  • This is 8 minutes of driving a 1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6 Balocco SE on a variety of roads from Duanesburg to Schenectady, via Amsterdam, New York on a cool fall day in October, 2013. The GTV6 as its name implies is powered by a 2.5liter SOHC hemi-head aluminum V6. The engine is an "over square" bore/stroke, meaning the bore is larger in diameter than the stroke is long. A short stroke means it'll rev up real nice & fast and like it - and as most enthusiasts will confirm the sound of this Alfa engine is rapturous. "Classic and Sportscar" magazine deemed the Busso V6 second in sound only to the Maserati V8.... The GTV6 is a revelation compared to my '76 Alfetta GT which was a 2.0liter 4 cylinder. Good torque, plenty of power, very solid steering feedback, easy to control at the edges of tire grip, with throttle oversteer available on demand. [Post Script: There is a reason this edit doesn't include footage and audio of her revving up quite as lustily as 'Rosa' would want. On the trip out, my HD camera went into 'hibernate' mode without me knowing it. I realized this only when I got to my 'turn-around' point. I put my guts into the drive out there and just didn't have the same energy driving back - plus, I try hard not to expose my cars to the public's wrath more than absolutely necessary. So it's usually a "single take". But the roads are still there, and there will be another day for a drive.].

    Awesome Alfa Video!! You drive like I do! I love the route you took, of great back roads and fun highway interchanges, GTV5's Love to Dance around those curves. And the Sound!!

      Thank you Glenn! It’s been a while, but it’s always fun when I find the time (and presence of mind) to capture some of the fun of driving these Alfas. Cheers!

    Thanks for sharing Arthur. I owned a Balocco for a few years in the mid 80's. #98 of 350 (which was my license plate also). Sweetest ride I've ever had. Nice stiff suspension and the engine was pure music. Loved to put it through it's paces in the winding back "mountain" roads in San Diego.
    Unfortunately, my mechanic drove it as much as I did and the mounting costs led me to sell it after a few years. But it was great to be "behind the wheel" again.

      Thanks for your comments Brian. Nice to hear you enjoyed yours while it lasted. Yeah, the engine sound is just so very irresistible. These days the costs are pretty reasonable (as far as classic cars go anyway). I'm fortunate that I'm able to troubleshoot most issues myself with online expertise from sites like www.alfabb.com. It's also a big help that my #77 was kept in very good condition all these years, so minimal problems to date. Cheers!

    number 192/350 is for sale near me, $4500. I wish I had any way to buy it, it looks like a really cool car

      Nice to know.. Its condition will dictate its value of course, but if in good shape that sounds like a very good price. Too bad you can't pick it up.. If you visit the website Bring-a-Trailer.com, there was an auction of a very perfect GTV6 that just sold for $26,500..

    I had the opportunity to purchase a mint condition Alfa Romeo GTV6 Balocco about 5 years ago and kick myself everyday for not jumping on it. I still enjoy my 91 Alfa Spider though.

    With that sort of engine
    sound, you should've had the accelerator floored all the time.

      Effkristo (thank you!) Nikos, I would love even more to bring "Rosa" to the roads of Greece and have the accelerator floored all the time! (I think maybe you are from Greece? - A beautiful country. My family visited Ioannina, Vikos Gorge, Amfilochia, Cornith, Athens and Naxos last summer). Kalimera!

    Lol no need to make excuses for the cabin noises, old sports cars should make noises, if its not something is wrong or its not a vintage sports car lol...and what's up with the 2 gear synchro on all gtv6s, seems like the old gtvs from the 60s had better gear boxes, how is that possible? Haha

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Seb, yes the 2nd gear synchros are famously weak in the rear transaxle Alfettas and GTV6.. The "story" I heard was that Alfa hadn't enough funds to design the new transaxle, so they looked at a Porsche unit and basically copied it... Except the Porsche box was a 4-speed. When Alfa made it a 5-speed, the synchros weren't good enough for the added rotational mass... It sounds possible, but I found nothing on the internet to support this story.

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction  Před 5 lety

      ... double-clutching between shifts, and changing transaxle oil to Redline NS75W-90 has mostly eliminated the synchro crunch, but it will get a rebuild in the coming years with stronger synchros from a Milano gearbox.
