare a more pushed forward sound.
slapopimp I have been trying to figure out how he got those drums like that.Do you think Pete Rock stacked those drums.I have tried so many things. Its so simple but it is absolutely ridiculous.
good job
You need way more likes and subscribers!
Amazing show man, I've been looking for a show like this forever! Two questions:
1° Could you cover a Kanye beat? It'd be interesting to see how complex or not his stuff is
2° Could you do an extremely detailed (like a tutorial) cover, for us newbies to get better with Reason and other softwares?
Thx man keep up the excellent work
DOPE
dope
I TRIED TO DO THIS MY SELF, AD I JUST CAN FIND THE RIGHT TUNING, PITCH. I SWEAR NO ELECTRONIC OR PLUGIN CAN MIMIC THE DETUNING/TUNING/PITCH OF A TURNTABLE OR ACTUAL MPC OR ANY OTHER ANALOG PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. .I HAVE PITCH N TIME PRO, AND THE MPC 2000XL BUT I STILL CANT GET THE RIGHT PITCH WELL EXACT PITCH. I MUST BE DOING SOMETHING WRONG
On a side note how about doing 2 Pac I Get Around.
WhoSampled says the drums weren't sampled... idk why.
Nofuture91 The thing is, I tried submitting it to Whosampled and it said that my submission was declined because it had been previously rejected, as though they refuse to believe that this was a sample or something.
That Tom Scott though!
I will def get around to it (no pun intended)
I'm pretty sure it was done " with no more than a E-mu sp1200" what about a a s900? good video none the less. The majority of talented producers from yesterday to today have pretty much agreed that Pete Rock flipped this record beyond their imagination.
Great video! It’s also hugely educational in illustrating how terrible modern technology sounds compared to 40 years ago, when the SP1200 was king. Progress is a myth!
think his studio also included an akai s950 and rhodes during this time
thx for the s/o
nice
I'm not an expert but I think adding a low pass filter to extract the bassline isn't a good technique. To extract it correctly you have to filter it too low and you'll realize it if you listen to the remake you've done. I believe Pete Rock used EQ (if it has been accessible at this time) or some more sophisticated technique... Anyway keep up the good work it is very interesting!
Aye bro I make beats I’m aight but I wanna sample what software do u use and can it work for macs
why dont you make more videos?
Awesome videos. I have to ask - do you time stretch the original song to the tempo of the beat you are making or do you just straight use the original sample tempo?
How can I get this? Does anyone knows the system he's using, cause it sames more easier to use than FL
